Black-Eyed Pea

My husband and I have become fans of this restaurant, it has improved so much with the quality of their food, the southern cuisine is delicious, the servers are very nice, the only negative is that the restaurant could use a renovation, but it’s clean and down-​home comfortable. I highly recommend this place to anyone seeking stick to the ribs goodness, you won’t be disappointed!

We’ve been going to the BEP since my college-​aged girls were in preschool. Good food and atmosphere and attentive service. However, in the last few visits, we found that the service, food and atmosphere had declined substantially. Once piping and fresh rolls and cornbread tasted gritty like they’d been sitting in the kitchen too long. Everything was just off, overcooked veggies and fish, oil sodden fries and so on. Some of the wait staff dressed as though they were hired off the street, and several of the staff who’d been there for years weren’t around. So sad. For us, the end of a family tradition. We won’t return.

What a cute restaurant. Menu reminded me some of Cracker Barrel. Had delicious fried pickles (were a good sized portion) and the cheddar potato soup. Would recommend.

You can tell the food was canned, boxed, frozen. Music was awful. Some kind of soft rock from the 80’s. Horrible then, more horrible now. Music extremely loud. Restaurant could use some updating. We were surprised as we thought all these of the chain had already been closed down.

Not a bad place. Cornbread was good. As typical with food chains food was good but nothing outstanding. Service was excellent! Cinnamon rolls are delicious.

We’ve been enjoying The BEP since the late 80s when they had preserved jarred food for decoration. I can honestly say that not much has changed.
This trip my Pops ordered grilled catfish rather than fried on accident, it was good, but not his thing. Moms ordered her regular chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes and squash. The squash was off, earthy if you will. I told them to check it for spoilage. I had a burger and fried green tomatoes and it was fantastic. The service was good, not great, the wait was minimal… all in all decent. Just pay attention to your guests of they’re so old they order grilled not fried! Ha!
I would suggest that the staff be a bit more attentive and it would have been nice to see a manager just to check up on us.

They Don’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To
Until recently, I hadn’t visited a Black-​eyed Pea for well over a decade. Back in the day, its Southern-​themed offerings were pretty scrumptious. Unfortunately, this restaurant chain took a fall from grace over the years. Black-​eyed Pea still offers down home favorites like fried catfish, chicken fried steak, fried okra and a bunch of other fried stuff, but the quality isn’t what it used to be.
Founded some forty years ago in Texas, Black-​eyed Pea was once the epitome of affordable, high-​quality Southern cuisine. Families would come and feast on tasty comfort food in a warm, lively atmosphere. Today, the ambiance is more like that of a senior citizen retirement home; and, the quality of the food has meandered toward something like very fancy cafeteria food.
Big restaurant chains such as this one can no longer compete with the likes of local favorites. I suggest passing on Black-​eyed Pea, unless you enjoy the mundane.

So happy to be back in a town that has Black Eyed Pea. They still make the best Cheese Broccoli Soup! Love the Chicken Fried Steak and having Mom’s Meatloaf tonight. Good size portions feed my mother and I when we share an entrée with a cup of soup!

This is another old standby of mine. When I used to work in this neighborhood, over a decade ago, I had a boss who loved to go to this particular restaurant whenever he was in town. Since he was picking up the tab, we went here about once a month. In some ways the restaurant has improved. For example, you no longer choke on the clouds of cigarette smoke wafting in from the bar area. However, it feels that little money has been spent on maintenance, and the restaurant as a whole is getting somewhat rundown. That said, there is still reason to go here.
I mostly come here for lunch, and I try to do it on Wednesdays. I do it on that day because I love the chicken pot pie special on that day of the week. It is a large, flavorful, and piping-​hot pot pie. Even though I know the temperature, I still usually manage to burn my tongue each and every time. Every meal comes with wheat rolls and cornbread at the beginning. And, if you love your carbs, you can fill up on those and eat a light entrée, or take most of it home with you. A lot of people really enjoy the sides here. They all seem somewhat dated to me. I used to look forward to the «fried corn on the cob», but either it, or I (or both) have changed. Some people swear by the broccoli cheese casserole, but not me. I usually go with carrots and another veggie side. These are overcooked, but make me think I am eating slightly healthier than I really am.

Oh my god! All there is to say is, get the Irish Pie (without onions and greenbeans). Incredible. Delicious. So amazing.
Our server was the sweetest lady, spacing on her name though.
Only meh factor was the french fries. However the Irish Pie makes up for it.
Love love love this place. Cannot wait to return.

I love this place. It is not just for your grandparents in my opinion. The service is always great. Always. The store is ran very well. You can tell from the service, the food, the consistency and the fact that the managers are always visible in the dining room interacting with customers and employees.
I like a lot from this place. The meatloaf is good. I get it with the brown gravy. I’m not huge on the tomato sauce option. I wasn’t to fond of the chicken fried steak. It was tough. They are always tough at restaurants. I recommend making your own with a needling tenderizer. This allows you to flour the steak before you perforate it. Keeps moisture in. I think the problem with this one was that it wasn’t perforated enough.
The sides are always good. The dinner roles and corn bread. Ooooooh! So good. The mac n cheese is really good. Very creamy and smooth. The squash casserole is out of this world. It’s a pile of mush but it tastes so good. I like the Caesar salad too. I don’t think they make the dressing in house but it is good anyway. Roasted corn good, deep fried corn. not so much. Just not my style.
They also have beer.

They said best burgers in town but they must have been talking about a different town than the one I am in. Not good.

In town for work, this spot was directly across from the hotel I was staying at, just a mere stroll across a 4 lane highway. I opted to sit at bar for quick service for one. Service was good and food was average. Very homey, food that you would make at home on any given weeknight. I like an experience when I eat out and this did not satisfy my self-​admitted way too high foodie expectations. Thankful for its location to hotel, but would not return. There was a wanna be cowboy who decided to strike up a convo with me and another lady waiting on takeout. In 10 mins he shared pretty much he life story included his daily issue with ring around the collar due to pollution in the city. Thank God for my cellphone as a distraction out of that conversation.

The salmon Greek Salad was SO good! I liked that the salmon was shredded on top if the lettuce. The tomatoes were really flavorful! Chris had the pot roast and Jenelle had a mushroom burger sans bread. Now I am happy and full!

The food had no flavor whatsoever, I am no speaking about the spices. I mean there is no flavor of the actual food. How do they manage to get the flavor out of it? My guess is the only way to do it is to freeze and defreeze the food several times. By experience I know this is the method. I also ordered spinach on the side: I received a spinach «soup», absolutely flavorless, watery, quite unpleasant. The waiters treat you like you a piece of furniture.
STRANGE PLACE and a big waste of money. It’s not cheap there. Just buy a frozen package of goodies at Trader Joes and cook it at home. It will (no sarcasm!) taste much much better.

So if you ever tire of molecular gastronomy craze, try the down home normal food.
The service is decent and best of all it’s super cheap.

This is a great place to bring your Grandma to. But, just because it might be a place best suited for old people doesn’t mean you have to make a correlation with me coming here. Unfortunately, I didn’t have my grandma or anyone else’s grandma with me. I came here alone just for a quick bite.
A woodsy restaurant in the vein of a Ruby Tuesday or Applebees — but those others are wayyy cooler. It’s got a wide menu of fried southern things, salads, and gluten-​free items. Recommended mostly for an early dinner. Your grandparents will love a nice hot soup, the free basket of cornbread and rolls with honey, and won’t give you guilt for spending more than $ 10 per person. It’s perfect, with the exception of…
1. Free Rolls and Cornbread: The rolls were very doughy, the cornbread dry (and I love when there is actually corn kernels, but alas… not any to be found). Throw tons of butter and honey on everything, and it’s definitely edible (but then, isn’t everything with butter and honey on it?). Mind you, the ‘basket’ include 1 of each type. Initially, I was like WTH — that’s a ‘basket’? Then, after a few bites of each — I was thankful.
2. Chicken Pot Pie: A lunch special with 2 sides = $ 8.99. I think I found 3 small pieces of chicken in it, frozen vegies, and a whole lot of gravy. I vote for the crust to lose the overwhelming flavor of oil and salt, and add more butter to make it tastier and more flaky. The sides I chose: spinach (from frozen), and beans and rice (all too bland, I suppose I like it more dirty).
All in all, since the sign is missing any kind of southern or country cookin’ branding which I think they’re offering (or trying to), here’s a few ideas for a subline:

Came across this place on accident after searching for a place to eat. I wasn’t to sure what kind of food was served here, but as soon as walking in and looking at the menu, I knew it was homestyle cooking. They seem to have a lot of good deals here, mondays and wednesdays are the big days for cheap meals. They also have daily specials for drinks as well. The menu is vast with variety of appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, ribs, steak, chicken and other dishes. I went for the chicken fried chicken, which was pretty good. The gravy isn’t as tasty as some other places, but pretty decently made. They give you bread and cornbread to munch on while you wait, which was also very delicious.
The service here was polite and fast. They don’t seem to have too much of a wait as well. The prices are decent for the style of food and if you can score one of the deals that’s even better.
