I took my car in to have a fuel pump replaced. After three tries the car continued to die. One of times fuel was pouring out of the car. When I finally took it to the dealer, they found multiple places where things had been broken through improper removal or improperly installed. Tunnex is claiming no responsibilty. Stay away from this place!

My family has been taking cars to Tunex for as long as I can remember because they are both honest and thorough – both of which are important, as I re-​discovered this week. My car’s check engine light came on last week and I drove it to a mechanic close to my house to see what the problem was. I was told that there were two codes showing up, and that the repairs those codes called for would cost me $ 1000. Because my car is old and not worth a lot, I resigned myself to the idea that it was finally time to buy a new car – I couldn’t have the old car dying on me during a cold Utah winter.
My mom suggested I at least make the 30 minute drive to the Midvale/​Sandy Tunex to see if they agreed about the expensive repairs. Tunex got the same codes from the car’s computer (verifying the previous mechanic’s honesty), but they noted that the car shouldn’t be running if those parts of the car weren’t functioning, and that it was very rare for a Corolla to ever show those particular engine codes. They could have just recommended the expensive repairs based on what the car’s computer told them (as the previous mechanics had done) and made a lot of money off me, but instead they spent hours trying to see if they could verify that the codes were correct, and in the end concluded that the car’s computer had likely made a mistake. They cleared out the check engine light and sent me on my way without charging me a penny for the hours and hours of diagnostics they’d run on the car. When I tried to insist on paying them something, I was told they wouldn’t accept payment if they couldn’t give a conclusive diagnosis on a car.
I drove the car away, and sure enough – the check engine light isn’t coming back on.
There’s a reason this place is always really busy. Get your car in early.

My car battery had been giving me grief for the past couple of weeks. A handful of jump starts and a can of coke later, I decided it’s time to get it replaced. I got a free checkup done at Autozone and I was informed that it’s not the battery but instead the alternator that needed to be replaced. I found that to be a bit strange given that I had just done a hokey alternator test before going there and it appeared to be working fine.
I’ve only taken my car to one independent mechanic in Salt Lake City. As it turned out, it was one of those days when he wasn’t available. But there are only so many times you can ask random stranger at a car wash, random stranger in apartment parking lot, co-​worker in office parking lot, and so on, to help jump start your car! Convenience had to rule. Since I had heard good things about Tunex before, I decided to take my car to them.
They did a more thorough check and figured it was indeed a junk battery. I was quoted a very reasonable price for a new battery and labor. The manager and mechanic were friendly and they knew what they were talking and doing. Fifteen minutes later, I was out of there and a week on since the replacement, the car has been rolling along just fine.
