Specialties
We specialize in the medical, dental, and mental health needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities and people living with HIV/AIDS. We offer comprehensive, state-of-the-art services in a sensitive, non-judgmental environment where patients receive personalized attention and care. We also offer mobile medical outreach for homeless youth and other patients who are unable to visit our facility.
History
Established in 1969.
Callen-Lorde’s grassroots heritage dates back over 40 years to the St. Mark’s Community Clinic, founded in 1969 to provide screening and treatment for sexually-transmitted infections. In 1983, St. Mark’s merged with the Gay Men’s Health Project to form Community Health Project, a mostly volunteer-staffed episodic care program housing the nation’s first community-based HIV clinic.
In 1998, Community Health Project changed its name to Callen-Lorde Community Health Center and moved into a modern, state-of-the-art facility in Manhattan’s Chelsea district. Over the last decade Callen-Lorde has continued to add new programs, including a dental clinic, mental health services, and an on-site pharmacy – and remains the New York metropolitan area’s only facility targeting the healthcare needs of the LGBT communities and people living with HIV/AIDS.
