Its such a shame that this place closed, it was far and away the best place to get your haircut in NY. It was affordable, friendly, and all the stylists took their time with you and made sure that you were happy with the cut they were giving you.
However there is a bit of a silver lining here, a new hair place called Hair Queen has sprung up in Dickson’s spot at 137 Allen Street. I went there on a whim yesterday and was very pleased with the result, largely in part to the fact that the owner of this new business was smart enough to hire Veronika after Dickson closed. While the name «Hair Queen» doesn’t quite evoke the olde timey classiness of the name «Dickson Hairshop», its still a top notch establishment and worth a look if you are trying to fill the void that Dickson left behind.

Went there a few months ago to get my medium length hair cut short. I showed Veronica a picture of what I wanted, which was short but not a pixie cut. She said my hair would totally do that, and then proceeded to chop it into a pixie cut. If I had reviewed them immediately after it would’ve been 1 – 2 stars. However, I got so many compliments that I changed my mind and decided to keep the pixie.
I called on Monday (four days ago) to make an appointment and got their voicemail. It did say they were still open, so I left a message. I still haven’t heard back, so not sure if they’re officially closed now or if they’re just too busy to respond to messages requesting an appointment.
Regardless, I called another salon and made an appointment for tomorrow. If they are still open I would recommend they return phone calls for people wanting to give them business.

This is the only place I’ve ever actually been happy getting my hair cut. The rumors are not true, they’re still open and running. I just got my hair cut by Veronica this last Friday. (⁷⁄₂₅)

Great place for haircut. Very adequately priced

I came here because I didn’t like spending 100 bucks on a cut at tommy guns. After reading all these reviews I figured it must be a really awesome place that’s affordable. So I make my appointment and here I am. It’s a small cozy place and after exchanging some brief pleasantries the gentleman about to cut hair makes some suggestions and we begin our journey.
I stick to an overgrown buzz cut. Short and cropped on the sides and tussled and played around with on top. Nothing fancy.
I didn’t expect there to be any clippers though. Buzzed on the sides and a few snipes off the top. And there you go. In and out in under twenty minutes.
Really disappointed. The guy cutting my hair was nice enough but this experience was awfully disappointing to me. I don’t think I’ll return. I felt there wasn’t any attention to detail. Almost a fast food type conveyor belt experience. You get what you pay for in most cases. I generally hold off giving a middle of the road review to a place unless I’ve been there twice. Im definitely not doing this a second time. So while this place might be great for a lot of people, it isn’t for me.

I’ve been meaning to write this for a while, but I can’t say enough great things about Dixon’s, especially Veronica! I moved to NYC about 3 months ago and was looking for a decent place to get a haircut, that wasn’t over the top expensive. I did some googeling and came across Dixon’s and couldn’t be happier. Veronica is great, listens to what you need, and is open to taking her time with your haircut, even if that means staying late. Great on reservations as well. A nice, non-​pretentious place to have a chat, get a good cut, and be on your way. Definitely take Dixon’s into consideration. $ 45 for a men’s cut in NYC is not bad at all.

This is a long overdue review, but I thought I should give Dickson the review it deserves because I really love their hairshop. It’s a VERY tiny (like you might hit a hairdresser while opening the front door) shop, but everyone there is really down to earth & knows a thing or two about cutting hair.
I got my hair cut with Shane for about a year – he was entirely unpretentious, sweet, thoughtful, and *KNEW* hair. But – sadly – unless he decided to stay or return… as of late 2013 he has left to move back to the West Coast (I haven’t been since October ’13). In a weird way though since he left I thought it was time to ‘break up’ with Dickson and find a new shop closer to my apartment. That being said, everyone here is equally as talented and thoughtful and deserves your dolla dolla bills.

Jason has cut my hair for about a year now after I had one too many close shaves at Freeman’s (when all I wanted was a trim). He’s a great guy and barber/​stylist, and for 45 bucks, one of the best deals in town. For the first time in my life, I just schedule my haircuts every 6 weeks like clockwork, and I look forward to seeing and talking to him. Good guy, and he can handle the curly hair!

Went to Dickson Hairshop for the first time last Friday; I’d seen the awesome online reviews and wasn’t so impressed by the last cut I got at my previous barber so thought it was time to check it out.
You’re going to need an appointment for this place, and be prepared to wait a few days, as they seem to get pretty booked up. This is a good thing.
Veronica cut my hair. She is clearly a technically gifted stylist and has meticulous attention to detail. I totally recommend her.
The pricing is great value for the quality of cut you’re going to get and there’s the offer of follow up ‘clean ups’ at a very reasonably price.
Have already recommended twice to friends who asked. Only fair to share the love on here too…

Shane is super awesome and sweet. I loooove my new pixie cut.
it was $ 75 because I went from long to very short, but Shane offers free trims between cuts and if I stay with this cut (which I will) it is only $ 45.

Shane is the best, and the only person in NYC I want cutting my hair. I’m AWFUL at describing what I want, I get anxious about getting haircuts, and yet Shane still nails it EVERY TIME. I don’t know, I don’t ask questions. I just go in, mumble a couple of suggestions, and Shane makes my hair look good. Every time.
Perhaps as important as Shane’s skill and psychic ability: he is a legit NICE dude. No pretense, no BS. You don’t have to worry about any holier than thou/​too cool for school crap at all. In fact, everybody at Dickson is really nice and down to earth. Good people.
Price-​wise, I guess it’s a little expensive, but you get what you pay for: a great cut from talented, nice people.
For a LONG time, I would bounce around from shop to shop, trying to find «my» place. Now, Dickson is the only place I’ll go.

I made a spur of the moment appointment about a month ago, and they were able to squeeze me in on a weekday.
I went to Dickson Hairshop with a terrible haircut (I had an experimental undercut from a different barber.) and Harix was able to turn my bad hair cut in to exactly what I wanted. He asked me some basic qualifying questions and paid extreme attention to detail. He told me exactly what he was doing the whole time just to make sure I was comfortable with it.
Sure, you can get a hair cut for 10 dollars in chinatown, but to be honest the barbers/​stylist there absolutely do not know what they’re doing. Why save 30 dollars and hate how your hair looks for the next 3 months? If you can pay 80 dollars for a gym membership every month then you you sure as hell can invest a little more in to your hair.

I have gotten my last three haircuts here after trying out some places in Soho and Chinatown. Most stylists in Soho were a little too expensive to be going back on a monthly basis; and although Chinatown is dirt cheap, I also always walked out with a haircut that I did not want. When looking for a place to get a haircut, I don’t believe in paying such high prices but I also need someone consistent. At Dickson Hairshop, it’s both affordable and my hair comes out consistently good.
I went with Shane since he got several good reviews on Unilocal.I can only reiterate the same things that have been said before. He listens to what I want and also gives suggestions on what he thinks might look good and lets me decide. I’ve also have had some great conversations with him. I know going in that I don’t have to worry about what I’m going to look like coming out.
I definitely would recommend this place, especially Shane.

My friend highly recommended Jason, but I was sloppy and didn’t bother asking. Ended up with the bald guy with the big circle earrings, instead. He was nice, but a bit impatient and I don’t think he understands hair that are straight permed, which I specifically told him I have…
I walked out with an okay haircut (too short… humph) and $ 75 less. Could have gotten the same job for $ 40 in Ctown. Oh well. It’s just hair. Been a month now and things are slowly beginning to look kind of good.

So many have already said it all — I just want to add that Shane is a dream, super nice and super talented. I went here because it’s one of the only places that charges a different price for girls with short hair — usually you have to pay over $ 60 for a pixie cut, here it’s $ 45. Plus often Shane only charges me a trim price of $ 20 since there isn’t a lot to do with my hair. So reasonable.
Nothing but good experiences!
Just watch out for cash only, and absolutely NO room in the shop to wait, so just get there right on time or chill outside with a cigarette.

2^nd time in a row with a great haircut. Jason was so easy to talk to. I wanted to try a short enough haircut for a fohawk. He had left it just a bit longer than fohawk ideal, (but still feasible) just to check in on my comfort with the length.
I actually didn’t want to go any shorter during this visit, and he happily left it the length he cut. So considerate. Thank you so much for respecting my choice and asking me first.
I think next time I will go shorter.

I am appalled at the poor service of this place. I found this place for my boyfriend. I sent him to get a hair cut and he ended up getting an awful military-​type haircut. It was thick down the middle and buzzed on the sides. It looked really bad and when he got home he was really unhappy so he decided to call to see if he could come back in the next day. Turns out they couldn’t take him until two days later. HUH? If a customer is unhappy you should let them come back to fix it immediately. Not only did they try to make him wait, but they were rude about it. Awful. He ended up going somewhere else. We wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.
Also, I find it extremely odd that their page is full of 5 star reviews but if you go to the filtered review page, you find a bunch of 1 and 2 stars reviews. Very fishy.

I got my haircut here a few months ago. I loved my cut, it was really stylish. But when I got home, I noticed the layers weren’t cut with precision. Although it wasn’t perfect I was happy with the cut. And I think any folks in their twenty’s who wants a stylish cut here will be satisfied.
But since I’m in my thirties, I do realize that I want a stylish precision cut for what I’m paying. Steph was great, she was nice, but perhaps after a few years she’d be even better.
Just yesterday, I went to a Japanese stylist and she noticed immediately that my layers were off. And the old tale rings true, American’s just don’t know how to cut Asian hair.
I enjoyed it while it lasted but a better cut would have lasted even longer. It was an okay experience.

if you’re looking for a high end salon that blasts house music while you’re getting your hair cut and styled, Dickson Hairshop is NOT for you. But if you’re looking for a low key spot with stylists that listen, contribute advice and know how to cut hair, look no further.
Since there are only two seats in the shop its in your best interest to call ahead and set up an appointment. I called a day ahead and set one up with Jason.
I had no idea what to do with my hair. I didnt bring pictures. Nothing. Theres not much you can do with my hair since its in the weird, in between stage. its not short and its not long. its curlier/​wavy in some spots and straight in others. Before getting my hair washed Jason and I had a conversation about what I might want to do. We traded ideas, spoke about what worked and what didnt and I left it up to him. I’m glad I did. I am super happy with how my hair came out.

and apparently they give a shot of whiskey (i did see the shot glasses) out before your haircut. although I didnt get one, its something else to look forward to during my next visit. ;)
