Wonderful World of Animation

Today was the opening reception for WWA. You were invited. Everyone was, said the sign out front. Downtown Culver City was buzzing with Valentine-​weekend foot traffic and this gallery was especially packed!
I was surprised at how far back the place went from a seemingly small space, and how every wall was utilized well.
There were several nooks where collections could occupy neatly, include one above head.
The variety of animation-​related paintings, drawings, and 3D-​pieces was pretty good, although the subject matter of many of them came out of someone’s nightmare. They didn’t have the Disney/​Warner Bros/​Hanna Barbera studio cels (which are extensively listed on their website) but carried more of the independent artists’ inventory.
Each piece has a sticker with the artist’s name and price. Since galleries usually takes 20−50%, the prices reflect that. I found one that I like… at $ 400. If prints are available, this is noted as well.
Tonight on opening night, they had a photo booth with a guy dressed up as a white unicorn and he would pose fun shots with you. In the back, there were two girl unicorns on their break sipping wine and posing for photos.
Besides the customer service area where money and art are exchanged, there is a table for reception needs. Tonight there was a self-​service, honor system (money bucket) wine set up.
The place seems cool and I hope they stick around!
