History

Established in 2007.

Stars Above Hawaii was created to compliment the growth of the Ko Olina Resort, Oahu’s premier resort on island, and to fill an evening niche, as well as to fulfill a dream.

The Ko Olina Resort is located on the dry and clear side of the island. It has ideal dark skies for star gazing and romancing under the stars on the beach.

Stars Above Hawaii provides star shows throughout the Ko Olina Resort at each of the hotels and timeshares, as well as at special events for local businesses and private functions.

Stars Above Hawaii is a recognized leader in the community for its philanthropic outreach efforts, such as for the American Heart Association, March of Dimes, and other charitable nonprofit organizations. In 2013, Stars Above Hawaii was recognized by Hawaii Business Magazine as being the most charitable company in Hawaii!

Greg M.

Business Owner

Greg is an astronomer and ambassador to JPL/​NASA in the Solar System Ambassadors Program. He is also a Council Member to the Friends of the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii, as well as a member of the Polynesian Voyaging Society. He has spent his entire life studying the stars above and sharing his passion with all who wish to explore the universe.

Greg’s passion is contagious. He has a natural ability to take the complex and make it understandable to his audiences of all ages from all over the world. Greg will also name the stars not only in English, but in Hawaiian and Japanese to meet the needs of his guests.

I definitely recommend taking a tour of the Universe with Greg. He is so knowledgeable and really takes the time to make sure you know what you are looking at and answer any questions you may have. I was so excited to see Jupiter, some of it’s moons, Mars, and it’s Grand Canyon.

I recommend this for the young and old alike. It is a fun adventure, listening to Greg (he’s very knowledgeable — shoot him a question about the stars and/​or planets) talk about the Hawaiian navigation, the birth and death of a star, the planets and why they are a particular color, etc. I brought my 3 younger children (9 – 13) who understand astronomy and have an interest in it. We enjoyed the 1+ hour adventure through the skies. We will return again during a night that the moon isn’t so bright and maybe when the moon is full. The brighter the moonshine, the more difficult it is to see the galaxies. Kama’aina rates are available. Thank you Greg!

Been scuba diving with sharks? Snorkeled with wild dolphins? Hiked Haiku Stairs already? If you’ve done all that and more you’re probably in need of something new and awe inspiring. Stars Above Hawaii is just what you’re looking for. With 600 times the power of the naked eye the telescope will get you super detailed views of the moon’s surface. You’ll also see (if the season is right) Jupiter and her moons, the Pleides, a nursery of stars, Sirius and other celestial bodies over 11 million miles away. Thus is fun for adults and kids alike and Kama’aina are 50% of the customers so it’s not just for tourists.

My husband and I went to the session 3 days before we left the island after we lived in Hawaii for 4 years. It was at one of the lagoons at Ko’olina. There are two time slots (8pm and 9pm) and we took the 9pm slots. The sky was clear and we were able to see the moon and its numerous craters, Saturn, new born stars, and dwarfs and the galaxy through the telescope lens. We also saw many shooting stars with naked eyes. Greg showed us really neat views while explaining to us what they were. It was satisfying to have our nerdy questions answered by the expert.

A group of friends and I attended this viewing session at Ko’olina last week. We were able to see Saturn, stars, and moons through two powerful telescopes before the clouds blocked us out. Greg was extremely knowledgeable and a joy to listen to. He provided information about what we were viewing and explained the ancient Hawaiians’ method of wayfinding. 10⁄10 would do again.
