History

Established in 1969.

Founded as a Corporation in Berkeley California, Mekatron was initially involved in racing and performance modification and working on exotic cars such as Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jaguar, Mercedes, Ferrari, Maserati and English sports cars.

In 1978 the Concord store opened and evolved towards specializing in Japanese Imports.

Since then Mekatron has developed, in house, its own computerized diagnosing, estimating, scheduling and control systems. By continually keeping up with the latest equipment, technology and training, Mekatron Concord has become far more state-​of-​the-​art than its average competitors. By automating the time consuming daily work of auto repair, the staff has more available time to spend with the customer. We pride ourselves on our ability to communicate, prioritize with honest advice, and remove intimidation from the experience of car repair. Ian — Code Name: ‘The Maestro.’ A very much loved dad, step-​dad and grandpa, Ian has been in the auto repair industry 47 years and has owned Mekatron for 40 years. The heartbeat of Mekatron, Ian orchestrates the day to day operations using the «Auto Solution» computer program he developed. Ian’s hobbies are skiing, biking, hiking and scuba diving. Rumor has it that he was clocked skiing 59.8 mph in Trevino, Italy at the age of 60!

I have been taking my 98 Subaru to the dealer for 15 yrs for repairs. I was satisfied with the service and prices until this year. Customer service became awful and the prices went way up. I tried Mekatron and was amazed at their attention to detail, customer service and knowledge of my car. I compared prices with several other shops before I went to Mekatron. I never told them I was comparing estimates. When they gave me the estimate I was blown away at how reasonable it was plus a free rental car. I will keep coming back as well as send my daughter’s Hyundai to them. (Hyundai dealers raised their rates quite a bit too this year) Thank you Ian and Michael we’ll be your customers forever.

Well, once again we had a great experience taking our 2002 Infinity to Ian and Michael. Something went wrong and the car had to be towed to Merkatron. The computer «fault» code did not provide the specific cause but Ian knew past issues with the car and did a brilliant maneuver to identify which of the multiple issues was the culprit. Saved us costly diagnostic hours and costly multiple repairs to «hunt» for a cure. 5 stars seems a conservative rating!

I recently took my FX-​35 there for an intermediate service. I was absolutely delighted with the service. Clean and friendly customer area, friendly staff. Well informed and very helpful.
Service was completed the same day, all the checks and suggested maintenance completed. They inspected my car and found that it needed no additional service.
They gave me a ride home, at my request, but did inform me that they did have loaners. I also learned how they handle tire replacement .
I am happy and will use them again.

These guys are a diamond in the rough.
Years of having my leg pulled about my 2004 Honda Accord are now over!
They give you a priority list of your cars needs, take time to show and explain everything with patience and kindness, and are all just lovely people.
Highly recommend!
Note: they are on the side of a blvd divided by an island, so you might not see them as you drive, but they are the first driveway once you u-​turn right in front of the store from the opposite direction.

We’ve been taking our cars to Ian for more than 20 years. Our 1985 Civic we bought new went to 125K miles and we sold it 1997 for $ 2,500. Not bad for a care we paid $ 8,000 for out the door. Our 1989 Accord, also purchased new, went 227K before I donated it to charity, not because it didn’t still run like a top, but because I needed an AWD vehicle. Why do we like Ian so well? Yesterday the check engine light came on the instrument panel of our 2007 Accord Hybrid. Called Ian. Instead of telling us to bring the car in, he explained it is likely due to the gas cap not being on tightly (three clicks). How many mechanics will tell you not to bring the car, that the fix is an easy one you can do yourself? Trust is valuable and Ian has ours.

I’ve been a customer for several years now and I am happy with the service here. They do a good job. They are friendly and honest about what needs to be done. The prices are competitive, not higher than dealer. I’ve had my timing belt done, checked engine looked at and gotten repairs taken care of, and had my glove compartment changed out due to broken keyhole. They pay for a car rental if you need to leave your car here for a couple of days. Enterprise is across the street from the shop. They are open Sats to do repairs/​work for scheduled appts. I like that they give explanations of what is wrong and what needs to be done. I take that info and decide what needs to be repaired first and what can be done at a later time. They do not pressure you into getting repairs done. They make notes for you so that you are aware of what needs to be done next time. Will be back for services for my VW Jetta.

I was referred to Mekatron by AAA, & decided to have my Honda Accord towed there, less then 1 mile from my residence in Concord.
I had been using a very good auto mechanic in the Antioch area, but I am so happy I had a chance to use Mekatron. You can read a review which talks about pricing, one that talk about service issues, & the balance are very positive in all other aspects.
My personal experience with Ian, & also with Michael, the cutomer service & work that was done to my vehicle, I have to rate as truly solid & outstanding. And even tho I was financially strapped, the total, for a new battery, cables, sensor, oil pressure guage & a bunch of other things, came in at $ 675, when I am sure the actual time & labor was closer to $ 1,000.
I will definitely return to Mekatron for more service & can’t recommend them more highly. In a time when customer service has largely been forgotten, Mekatron’s work to build lasting customer relationships I find very refreshing indeed.

I have been looking for a good auto shop in the area and these guys were great. I had issues with my headlights and Lexus quoted me $ 3500 + to get the job done. I went here and they did a great job for $ 1400. They were extremely fair as well, if for any reason the headlights were not exactly how I wanted them, they would refund everything including the labor.
Everyone was very nice and even dropped me off at work while they worked on my car.
Definitely recommend them.

Parts changers. Up-​sell pitchers. Exaggerators.
We took our Q45 to Mekatron several times during the years. Every visit ended up with a high bill which, considering the car, isn’t anything of surprise.
But the last visit about 2 years ago killed Mekatron for us. Our car had failed smog and they diagnosed the problme as an Oxygen sensor. No problem. They made the repair. It’s what they recommended needing work that raised my concern.
First, they said the head gaskets needed to be repaired. Yes, the car was leaking oil badly, admittedly, and a head gasket job was about 3 grand.
Second, they said there was a coolant leak and that either the radiator or water pump (I honestly forget which) need to be replaced immediately, that it was leaking horrible and required filling every day.
NONSENSE!
Two years later I just replaced the valve cover gaskets. They were leaking. NOT the head gaskets.
I replaced the water pump which showed evidence of a very minor drip. The radiator level was fine. Had been for the entire prior 2 years. NOT a problem.
I believe it was Ian who also said they detected a light ticking sound in the engine which he thought might be valves. Another chunk of money.
When I replaced the manifold gaskets not only was there no sludge to be seen but the valves, guids, etc., look essentially new.
I have concluded that Mekatron is much like taking your car to a dealer for service/​repair. Everything the mechanic spots as remotely being a potential problem is identified and then the sales pitch begins — and the mechanic gets a piece of the action right on up the line. This is speculation on my part, I can’t prove it — but I smell it!
Mekatron is an immaculately clean shop. The personal service is wonderful but boy oh boy, you really pay for the «experience».

Ian and Michael are the team that is Mekatron. I just emailed all the Mekatron details and very positive recommendation to my second coworker. Mekatron is fast becoming the shop of choice for our company.
The key benefits of Mekatron are they listen to you, they explain things to you in a no nonsense way, they are very schedule based, they call you with updates to the service to let you know how things are progressing and they will not undersell you, to only add up charges at the end. Other Unilocalers have mentioned they are at the high end of the price scale, and if you look at it «per task» it is spendy. But look at the overall process and the end result and you will see there is tons of value!
My last trip in was over $ 2,700! But this included, 2 new rear shocks, 2 new rear struts, 2 new lower control arms (from Mazda $$$!!!) 4 wheel alignment (over 1.5 hours of shop time) and I added a full synthetic oil change (just because it was in).
However Ian and Michael saved me over $ 3,000. I took it in at the same time for an exhaust leak and the Ian/​Michael team called the Mazda factory and determined it was still under warranty, but only had 100 miles left on the warranty. So I took it to the dealership right away and it took the dealership 5 days to fix the exhaust leak, including dropping the sub frame, broken exhaust studs and a brand new rear manifold AND catalytic converter!
When you meet Ian and Michael, you will wonder if you are actually in a garage. Ian has on a blazer and slacks, while Michael is working on the cars, he still has clean hands. Is this a garage? Or TopGear?

Great shop with excellent diagnostic capabilities.
My car had a difficult problem and it was resolved completely.
The pricing is not cheap but fair.
Service advisers actually understand what they are talking about unlike those at many dealerships. I do not think I will be using Mitsubishi dealership for repairs anymore. This shop is much better.

I’ve taken 3 different cars to Mekatron (Accura, Lexus, Toyota) a number of times, and it’s time for a review, after having a major service done on my 2002 Accura TL. They had told me last year I should do the timing belt, even though the mileage was under the limit, due to time, and after checking, I saw the manual agreed. I called a couple of places, and Mekatron was lower or equal to any good shop, so I had it done. No problems at all, and it actually seems like the car runs better, even though it ran fine before.
I enjoy going to the shop; it’s very clean, the people are all very nice, and Michael, up front, is very knowledgeable and patient, and takes the time to explain everything they do, including the whys and hows. They have a nice waiting room with good coffee, if you need to wait, and they provide either a free rental car, or a ride somewhere close by.
They are inexpensive compared to the lousy dealer nearby, comparable to any other professional shop, and AAA approved.
The owner, Ian, still runs the business, and I could tell after talking to him that he really cares about quality.
I really wonder about the one bad review from «Reviewer S» in San Jose — that’s a long way from Concord, maybe his review is in the wrong place. I see his reviews before and after are all in the San Jose or Peninsula area. I know mistakes happen, but what he describes really sounds atypical. Makes me wonder…

I’ve been going to Mekatron since about 2001, and they’ve done all the work on both my Subarus. I’ve had excellent service, they are very pleasant to deal with, are very knowledgable, and will take time to explain everything to you. They’ve installed new brakes, a new transmission, wheel bearings, basic periodic maintenance, you name it. Ian and Michael are honest, and have an excellent reputation. If you are not satisfied with a repair, just take it back in. Are they cheap? No, but you get what you pay for, excellent service. I wouldn’t take my cars anywhere else.

I was a customer for many years. And I would have given them a 5 if it would not have been for my recent visits.
For the past year I have had my car serviced here twice and it seems like they have grown too big and careless with the quality of service. They have always been on the expensive side, but I thought you get your money’s worth.
At my last visit they charged me for things they hadn’t done, for example they charged me for wheel alignment and didn’t do it, so I had to get the car to the shop again, which is a complete waste of time. They also didn’t wire things they had opened back properly and as a result a couple of buttons in the console were not working anymore. They rush through their orders and seem to neglect the details.
You probably get the same service for lesser elsewhere, so I wouldn’t recommend this place any more.

I’ve been a customer of Mekatron’s for years, and am unfailingly delighted with the work they’ve always done. They are honest, friendly, and do top-​quality work. And I’ve never felt that they charge too much. In fact, the last time I brought one of my cars in and asked only for an estimate to re-​attach the front bumper that some idiot valet managed to nearly take off they re-​attached it for free. Probably took them a good half hour or so, but I think they were afraid I’d try to do it myself and screw it up. Just plain great guys.
They only work on Japanese cars, and frankly, no matter how well made any other car is I won’t buy non-​Japanese, because there is no way I’d use another shop for auto repair.

It is true that this shop is honest and not trying to pull the wool over your eyes. They explain every step of what is going wrong with your car which makes it easy for you to understand. I would give it 5 stars, but I’m taking one away because you do pay for this honesty with your checkbook. I recently went here and was kind of taken back as to why it cost 800 $ to replace a waterpump on a $ 2000 VW. I guess it is what it is, but there is definitely no price competitiveness with this shop. But as with most things in life, you get what you pay for. Again, I would give 5 stars if there was more «value» in what was going on, but there really wasn’t, I paid money for the job, I wouldn’t exactly drive from out of town to go back to this place like other shops I’ve been to. (IE: Morgan’s in Santa Rosa, CA)
