Residence Inn San Diego La Jolla

We had a great stay. I highly recommend this place for families or big groups. The staff and check-​in process was very friendly. They were able to accommodate adjacent rooms for our big party.
The rooms were big and perfect for all 3 families. We brought in pizzas and spent the night in one of the bigger rooms playing games. The bed was very comfortable.
The morning breakfast buffet was great. Make your own waffles, hot eggs and potatoes, sausage, cereals, bagels…
You definitely get your bang for your buck here. This was our first experience at a Residence Inn and will definitely look into other locations based on the price and comfortable accommodations.

Consistent and spacious accommodations. I stayed here with a few friends on a trip and it fit the bill. This area of San Diego has many points of interest and the drive around is not too bad the time I had been in the area.
The breakfast area is nice and economically satisfying as well. They also do a great job on special deliveries if you arrange ahead of time!

We arrived early afternoon prior to check in time and were surprised when told that we could do an early check in. The receptionist Monica was very cordial. Also upon check out we found Claudia very helpful as well with info on the latest restaurants to go to. The facilities were well kept and we could see that the staff showed a great deal of pride. I wanted to give this Residence Inn 5 stars but I found that the free WIFI was not quite up to par as it kept disconnecting from my devices which made it frustrating when trying to do work. All in all I felt the whole experience was no less that excellent.

Great for large parties. We slept 7 – 9 for a week. Two full bathrooms and kitchenette are great features. One of the best breakfast buffets I’ve had… for a hotel. The room showed its age a little, but the pool was heated and staff was great. $ 15 a night for parking, so budget that in (buffet for two will make that up) but overall a very good value for your money, Especially since it may save you from renting two rooms. Average drive time to San Diego, 10 – 15 minutes.

This hotel was comfortable and appeared good at first. While at The Marriott Residence Inn in La Jolla our 2 bikes were stolen in the middle of the night. It was locked and attached to our rail on our second story deck right outside our door out of sight. We were told when we arrived this was a safe place for our bikes. After the incident the manager told us this was a high risk area for theft– I really think we should have been told that on arrival and that this hotel should have storage for valuable bikes. Now I will look for an older used bike as I feel I do not want to take this risk again– I feel the Marriott should really protect their clients from theft like this. We should have been told by the staff that the bike was not safe outside at all. Live and learn– The parking is expensive here and we had a hard time finding a place to park and always had to park far from our unit. Between that and our stolen bikes I will never stay there again.

The location of this Residence Inn is perfect– close to the freeways, UCSD, and less than two miles from La Jolla Cove. There are a lot of local eateries that is within walking distance. The room is cozy and had more than enough room for three people. The couch folds out to a bed. Kitchenette is equipped with all the necessities. The restroom is a bit cramped and I wasn’t a fan of the shower. I do like how the sink is separate from the rest of the restroom.
It was relative quiet and I wasn’t woken by loud neighbors, crying babies, or music. We visited the pool a couple times. Even though it’s small, it does the job. Even during the early morning hours, there were a lot of kids and families already. Breakfast was good and consisted of waffles, cereal, parfaits, scrambled eggs, potatoes, ham, etc. They even had the soda machines available along with juice, coffee, tea, and milk. I would stay here again!

So this will be my first review on social media ever, so this should say ALOT! My mom and I came here recently from Aug.20−24, we were visiting my little brother who was in San Diego for a month with his ship. We stayed in the Penthouse suite which was AMAZING, felt like home. Us coming from a military family we love the feeling of home. The breakfast buffet was awesome, so much to choose from. My brothers and I plan to come back out to San Diego when Comic con returns in 2016, and we are definitely staying here again.

This hotel completely saved our butts! We came to San Diego for my husband and I to run the AFC Half marathon. We had originally booked may another hotel only to get to down and find it not to our needs at all (see Lafayette hotel review). Residence inn came in for the total rescue. Hotel room was spacious and for the most part clean. Good location. At first I was annoyed about paying for parking but after spending time in San Diego, it seems common. And the breakfast is seriously incredible. Way above and beyond what you would expect for a free hotel breakfast. Glad we ended up here. On a trip that felt like everything went by Murphy’s law, this was one of the few bright spots

Our stay here during July 4^th weekend was uneventful and average at most. It’s comfortable, clean, no frills. Location is close to a lot of entertainment. Few minutes to the beach and shops. Our room was clean, fully furnished. The kitchenette was perfect esp. when we barbequed one night for dinner. The parking’s aplenty even during that crowded 3 day weekend. The breakfast buffet was as expected of all RI, decent and abundance. The pool was small but clean and serve its purpose of fun for our toddler. I enjoyed the jacuzzi which is situated close to our room. Overall, this hotel is pretty much as expected of all RI trademark. I accomplished a fun and relaxing 3 day weekend break, thanks to RI!
For that, 3.5 stars.

I really love this hotel. But they charge 100 $ for having a dog. Not even a human. He’s like the size of a foot. Really a waste of money. Worth turning back home to drop him off or not stay.
If you have a lowered car, stay away from coming in the premises of this hotel!!! Bumps everywhere and nonstop scraping.

I was pleasantly surprise. I was expecting the worse for the price i paid but wow!!! I am impressed !! I got a studio suite with a king bed and a sofa pullout! It has a complete kitchen and microwave, ref and mini office !!! Feels more like a condo resort than a hotel. The free breakfast buffet was amazing!!! I had to stop myself from stuffing myself!!! Lol. Its an easy 15 dollar breakfast buffet thats free!!! Its very close to downtown la jolla and ucsd is like 2 blicks away. I will definitely be back every time i have to stay in the area.

Stayed here for 2 nights while our place was being worked on with our 2 small dogs. +1 for pet friendly and only a $ 100 non refundable pet deposit. Check in staff is very nice and efficient. Parking is $ 15 per car per day. Not bad. Parking can be tough to find at night but I found a place and trekked back to our room after unloading my car.
They put us toward the back of the hotel where the pet area is. I don’t like the placement of the front doors at all. Adjacent to each other.
The room smelled bad when I walked in. Like old carpet and no air for a long time. I immediately opened the slider to get fresh air in, now understanding why my neighbor had her front door open. There are no additional windows for air flow. I kept the air on later in the day and it helped a lot.
I will say the room was clean and tidy and well appointed. Kitchen w all the amenities.
The bed was hard! I like softer beds. But the pillows were awesome!
I just spent about 20 minutes trying to kill ants in the kitchen. Ugh. I don’t even have any food or dirty dishes out.
The grounds have lots of seating areas and it was very busy (beginning of spring break). Nice community feel and nicely landscaped.
I could hear my neighbors upstairs walking, flushing and talking. I hate when the walls are thin. I hope they didn’t hear us. Squeaky squeaky goes the bed… Lol!
Anyway w all the negatives it won’t deter me from staying again. The staff is more that great and it served our needs being close to home/​work and dog friendly.

There is a daily parking fee, which is the norm for that area, but the parking lot is terrible. The stalls are very small so if you have anything other than a small compact expect your car to get hit or you hitting the car next to you. The worst part of this was the HUGE BUMPS! My car is not a low profile and still got scrapped while driving through them. So you either have a big truck and avoid them but your car will get hit once you park, or you have a car that fits on their stalls but expect your car to scrape going through those bumps… You cannot get both.
The room was clean but it had a stale smell to it when we walked in. After we aired the room for a bit it became tolerable.
The last thing was that we had to check out at the counter since they didn’t drop our receipt under our door. Not sure is this the norm nowadays but every hotel I have ever stayed at has done this. This was a small inconvenience but one that I haven’t had in other places, where I could check out remotely.

Just the kind of stay I was looking for. This Residence Inn does an excellent job with the hospitality. I stayed there for a week. The daily breakfast spread was very well stocked and well maintained. Lots of good hot breakfast options. I eat healthy, and found that the eggs and oatmeal were ideal, and they even had a great supply of hard boiled eggs for days I wanted to up the egg white content in my breakfast. The dinnertime receptions were also really well appointed. I went to the BBQ night, where they keep a large variety of food coming, grilling burgers and dogs outside, and putting lots of other things out — people were going nuts for the rich-​looking brownies, the macaroni salads, etc. I was thrilled to find a fresh salad bar with lots of nice looking veggies, and (yay!) a big tub of cubed chicken breast. Good to go!
Fitness center was an important thing for me, and the one here is… enough. Pretty minimal setup, two treadmills (one runs loud as hell), one elliptical (with some disconcerting rattling), and a recumbent bike; plus an adjustable bench and a rack of dumbbells. The rack goes up to 50 lbs., but at the time of my stay, one of the 50s was missing, as long as one of the (I think) 5s. There is enough floor space to get stuff done. This minimal setup is enough to get your workout in, but nothing to write home about.
The service in the rooms was quite good. One thing to note about the rooms though is that walls are THIN! You can hear your neighbors moving about, opening and closing closets, showering, etc. quite clearly, so if this sort of thing bothers you, you have been warned! Not a huge issue for me.
Kitchen was decently appointed — I was able to cook and take care of myself quite well.
I can confirm what others have said about the WiFi here — it is still terrible. I did much better setting up my phone as a hotspot, and did not need more than that. However, if you will have data-​intensive needs, you might want to think about provisioning something else or staying elsewhere. Although I do recall that as I researched places to stay in this area, just about everything I found in my per diem range seemed to get terrible marks for WiFi.
And yes, be aware that you will be charged a nightly fee for parking — I think it is around $ 14.
It is worth noting that you are within walking distance of some good shopping, including a Whole Foods, several theaters, restaurants, etc.
Overall — if I were to return to La Jolla soon, I would stay here again. I maintained a very healthy lifestyle, was close to my business at UCSD, and enjoyed the area amenities.

So say a couple of my new agey buds, who will «yell» at me if I didn’t nail their view verbatim. They «Om» at whim never wear shoes, not even when it rains, lecture me about my carbon footprint. But actually, I’m inclined to agree with their quote, especially as in 2009, on January 1, when a seagull landed on my terrace, threw up the prix fixe from a local resto’s dumpster; metaphorically, like that big bird’s roily tummy, so did the economy, my portfolio.
Well, ’15’s already better than that for me (hopefully for ya’ll too) with the key being gaining more knowledge to fulfill harmonious goals of both enhancing my business and meeting credential retention requirements. Usually, I do this online BUT this course, THE one that started my gotta-​have-​it-​juices pumping meant leaving my zipcode for hands on training, 21-​hours of it at UCSD, hence, travel and accommodations. Secured the course in September!
Residence Inn San Diego La Jolla was listed but not recommended, as were others, by the provider. I reserved a room for the weekend in spite of all-​over-​the-​board Unilocal reviews because if I’m spending time in intensive learning, all I need is affordable, clean and close. Close it was, staying here put me 0.02 miles from my classes, an easy walk, however hotel shuttle service is available on the hour, within 5 miles M-​Fri, 6:00 AM-9:00 PM.
Booked a «studio» in November for this past weekend with a one day prior to arrival, no charge cancellation option. Arrived and although this was my first visit was upgraded to «elite» status, perhaps due to the conference or was it my Unilocal Elite ’15 badge appearing halo like?
Room was clean, comfy, cozy, but as soon as I viewed the fully appointed galley kitchen, I had a forehead-​slap-​V-​8 moment! Forgot to pack vittles beyond Trader Joe’s Cold Brew. No worries, Residence Inn has a lobby PX, «The Market», so a couple of CPK, Margarita Flatbreads and a half bottle of chard, dinner! You’ll also find Hagen Daz mini gelatos, beer by the bottle and sundries like OTC pain relievers, contact lens cases, etc.
Debated to take the train or drive. Drive won out. Residence Inn’s parking is $ 15 per day. Turned out to be worth it though due to Sunday’s rain and no weekend shuttle service.
Day one was surprised to find the gratuity I left for housekeeping still on the night stand, especially since Marriott and A Woman’s Nation
joined «forces to increase appreciation for hotel housekeepers whose care and hard work often go unnoticed.» Day two, left day one and day two’s on the bed, gone, good!
Marriott’s are green. According to the card on the vanity, «Every day millions of gallons of water are used to wash towels that have only been used once. You make the choice. A towel on the rack means, ‘I will use again’. A towel on the floor means, ‘Please exchange’.» Placed my towels on the rack and received exchange three days in a row, oh well. Really enjoyed the Paul Mitchell™ shampoo and conditioner and the high-​speed hairdryer (under the sink) available if you forget to pack yours like I did.
In room wifi is free but sluggish; upgrade to Connect Plus for additional speed @ $ 4.95 just not sure if that’s a one time charge or daily as I ended up using my phone’s wifi hotspot.
Free continental buffet breakfast included with the price of your room. I checked it out and although perfectly fine, the quantity, like all buffets, just didn’t appeal to me so I passed.
This Residence Inn is pet friendly, has a gym, spas, barbecues, will shop for groceries (leave your list at the front desk) and do laundry/​cleaning for you or DIY at the 24-​hour coin laundry and all rooms are non-​smoking. Smoking is permitted 25-​feet from room entrances and common areas and that’s what keeps my stay from being a solid five star. Not just the wafting from smoker friendly venues but I suspect, once upon a time, smoking was allowed in the bungalow/​condo type units here where the traces linger, although subtle. I was aware because I’m hyper sensitive but that «third-​hand» wasn’t unpleasant enough to request another room.

The rooms were clean but super old looking. The jacuzzi by our room was super cloudy and another one we went too was broken and the bubbles did not come on. The rooms and linens are smelly. Very small pool. It felt like we were at a old apartment complex with popcorn ceilings. The plus was that it was quiet on our side and our friends paid for our stay:) also the staff is very friendly. We skipped the breakfast because it was super crowded!
And we thought it was ridiculous they charge for parking.

Too bad I can’t post 0 stars. I’m only 5 days into what’s bound to be an insufferable month. Hopefully I can convince my company to move me to a less miserable place.
Don’t be fooled by the pictures of remodeled rooms or stainless steel appliances. A stainless steel fridge is just as gross when it has ants in it.
Some back story: I have a fantastic job, but it comes with a price– I spend (generally) 10 months a year living in hotels, sublets, extended stays and corporate housing.
I work 10am until midnight every day, so a lot of luxuries are lost on me, I need a safe place to sleep, access to laundry services, and wifi.
This trip was a little over 30 days and the company I was working for booked this hotel.
First things first: Day 2, while in the shower, MY WATER GETS TURNED OFF. Turns out they had planned to turn off the water for weeks in order to replace a busted water main, I just never got the memo when I checked in.
My biggest complaint, however, is the wifi:
The «free» wifi is worse than dial-​up. In fact, I just came from a hotel in the middle east that had faster internet. Those packets had to cross two war zones and an ocean, and it was still ten times faster. The Residence Inn offers «High Speed Wifi» for $ 5 a day; meaning they are INTENTIONALLY limiting the speed of the free service in an attempt to suck every last penny out of you.
I need internet for an hour at the beginning of the day to check email, skype my family whom I haven’t seen in months, and check the news. Skype is OUT OF THE QUESTION. Email works SOMETIMES. The free wifi is hopeless. I refuse to pay $ 150 over the term of my stay just to check my email and video chat with my loved ones in the morning.
Sure, bad wifi isn’t uncommon, usually I just tether to my iPhone and pay the extra $ 10 or so for the added data usage. Which brings me to the next problem:
Verizon customers! TURN BACK NOW! There’s no service at the Residence Inn. Coupled with the crap wifi, this means nobody can reach you when you’re in your room unless you forward your calls to the hotel. I’m sure there’s a hefty minutely-​charge for inbound calls knowing these guys.
Laundry
The room isn’t the grossest I’ve been in, and the machines are mostly clean. It costs $ 3 per wash and $ 3 per dry. In quarters. Detergent at the front desk costs $ 3 also. I live in New York City and could have had my laundry picked up, washed, folded, and returned to me in less than two hours for what I paid here. But that’s to be expected from a hotel laundry room.
Ants
There are ants everywhere. In the kitchen, under the toilet seat. It’s gross. Based on my interactions with the front desk, I bet you the review mentioning bug spray is probably accurate.
Housekeeping
They’ve done a good job, but every day I have a new surprise left for me. Day 1 was a spray bottle of the green kill-​all-​super-​bleach, sitting in the tub. Neat. Day 2 was a filthy rag, sitting right by the front door. I’m convinced they’re communicating with the next day’s housekeeper. I generally don’t want housekeeping to come in, I’m not that messy. But I didn’t have a do-​not-​disturb sign, and I realized the green spray seems to keep the ants at bay.
Breakfast
The breakfast is scrambled eggs poured out of a cardboard milk carton and various soda products. The juice machine has not put out anything except orange tinted water for days, but I’ve seen them poking around with the cardboard boxes full of juice product. They have waffle irons, but there’s usually a line of five or six 10-​yearolds burning 3 waffles at a time. Anything else has been picked clean by 8am.
Social Hour
I witnessed «social hour» the day I checked in. This looked like a bunch of people not being social, drinking the hotels finest franzia out of dixie cups and trying to get their phones on the wifi.
Parking
It costs money. Also, good luck. The spaces are too short for an average sized compact car, not to mention the abundance of full size extended cab trucks that stick 10 feet out into the street. It’s a one way loop around the hotel, but theres no signage except in one little place, so you can get pinned in when someone drives the wrong way. There’s rarely parking available late at night.
General
The rooms are musty smelling and dark, if you are on the first floor, you can let some light in at the expense of being visible to everyone that walks by through the weirdly labyrinthine walkways/​corridors.
The front desk staff seems uninterested in appeasing the complaints of customers.
There are LOTS of kids running around being obnoxious in the early hours of the morning, maybe this is a cheap stop over on the way to disney land?
Pay the extra few bucks and stay somewhere, anywhere else.

I have stayed at my fair share of residence inns and this one doesn’t quite meet expectations.

I was able to (barely) find parking just outside the building on the street. I first arrived in the afternoon and the streets were wide open with parking, but it looks like usually the parking is taken up by students by nightfall and we luckily got the last open spot.
Cons:
Bath tub looked old and dirty. I’m not a huge germaphobe, but it looked gross enough that I felt like I wished I had brought flip flops to shower in.
Our TV kept turning itself off due to a bad connection (?). The staff did very promptly come to look at it when we called it in, but they ultimately were not able to fix it so the TV just kept turning off randomly and refusing to turn back on until we reset it. Very annoying.
When we first arrived in the afternoon, upon turning on the AC, the room started to smell like cigarette smoke. This stopped though when we came back at night and turned it back on again.
