Absolutely terrible customer service! I signed a contract for $ 105/​month Starting in January 2014. The very first bill was $ 186. I had to call them and wait on the line for 20 minutes just to get my bill straightened out. The next month they charged me around $ 135; still more than my contract stated, but I decided it was worth it to pay just to avoid calling their customer service line again.
Then third bill was for $ 233! Yet again I had to call their customer service line, wait for a representative to help me, and finally got my bill fixed. My April bill came in at $ 115, so we decided again to cut our losses and just pay it.
My May bill came in at $ 234. At this point I had had enough, and called their cancellation department. I told them that I was planning to cancel my service if they couldn’t fix it. In an attempt to keep me as a customer, they knocked the bill down to a reasonable amount, and gave us a year (which just expired last January, so only 9 months) of free HBO.
All was good for the rest of the year. Now they’re back at it again. This past month my bill was $ 191. I’ve called their customer service line about 8 times in the last 10 days, and have yet to reach an actual resolution. They only tried to sell my on upgrading my plan, and when they could tell that I wasn’t giving in I finally got one of the representatives to sign me up for a 1 year — $ 119/​month contract. When I went online to pay my bill, it was the same as before. And, I received an email from them saying that my new contract was now in place, and I would be paying a monthly fee «based on my usage.» That is not the contract that I agreed to. Now my current bill is late, despite the extension I was given.
Edit: After FINALLY getting my last bill «resolved» for $ 161, the representative set my contract up for $ 109/​month. I asked her to email me a copy of the contract, but she said it is against their policy to do that. I asked for her to have her supervisor to send me one, and she said it would be done. That was over two weeks ago, and I have still not received confirmation of my contract. What I have received is another bill for $ 149! This is ridiculous.
The billing department is the reason I’m writing this review. Our Internet has always been decent (its not as fast as what I’m paying for, but with all the other problems that’s the least of my concerns), and there aren’t many ways I know of that you can mess up on TV.
All in all, I would be happy with my service if it was the same as when I had signed up. But, with AT&T U-​Verse, it seems that the price given to you when you sign your contract is really more of a quote than anything else. If At&t is your only option for internet providers in your area, you might be better off just living without internet.

sbc yahoo dsl sucks. its slow and the connection craps out often. worse still (around 10 years ago) when i told em we wanted to cancel the dial up and get dsl, they continued to charge us for the dial up service as well, for much more than a year. on the bill it just said «yahoo». when i found that out i was trying to get my $ back. best they could do is give me 1 year of that $ back (via discounted bill!). their crappy policy is they dont go back more than a year. when i dumped them, it was great. i dont even use their phone service anymore. got cable internet and cell phones and they all work sooooo much better.

OK, so AT&T, with their siren song, entice me to save some coin and join their network of internet and phone packages. I was with Time Warner for the same services (video via DirecTV is the very best– read review) but the constant price increases to pay their executive’s bonuses was irritating. Mind you, TW’s phone service and internet was very good– sound quality on phone, clean and clear; internet offered 15 Mbps download. AT&T on the other hand, never said that I could not upgrade past 3 Mbps upon installation. And talk about poor phone service: A can with a string has better sound quality. Aggravating!
Internet speed is critical for a variety of apps. So I left TW and their V6 speeds (still below international standards) and got AT&T’s grandma in a wheelchair.
A week ago, AT&T’s service drops a duece and I’m without phone or internet. They fixed it after two days. I think their entire network in Newport is put together with bubblegum (not Bazooka, either) and bus tickets.
As soon as I get a chance, I’m switching back to TW. AT&T has a hack service for both the home and wireless and I don;t have the time to push grandma around to get on the worldwideweb. Peace out!

I am at my wits end. At the end of January of this year I took a ride over to the Brea AT&T store. I was greeted by John S. wearing a big smile. I had come into the store to inquire about high speed DSL. I had AT&T internet at my home in Chicago so I figured why not just stay with a company I had done business with in the past. That was my mistake. I opted for the 6MB speed that would cost me only $ 29.99 a month for a year, John told me. Let’s speed ahead a bit.
The day that my activation was promised came and went without any DSL. I called AT&T the next day and found that John S. goofed; he didn’t request any activation so I had to wait another 5 days. The rep I spoke with on the phone was nice and promised that she would waive my $ 36 activation fee. Good so far; here’s where it gets ugly. I get my first bill in the mail, I was a bit surprised to find the charge was $ 65 so I called AT&T again. I was told that the fee was correct for my business account. ??? I explained that I didn’t sign up for a business account, I signed up for a home account. The rep I spoke with was apologetic and promised me that she would drop my monthly rate to $ 24.95 for the inconvenience but I’d have to set up another account for the home. She then told me that I would have to talk to a rep that handles business accounts to cancel that account. I was transferred to a real ‘boob’ that I got into an argument with; he asked me, and I quote, «Why did you request a business account then???» I went nuclear. He finally figured it out and told me that he’d take care of it.
Fast forward to the other day. I received a letter from AT&T demanding that I pay $ 345 for a past due amount on a closed account or I’ll be sent to collections. I called AT&T again and was told that I would have to call a different number to reach business accounts. All they do is pass the buck. It took me a couple hours to calm down after this call.
I have spent hours on the phone with these incompetent idiots every three weeks and I’m sick of them and their company. If you want high speed DSL, DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER AT&T! They are the worst! I wish I could give them minus stars! I’ll be drinking early today!

Can someone tell me how AT & T is still in business? The one star, by the way, is because I have to put a star, otherwise I can’t review. In addition, I will probably get disconnected at least three times while I write this review.
The problem began when we let AT & T into our home. We live in an apartment with specific providers. I begged my husband not to get AT& T but, he still had some belief that this company is not all that bad.
We were promised internet service for $ 14.99 which is a good deal. So, we get the modem and we set it up and immediately after, the internet connection is on and off. I suggest that maybe, its just our signal or whatever but, for three months now we’ve had to deal with constant interruptions. Think of how annoying it is to be paying our bills and right when we send click, we get disconnected. It also takes a minute to go back on because the red light just keeps blinking in mockery. I also used the internet for homework and it takes me longer to research certain things because my internet would disconnect and I have to wait for it to «load» back up again.
On top of that, we never got $ 14.99 on our bill. The first bill we received was $ 35.00. Really? 35.00 for an internet that is worst than dial-​up? This service reminds me of when internet first came into place and you get disconnected every once in a while because your mom’s friend is calling to gossip.
So, we called customer service (–10 stars by the way) and at first they «fixed» it. They said it was an error but they said we would have to pay $ 20.00…fine. The second month, they wanted to charge us $ 40.00 so again, we called and explained that we signed up for the $ 14.99 and once again, they charged us $ 17.00 or something. The third month, they AGAIN send us a bill for $ 40.00, we called and same thing happened. Some representative said they fixed everything and we would get charged the right amount from now on (by the way, the modem we have is supposed to be their really good one. As one of the representative said, its the best modem they have)
We are not at all surprised that this month’s bill is $ 40.00 and again, we call but for the past three days it’s been hell trying to deal with this people. We keep getting transferred to five different people and each and every time we have to repeat ourselves. On more than one occasion, they’ll transfer my husband while he’s still talking to them. Yesterday, the connection on the phone was «interrupted» and they basically didn’t call us back.
Why would we want to pay $ 40.00 for this service? Like my husband says, its fine if we do but give us service, one that doesn’t disconnect every three minutes. And also, why do we have to call every month to fix our bill and tell you for three months that we’ve been having problems with our internet but it gets ignored?
I told my husband to cancel but guess what? We have to pay cancellation fees. We want to cancel because AT&T failed to provide us with the correct service and yet, we have to pay.
Take my experience and make a better decision for yourself.

I’m going on my 3^rd week and 3^rd service tech call for AT&T broadband service. Did a dry loop to sever land line from dsl. They’re thank you for cutting off the land line billing was to cut off my dsl as well. Took time to have them say, «looks o.k. from our side», and then schedule the tech to come out.
Had problems a half hour after he left. Had the same phone call — only complicated by my AT&T cell phone disconnecting every 5 – 30 seconds from my home. Charming service that was somehow remedied by getting a new sim card.
Second visit improved the speed to what I was paying for and got the line working. Began to experience frequent disconnects after he left. He checked it the next day and suggested the gateway modem/​router I had was probably cooked, and to check with the business office the next day for a discount on new one since I have had such problems getting basic connection.
Called business office the next day only to have them try and upsell me on u-​verse in order to get any break on the new modem. Considering the terrible experiences I had been going through, I told the person that i’d rather stand on my roof naked during a lightning storm with aluminum foil in my hands for reception instead of giving my tv service over to them.
Needless to say, I bought my new modem elsewhere and am back to the slow speeds AT&T have identified in their line. Waiting for third service tech visit.

I’m switching to some other ISP after a few years with AT&T Basic DSL Service (formerly SBC/​Yahoo). Pricing is ok but not the most competitive and they dropped news group service to Usenet and I never heard about it till I tried accessing it the other day, then reading some obscure notice on their web site. Tech support is pretty good but there were a few occasions when I had disconnect problems not due to me. DSL Extreme is about $ 5 cheaper per month with the Usenet access so may give them a try.
Update 8 – 2011: Did not go with DSL Extreme, too many low ratings on that outfit. In recent months a relative got a DSL subscription with
who are excellent and competitive. As for me I’m still with AT&T since I no longer have connection problems, seems like all of the problems I had in the past were due to deteriorated underground phone lines. After troubleshooting and repair by wire techs the last one determined that the wires had to be replaced… a big job for little ‘ol me as the dig crew came out and tore out the sidewalk in front of my neighbor, bored horizontally under their driveway and connected to a cable box and then ran the replacement wire thru an existing conduit to my house. All this took place over a 2 week period and I had a somewhat working DSL connection, but slow in the mean time. Didn’t cost me a cent, at least not directly… I’m ok now.
