WONC 89.1 FM

WONC 89.1 is North Central College’s radio station. It’s a really great station depending on which student is playing the music that week (I think they just select the music based on their taste). It’s mostly indie rock and alternative music, but occasionally they will play some throwbacks like Springsteen or The Clash. I listen to this radio station a lot because I enjoy discovering new alternative bands and unlike other radio stations that play the same music over and over again, 89.1 doesn’t do that. Their music selection varies every day.

I first started listening to 89.1 about 9 years ago while I was in high school. I remember listening to it in my room while I got ready for school in the morning and in my and my friends’ cars when we started driving. It’s a really great little local college station! They play a variety of rock throughout the day and also have some shows dedicated to certain genres such as punk, metal, Christian rock, local bands, etc. They broadcast some sports and other specialty programming too. I think all the DJs are students which is cool, they take requests, and it’s commercial-​free which is very nice. They have a lot of songs that never get played on other stations, whether it’s just a random older song or a great but little-​known song. I just love this station!

North Central College’s radio station. Huge playlist, mainstream to the most obscure, and they keep adding to from all the CDs they get in the mail. The DJs aren’t the smoothest, but that means this isn’t Clearchannel or Infinity Broadcasting. If you can’t get it in your car, check out the website — live streaming. Local fitness guru Nicki Anderson does a show on wellness, as do a few other local celebs.
Tuned in this morning and there was some live-​sounding church broadcast. I’m not religious, so I’ll chalk it up to appealing to a diverse crowd of college students.
