The Westin Monache Resort, Mammoth

We have stayed here quite a few times. This time, I’ve had it. Service at Whitebark restaurant is the pits. Service is slow, slow, slow! Food is just okay. Don’t expect hot food to be hot. I would call for my car, when I’d get down to pick it up, there was no one there to give me my key. Same when I’d return the car. What a hassle. I I don’t mind waiting a bit but more than 5 minutes for some one to give you a key is ridiculous. Last time we stayed at a Westin they had old info on us. We updated it. Then we check in, here in Mammoth, our updated info is not locating us. She wants a old address from a home we sold 6 years ago, even though she had finally located us, she wanted to be sure we were us. We have a premium room, which has a lousy view compared with the premium room we had last time we stayed. We requested a 7:15 — 7:30. am breakfast delivery. 2 people, large carafe of coffee, bagel and cream cheese and, the yogurt, granola and berry parfait. Mind you, a large carafe of coffee. Bagel, parfait were fine; however we had 2 little sugar packs, and 4 little containers of half and half, and ONE napkin. Had we called for more condiments, by the time they would get here, coffee would be cold. We made due. This is a 4 star hotel, so Unilocal says, NOT! I can understand a few 3 star reviews but this place has too many 1 and 2 star reviews. Shame on you Westin, fix it!

My family and I stayed at this hotel last weekend and were pleasantly surprised multiple times throughout our stay! From the valet to the concierge and the hostess in the restaurant everyone seemed to go above and beyond and seemed so genuine, observant and proud of the hotel and area. Andrew helped us to our room on the first evening and really did a great job setting the tone for our stay… thank you sir! The room was nice, pillows and bed comfy… everything seemed to be just right! We will definitely be back next time we’re in the area! Great job and thanks again!

This is a beautiful newer family hotel with nice amenities. The lobby is lovely and the restaurant is very nice but a little pricey. Dinner ran about $ 160.00 for three, with tip, no drinks. Breakfast was about $ 25.00 for one person. The beds are good and the rooms very well appointed with thirsty towels and nice robes. The kitchen in our small suite was better stocked than any other that we have stayed in. It had everything including refer, dishwasher, toaster, micro, dishes, silverware, cutlery, pots, pans and even salt and pepper. The housekeepers at this hotel are the best in that they pay attention to every detail and do a great job leaving the rooms absolutely spotless. The wifi was good as well. They have a covered parking structure which is great for the weather in this area.
Our only complaint was that the hotel management had made the baffling decision to allow construction to commence shortly after 7:00 am on both Friday and Saturday mornings. I am not talking about a little carpet repair in the lobby, no, they were using large rumbling trucks, complete with backup alarms, and a large crew of hard working folks working to place gravel into the planters directly in front of the semi-​parabolic shaped entry courtyard that has seven floors of fairly expensive guest rooms. The shape of the hotel entry courtyard is such that even several floors up you can clearly hear conversations from people walking below. The rasp of shovels moving granite rubble from the backs of the metal trucks into the planters was very loud. The workmen seemed to be doing their best to be as quiet as they could manage but shoveling rock in what is essentially an amphitheater results in loud noises way to early in the morning. This was a poor management decision that kind of ruined the relaxing vibe that we were going for when we booked this suite in this hotel.
The place is otherwise very nice with friendly employees and a great locations.

Great relaxing place to stay in the area. Good service. Nice comfortable rooms with views, fireplace, and large bath tubs. Perfect woods/​snow get away.

For now, just a comment on Room Service. Breakfast was abysmal: Cold food, not served with cups or silverware because you are supposed to KNOW to use the utensils in the kitchenette. Plasticware would have been more sturdy than the tin-​can metal strips they call flatware. Hollandaise was cold, runny and separated. Just not good.
Second day: Elevation sickness. Called to get lunch at 2:15pm and they said Room Service is closed. I don’t know what’s more upsetting… Being told that Room Service is closed when it clearly states that All Day Dining is 11am-​11pm, or that the Room Service menu is a multi-​page, two-​sided copy paper that’s stapled and dog-​eared.
Guess we will wait two hours to eat.
$ 4.00 trip charge plus 20% service is palatable only when there is hot, delicious food. Unacceptable F&B program. FAIL.

And this is why we’re loyal Starwood members. The Monache experience is what Starwood is all about. From the staff to the ambiance and overall experience, my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay last week for a spring skiing 16^th anniversary celebration. We will be back!

The room we got was awesome, a really good view, cosy fireplace. Very nice overall. I would recommend it to all ski lovers ;)

This is probably as good as it gets in Mammoth. Hubs and I used to stay here when the rooms weren’t outrageously expensive (believe it or not, they used to have rooms for $ 250 – 300 during the week). Believe me, I would stay here any day of the week for $ 250. But the high price they are charging now… hmm I’d rather go on an extended ski trip to Jackson Hole or Whislter. No thanks.
Parking: Underground. Perfect because even if it snows, you don’t need to get snow off your car or shovel.
Pool/​Spa: It’s pretty awesome. So nice to hang out in the jacuzzi after a long day of skiing.
Room: Bed is incredibly comfortable, super nice bathroom with plush towels, kitchen is great, and love the fireplace!
Location: Very convenient. You take the long stairs down and you can catch the Village Gondola which takes you swiftly to Canyon Lodge. It’s *almost* ski in/​out. Doesn’t get any better, right? Well, you read take the stairs «down» — that means you’re taking the stairs «up» on your way back to the hotel! These stairs are killer at 6,000 ft, espeically at the end of the day…
Restaurant: Meh. I’d pass. Quick trip to Vons and I can whip up something better in the room.
So yeah, if you want the best, stay at Westin. But you’ll also pay the premium.

Have a love-​hate relationship with this place. Stayed here many times over the years – it is terribly convenient. Walking across the street to The Village and easily accessing the gondola to Canyon lodge. Hotel is generally clean, beds are awesome, showers are great. Built in kitchens are tiny but usable. Refrigerators are almost too small to be of any use. They finally fixed the wi-​fi which now appears to work without glitches. Furniture and TVs are great. Pool and gym are nice features.
Hotel is very popular with families, which cuts both ways. Lots of little kids running down the halls screaming, but it is very convenient for families learning to ski.
But guest service is pretty awful. Mammoth has always had a «mañana» attitude among the transient local population. Kids who come here to work during ski season are really here to ski first, work second, out of necessity. But this is reflected in the desk staff, valets, bellmen, etc. They’re friendly, but not well trained and not focused on service. Waiting 20 minutes for a car to be brought around. Reservations screwed up. Spent half my afternoon packing up my room to switch rooms because they didn’t keep me to a single room for a simple three night stay. So disruptive and inconvenient, no discount offered. Kind of wrecked my weekend. I think I’m done with this place.

This is our second stay at the Westin. My husband and I love it because it’s convenient to the village, the gondola and allows dogs.
The rooms are small so we get two bedrooms but it’s expensive. The fridge is a mini and the stove is for small pans. I couldn’t do a proper bacon and eggs and pancakes breakfast but it’s vacation so nobody complained.
Sheets both times don’t fit the mattresses so it’s a tangled mess each night.
Décor is nice ikea modern and it’s clean throughout the grounds.
We will be back.

It would get 4 stars if it were a Marriott or similar at a price commensurate with the quality of the place, but it’s not.
Those stairs SUCK! How is there not an escalator or conveyor belt to help get up those stairs from the Village???
Way too expensive for what you get.

Every time I’ve stayed at this Westin (ok, any Westin), I’ve felt like a queen. Everyone who works here are accommodating: super friendly, bends over backwards, to make me feel like royalty.
With any complaint or concern I have, it is fixed urgently and with ease.
An AMAZING location with the village down below, with the gondola ride to canyon lodge, it’s the next best thing to actually staying at the village or on the mountain.
This Westin has a beautiful fitness room and an outdoor pool (heated) with a couple spas. It also has one restaurant, the Whitebark, which is delicious for breakfast… but I’d pass on lunch or dinner there. It’s just ok.
My favorite is the shuttle/​driver service. Just tell the front desk/​bell hop where you want to go, and they’ll take you. Sure worth to tip them than to drive yourself through heavy snow.
I’m already planning my next stay there this winter. Thank you, Westin, for being so great!

Garlic fries and shishito peppers are a must have!
Calimari was just OK probably would skip it next time.
My friends enjoyed the fried Brussel hearts.
Friendly service at the bar but they could use more staff for quicker service.

It’s like a mini apartment. Whoa.
It was a great stay & the place was huge! We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite & the living room sofa was a convertible queen size bed. So that was 6 people in one quite. It was roomy & had such a great view. The kitchen was the perfect size & was such a treat to have since all we did was cook our meals for the weekend trip! Bulogi bowls, breakfast omelets, bagel sandwiches, chili, pastas & so much food! The kitchen was great but we were missing a cutting board, luckily our friends had 3 in their room. Score! The resort is clean, homey & close to the Village. It is walking distance! Those stairs to come back though, huff and puff, that altitude totally makes it harder to get up that mountain. The gym is small but very clean and perfect for some cardio. The pool & jacuzzi are large and accommodate big groups of friends and strangers! Definitely a great experience. The best part is the staff. They are so nice & attentive to your housekeeping needs. Great customer service all around!

Great location, great view from room, bed was Heavenly.
We loved the room and the views. Taco Tuesday was delicious in the restaurant.
Unfortunately it didn’t receive five stars because I feel the $ 25 resort fee is a joke. We parked the car ourselves, the gym is small, and there wasn’t anyone on staff at the pool.
Staff was scarce at times. Needs more staff up front for sure. Line at check in and check out with only one person.
Would definitely stay here again as the location is perfect and close to everything. We didn’t have our dogs with us but clearly they are extremely pet friendly as is everything near Mammoth including Bodie, Rainbow Falls even the Gondola to the top.
Great summer family trip!

One of the best Westin beds I’ve experienced so far, our dog loved it too! Great location for hiking, centrally located and spacious.
A few issues, not enough staff, so things are a bit slow. The bathroom was tiny, not oversized as we expected. The furniture could use an update and we would really love a balcony.
Since this is s dog friendly hotel, would be nice to have a terrace to enjoy with out dog. There is only one restaurant and it’s not dog friendly, no real bar either.

There are several issues you must be made aware of if you are considering staying at this hotel.
A wedding (not mine) led us to The Westin Monache Resort. After a very long drive, we could not wait to arrive to have a drink, relax, and then hit the town. We pulled up to have our vehicle parked and discovered the valet situation was horrible; except for an older valet gentleman.
Upon arrival, I pulled to the front valet and waited… and waited… and waited. An individual, who I could see sitting just inside the entryway of the lobby, exited. He approached, asked if we were checking in, and asked whether we wanted valet. I said yes to both. It was clear this individual was either on a break or hiding out.
An older valet gentleman then approached, and he was very friendly. I exited my vehicle, grabbed my luggage, and the younger valet took possession of the vehicle. As we walked away, so did the younger valet. The only issue was the fact my vehicle was still running. After standing at the hotel entrance for several moments and glaring at my vehicle, I asked the younger valet if he was going to park my car. He finally drove the vehicle and parked it.
Upon checkin, the clerk was friendly and gave us our room keys. To my surprise, our room was located on the second floor. We had requested and paid for a mountain view room. We had difficultly getting the room keys to work, but one finally did… for the time being. The room was well-​appointed, clean, and it had a fireplace. The foundation of the room was slanted, which took some getting used to. We had a great (not) view of a table where people were eating by the pool; not the mountain view.
We called the front desk to request a higher floor. We were placed on hold for several minutes. Finally, the employee returned to the phone, and they claimed there were no other rooms and offered us a room on the 1^st Floor. Now why would the employee offer a room on a floor below the one we were on when we requested a higher floor. This was extremely irritating and insulting. It was clear we were being told that we were lucky to have a room on the 2^nd Floor.
We were ready to temporarily leave the hotel, but we had to contend with the valet situation again. We waited… and waited… and waited and finally parked our vehicle ourselves.
Now back to the room key situation. Upon our return back to the hotel, both room keys did not work, so back to the front desk we went and waited and waited to be helped. The keys were reprogrammed, and we were advised not to keep the keys next to magnetic items. Really? Is this our first time using electronic card keys? No!
The pool situation was not much better. The hotel had one employee taking food and drink orders for the entire pool area. In addition, the employee did not have the items and equipment necessary to adequately serve the guests. I offered the employee encouragement.
The checkout was even more irritating. I called the front desk to checkout and ensure I was granted my Westin points for utilizing the «green» program. The person who answered the telephone said the front desk was too busy to take our call; never heard of such a thing.
In closing, the issues described above are a paramount failure on management. I have had the pleasure of staying at other Westin properties in the past, but this experience was poor.

Freakin gorgeous hotel! There are two hot tubs and a huge pool. There is a doggeh run area that is fenced in. And the resort fee covers your parking. The down side to that is that there is tons of free street parking and the resort fee is pretty useless. I asked the desk attendant what it covers exactly and he said they have free coffee in the lobby until 11. Great. So this black brewed coffee that’s been sitting out all morning costs me 25 dollars when I could get a fresh hot cappuccino for 3 in the village? Bizarre. Whatever. You’re not going to like it and you’re not going to get out of it. It’s just a sneaky thing they do to increase your price… Which is already pretty inflated.
In the end it is a typical Westin. But it is literally in the heart of Mammoth Village so it’s got some good location going for it!

I was thoroughly impressed with this place. We had an amazing weekend stay here at the end of January 2015.
Service/​Amenities: excellent. Everyone was so accommodating and friendly. The Westin has an airport service and will pick you up from the airport and take you back for free. They also have an in-​town shuttle where they will take you to wherever you need to go and back – also free. Everything was incredibly convenient! They have a Mammoth resort operated rental and lift ticket store in the hotel as well so you don’t have to deal with it when you get up to the resort. The gondola to the resort is right across the street.
There is hot chocolate in the afternoons which is perfect for after the snow in the lobby. They have an outdoor heated pool with two hot tubs – it is nice to be dipped in a jacuzzi with snow around you!
They also have a gym that’s open 24h and the hot tubs are open till 10pm.
They have towels by the pool area which is nice.
The Room: Super nice! The bed was comfy. The room came with a full kitchen and a nice bathroom. There was a window seat with a nice view.
Bonus: They allow dogs! We missed our dog so much that weekend because there were so many adorable doggies enjoying their snow vacation!
Overall, everything was soooo convenient and nice. We could walk to the Village and gondolas (free to Canyon Lodge) and anything we couldn’t walk to, the Westin drove us to. We absolutely loved it and would stay there again!

Gutes Hotel in Mammoth direkt am Lift. Waren im Sommer auf Durchreise und kein Mensch war im Hotel. Warum denn auch, denn es ist ein Winterhotel. Die Raten waren allerdings wie in einem Motel, daher mußte man einfach hier übernachten.
Es ist ein sehr gepflegtes Haus und alles perfekt in Schuß. Gerne wieder, wenn ich in der Gegend sein sollte und die Rate stimmt.

Excelente sitio, hotel espectacular, muy buenos acabados, habitaciones con camas amplias y muy cómodas, la piscina de lujo. El restaurante ofrece variedad de comida y licores, todo el personal es muy atento y respetuoso.
No dudaría en volver al hotel y al pueblo como tal, espectacular!
