Mike Manning is the founder and creator of Manning Custom Woodwinds. As a lifelong woodwind player and technician he has explored the inside and outside of an unimaginable number of instruments. It with these years of expertise that he has created one of the world’s finest full service repair shop. From complete overhauls, custom horns and minor repairs to case services, mouthpieces and a wide assortment of quality accessories like neck-​straps, clarinet barrels and neck bags it is no wonder that many woodwind players consider Manning Custom as their first and only stop for all of their instrument needs. The Manning Custom Case is unparalleled for the professional musician. I have toured across the US and Canada playing hundreds of gigs on bari and tenor sax; loading in and out of arenas, sheds, festivals, clubs; on tour buses, vans, every size of commercial aircraft and even boats; in blazing hot weather and snow and hailstorms; and with my horns being handled by crew grunts and roadies and TV guys and their toadies. My saxophones have been safely nestled in their form fitted Manning cases through all of it and always arrive in perfect playing condition. If you are a traveling baritone sax player, you must do whatever it takes to get your horn to New York City and have Mike build you a case. Since my bari has been in its Manning case, I have brought it onto commercial flights as CARRY-​ON luggage 95% of the time, with minimum flak from ground crew and airline attendants. You bari players know what I’m talking about.

Manning is an evil conniver. He tried to rip someone off by attempting to sell them a Selmer accessory that was not made by that company; it was roughly patched to pretend to be a Selmer part.
He is dishonest and terrible. Do not go to him.

Mike is an important part of the NY scene. Not only is he a great repairman, but he’s a restless innovator, always looking carefully at the intricacies of how things work and searching for how he might make subtle improvements that impact players’ lives. Consider his cases, neck straps, and handmade ligatures as just a few examples. I have all of these, and they’ve improved my ability to play with confidence and travel with ease. An excellent clarinetist himself, Mike’s work on clarinets and bass clarinets is stellar. And he’s reliably matter-​of-​fact in his assessments of things, a comforting anchor in the generally stressful world of music performance. He stands behind his work with unassailable integrity, as well, a testament to his confidence and his character.

I’ve been using Manning Custom both for my horn repairs and custom cases for about the last ten years. I’m convinced that he’s the best repairman in NYC and his cases are by far the best available on the market. I feel like Manning really understands the needs and rigors of professional saxophone playing and it comes through in his work.
