History

Established in 1997.

The company was founded by Martin Simenc following the experience of assisting his father to recover from a major stroke. Martin made numerous home modifications to accommodate his father’s safety and accessibility needs. In doing so, he saw the dramatic difference his efforts made to his father’s quality of life and realized that many other seniors must have similar needs.

As a result, Martin left a corporate risk management career to start Home Safety Services. He has successfully applied many industrial risk management philosophies to the home environment while instilling in his team the same passionate and family oriented care that he continues to provide to his parents.

Our unique commitment to excellence includes the pursuit of every applicable designation including Licensed General Contractor (738 881), Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) and Accreditation by The Joint Commission. We are also a GSA Approved FSS Contract Holder.

Business Owner

Martin Simenc founded Home Safety Services in 1997 which has since helped over 20,000 Bay Area families improve their safety and independence at home. Martin is a pioneer in the field of «safetyfitting» homes to accommodate the needs of older adults. He is a recognized expert in fall prevention, home safety modifications and aging in place.

Martin earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (Santa Clara University) and an MBA in Finance and International Business (University of San Francisco).

He is a Licensed Professional Fire Protection Engineer (PE) and Licensed General Contractor, Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS), Certified Environmental Access Consultant (CEAC) and has earned the Associate in Risk Management (ARM) designation.

When your health and safety or that of a loved one who has a physical disability is at stake, you want to work with someone who knows what they are doing, shows up when they say they will show up, and makes the process easy for you. That’s exactly the experience we had with Home Safety Services!
This company operates in a professional, helpful, and responsible manner. We filled out their online form for an assessment request, they called us back a day later, and we scheduled an appointment for them to come and install the grab bars in our showers.
The technician arrived exactly on-​time (he touched base with us earlier in the day), assessed our needs in person, took measurements with my feedback, and then installed the grab bars over the next hour or so. We now have three in each shower (they normally recommend two, but we specifically requested three), and I couldn’t be happier!
The technician was clearly knowledgeable about physical disabilities, aware of the best and safest ways for someone to use a grab bar to stand up from a sitting or lying position in the tub or on a shower bench, and discussed it with us in a respectful, professional manner. The total price for their time/​labor, expertise, 6 high quality grab bars, and any taxes was $ 915. It would be considerably less for someone who went with the usual recommended 2 grab bars per tub/​shower, as they estimate $ 150/​grab bar installed.
I cannot recommend this company highly enough!

I have been reading some of the reviews from previous customers of Home Safety Services, and I have to count myself among the ones who said that they were very satisfied with the service they got. I am very happy with the results I got from having them come to my home, on March 10, 2015, to install five safety bars in my two bathrooms.
I put a horizontal bar, and a vertical bar in each tub shower, and a shorter diagonal bar by the commode. I will admit that it WAS a bit pricey, at an average of $ 153 per bar, completed cost, and I sympathize with older folks, like me, who wrote reviews that found HSS a bit cost prohibitive. In my case, however, I took great comfort in knowing that these guys, with their years of experience at this, really knew what they are doing, and would do the job right, and on time, and with NO mistakes.
Sure, I could have called a friend, or hired a general handy man, or the gardener (as one lady suggested), or even attempted to do it myself (YIKES!!), and things might have turned out okay. But, I wanted to make sure that there were no mistakes in measuring, centering, and drilling into my nice tile, and that these guys would locate a strong wall stud to use as a secure anchor. They did all of this, and did it perfectly. The job was done within two hours, and there were no delays. They had the bars, and all the tools that they needed to do the job, right with them, in a truck that was well equipped.
I realize people differ in their opinions and needs, but I found peace of mind assured with this service company, and I highly recommend them, if you really want a first class, professional job, done quickly and guaranteed, with no worries. I would use them, again, if I have any other safety needs. I rated them one star less than perfect, only because I sympathize and agree, with the older folks who found the price was a little too high for this needed service to older people, even though the work they do IS first class.

He thoroughly explained what type of baby proofing he would recommend and quickly and expertly installed gates, latches, and brackets. This company is fantastic! My husband and I moved into a tri-​level house at the end of July 2014 and had our baby early September 2014. Being that our home had more than one set of stairs we wanted to seek the help of a company to provide feedback on how best to go about baby proofing so that when the time came, we weren’t trying to put out fires. We wanted to be proactive and at least start some stuff now to get in the habit of using things like a baby gate everyday so that it won’t be such a huge change once our little one starts moving around.
Jack came by to provide a consultation and did a great job. You are opening up your home to a stranger and he was very professional and put us at ease. There was no sales pitch, just helpful and useful information. He gave us the pricing up front and recommendations, but never once pushed us to purchase anything or have anything installed. The great thing is if you have already have some of the items, they will only charge an install fee.
A couple weeks later we decided to have one baby gate installed. It is a very narrow stair case and Jack was able to provide us with a gate that would fit and he did the install. We were happy to not have to deal with the headache of doing it ourselves. Money can buy peace of mind! We don’t have to worry about our little one pulling on it and it coming off the walls or causing damage.
We only met with Jack. He did both the consult and install and with that alone, I highly recommend this company. Even if it is just for the consult to be aware of the areas in your home that need extra attention, it is well worth it!

I recently had to have grab bars and other safety equipment installed in my home. Being a do-​it-​yourselfer all my life, it wasn’t easy letting some one else do it for me. Julie Beck, however made the process more than comfortable. Her professionalism and craftsmanship were beyond reproach and the Hardware they provided was of excellent quality She even had to deal with my Grand Daughter «Princess Busy Hands» trying to get involved. I would recommend Home Safety Services to any one needing home safety equipment.

This review is for Jack and Home Safety Services. My in-​laws who are in their 80s needed their home modified because my mother in– law fell. We googled and found Home Safety Services who made a quick appointment for us. Jack J. came to assess the home and how my in-​laws moved about. Jack was very professional, knowledgeable and pleasant to deal with. He went above and beyond in removing hazards, making recommendations and installed the majority of the many items the same day. He cleaned up after himself and his work was top –notch. I would highly recommend Jack and this company for home modifications for Seniors.

All of the previous positive reviews are accurate, but if you break down what you’re getting, it comes at a very high cost. A tiny hook to latch your cabinet costs you $ 9. Everything they sell you be bought on Amazon for half the price. When you call them on it, they say the price includes installation, but here’s an example. One gate had two 9-​inch extensions. They cost $ 20 each on Amazon, but Home Safety charges $ 50 each. How long does it take to clip on a 9-​inch extension? 5 seconds? 10? Certainly not $ 100 worth of time. We all get so tied up in our kids’ safety that we’re willing to flush hundreds of dollars down the drain. If I could do it again, I’d get the assessment (they charge for that, so it’s all fair), take notes, then buy and install the stuff myself or with a handyman.

Home Safety Services was a real life-​saver for me. I broke my foot, and am adapting to all kinds of situations. Getting into the shower without putting weight on my bad foot was a problem. I called Home Safety Services and they made an appointment for me the next day. Jack came out, assessed the situation and installed grab bars right during the visit. Today Home Safety Services installed ‘grab bars’ in my shower. This is a Godsend, as I have had recent surgeries and am dependent on devices for stability.

We had a very positive experience with Jack from Home Safety Services. After inspecting the house room-​by-​room, he provided us with a list of helpful safety tips, as well as childproofing equipment recommendations (including samples for us to inspect), all delivered in a low-​pressure manner. For example, Jack explained that if we wanted to do some of the installation ourselves to save money, we could purchase the equipment with a discount code he provided us — we ended up going that route for some of the suggestions. Ultimately, we identified the equipment that we wished to install, and Jack did the installation that day in a very timely manner. We especially appreciated that he was willing to work around our baby’s nap schedule, inspecting the nursery only after our son had woken up, and waiting to install the equipment near the nursery until our son was awake again (working on other areas of the house in the meantime). For parents looking for childproofing services, we would definitely recommend HSS.

I needed two grab bars installed in a fiberglass tub enclosure (3 fiberglass walls & tub as one unit) for my aging mother.
Home Safety Services sent Julie over. She’s awesome. We discussed the purpose for the grab bars, as well as positioning of the bars. She considered all the factors (mom’s height & weight, as well as a shower chair in the distant future) and made her recommendations. She broke down the pricing. I approved and she got to work.
The whole job was done under an hour. Julie was prompt, professional and very personable.
Note:
— the bars are stainless steel with a peened texture (slightly coarse for better grip when wet)
— the bars were not set on the stud, but strongly secured to the fiberglass wall; I was concerned about this, but the company stands by it and backs it (I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt — I’ll be sure to contact them if any issues arise)
— the installation requires no curing time; it was water tight and sealed (the shower was good to go after installation)

If you are reading this Unilocal review for a baby proofing consultancy /​installation service, then you are probably already heading down the path of paying for some helpful advice. My situation was that I am a renter in a multistory townhouse and I wanted to make sure that my safety gates on the stairs did not damage the banisters. In addition, the mounting angles were awkward due to the layout of the town home and all of those child safety blogs were completely unhelpful as they showed the most simplistic home layouts (coupled with a picture of a smiling parent passing through the safety gate). I had already spent hours reading up on gates and childproofing items only to realize that there was a high probability that I would ultimately end up buying the wrong pieces and spending hours trying to install it (followed by several expletives).
Enter Home Safety Services, a referral from Day One in Town and Country Village. Yes, Home Safety Services is expensive, but boy did they save me the headache of having to pick out the right childproofing pieces and figuring out how to install them. Michael was great at giving tips that I should be thinking about around the house and I was never pressured to buy anything from him. He even let me watch him put all the gates together (thus I tell my wife that I get partial credit for the installation). When I think about the hours and headache I saved from a professional installation service, I personally felt it was well worth it.
For the many do it yourselfers out there, it might make sense to just request the hour consultancy ($ 120 — yeah I know), find out what gates and other items they recommend and just got buy it and install it yourself. Either way, this is a win win service for parents that are struggling with which child safety items to purchase for their particular home layout.

You make the decision. Here is our experience:
You pay $ 90 to pay for them to pitch you. It’s a sales call.
The person who came out was very nice, but only sold a narrow line of products which he repetitively pitched after being told that safety bars, or ceiling floor pole would not solve the problem.
We were told the $ 90 sales call would be deleted from the cost of a safety bar installation at a cost of $ 125 -$ 90 = $ 30. We were billed $ 195 for the bar installed + $ 90 for the sales call = $ 285.
Or you could buy the same product, bar, mollie’s, and tax for under $ 50. And, either install yourself or have a friend for a savings of $ 235. We had a handy person do it in about 10 minutes.
If you have a lot of money to spare it’s a good service. If you’re elderly and need to rely on honorable business practices, I think you can do better asking a local neighbor, handyman or even gardener to help install a few bars.
We thought we were having a public service agency come to the home. Instead we had a for profit agency with highly accelerated pricing structure.

Michael baby/​toddler-​proofed our new house, top to bottom. He installed swing gates at the top and bottom of the stairs, installed a fireplace gate, bolted heavy furniture to the wall, swapped out baby-​safe outlet panels, and baby-​proofed the front door.
My peace of mind is restored! He did great work (no dents, dings or nicks), was courteous, and informed me of all prices before installing. One of the swing gates started to squeak a few days later and Martin (the owner) trouble-​shot the issue over the phone with me. Michael came back a few days later to fix the problem for good at no charge.

We had Home Safety Services come out this morning to install safety rails in our shower and toilets. We didn’t know the first place to look for someone to do this, so we got a recommendation from an Occupational Therapist. She told us they were professional and very capable.
Julie came out to do the installation. She not only recommended the safest placement of the rails, but also took into consideration my requests that they look as aesthetically pleasing as possible. When she finish they looked great and are easy to use. She also left the rooms clean and no marks on the walls. She was not only very professional, but a pleasure to have in my home.
The price was exactly what they quoted when I called to set up the installation. Any additional safety needs we have, we know who to call.

We had Home Safety Services come out and babyproof our home. They were excellent! I’m pretty good about identifying unsafe zones, and our guy pointed out several things I hadn’t considered – towels on the oven door, runners on the table, etc. He even discovered a few plastic dry cleaning bags I had in my baby’s closet – yikes!
We had attempted to do some babyproofing on our own thinking we could manage it. We had some serious fails – namely, the tension mount babygate we got that our toddler started using as a climbing wall. It was unstable and unsafe, and a few more attempts at climbing it would have resulted in it tipping over onto our hard floor.
Jack came in and did an excellent job. No pressure from him – he simply laid out the different options in the areas he identified, and we picked what we wanted to concentrate on. He was prompt, courteous, and I felt very comfortable having him in my home with me.
I have no qualms about giving them a 5 star review. If you use them, you won’t be disappointed. Thanks again for the great work and peace of mind that comes from knowing my house is safe for our family!
