About Tam Wimolvan Vidulich
Q: What led you to carpet design?
TWV: My first design job out of school was as a junior designer at an award-winning design firm. The day I walked in the door, everyone was already busy on a really big job for Crown Corporation’s new headquarters. The only job left was for a carpet for a wood-trimmed hallway.
Q: Are there elements of traditional Thai design in your work?
TWV: Of course — lines, curves, a continuous movement, a sort of simplification of the more intricate Thai designs. Since Thai people sit on the floor, carpets need to be comfortable. The carpet is also central to social life, the gathering place, the focal point of a home.
Q: What’s the most rewarding part of your work?
TWV: I guess that people trust me enough to let me put my work in their homes, living with what I envision for them. It’s wonderful when I get notes from clients telling me how much they enjoy my carpets, because I’ve left a part of me in their homes.

About Tam Wimolvan Vidulich
Tam Wimolvan Vidulich is a native of Korat in Northeastern Thailand. She studied interior architecture at the King Mongkut Institute of Technology in Bangkok. In 1986 Tam came to Chicago to pursue graduate studies in interior architecture at the Art Institute of Chicago, earning a Masters in Fine Arts degree in 1989.
Prior to carpet design, Tam’s experience in architecture included residential, office, retail and public space projects. This unique background underscores Tam’s overall philosophy of carpet design; the carpets she creates must be beautiful on their own yet function as part of the overall concept.
Tam’s diverse architectural and artistic influences — from the unique weaving styles of her home region of Thailand to the painting of Caravaggio and the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, melded with her commitment to working closely with her clients and other design professionals — results in carpets that are unique, beautiful and functional.
