NY Waterway Ferry Terminal Midtown

Shitty service again today. Seriously something needs to be done with buses being more on time and not saying «oh its traffic» when in fact the driver doesnt leave on time for the PM schedule.
Then the driver refuses to hold a boat because they dont want to. Such a great service for a shitty price.

Something is very wrong with most of the boats — they seem to be pumping their diesel (?) exhaust directly into the cabin. It’s disgusting and must be toxic.
The manhattan buses — oh where to begin.
– I have never once been in one with a driver who wasn’t trying to get himself and all of us killed.
– They drive at reckless speeds — countless times ive seen them nearly hit pedestrians and bikes.
– They SLAM! on the brakes for every stop — more than once I’ve seen people get thrown out of their seats, and once it smashed my face into the handle in front of me. Driver DGAF
– They force passengers to do dangerous things like dash across lanes of incoming traffic to get on or off.
– they re-​route the buses away from the designated route without warning. The dispatcher allegedly does this for traffic reasons, but that is a crock of shit — I have been in places where the traffic is that they are supposedly trying to avoid, and there is no bloody traffic. Lies, lies.
– There is no logic whatsoever to the timing of the buses /​how far apart they are spaced. None. Huge amounts of time will go by in which none are on the road — picking people up — at all.
You can’t charge as much these ferries do and suck this badly. You can’t.

Monopoly! $ 365/​month for my 1 mile commute downtown. Employees are rude (most, not all). Bus service is laughable. They arrive at the port imperial station at 8:01, just in time to see your 8:00 ferry go bye bye. Next ferry 8:30. When I complained my response was ‘you’re complaining about One minute’. Uhm yah. And good luck ever getting them to hold the boat for your late bus by even 30 seconds… they don’t give a F. You could be in labor and they’d be like ‘eh, she’ll be fine’. 10 below out, sucks to be you. Expired ticket, forget about it. This is a quasi government, monopolistic, rude, expensive service. There is no alternative commute from the Weehawken waterfront. If you work in Midtown it’s slightly better & you could take a bus to port authority. If you work downtown, my advice is to live near a path station or in the city. NY Waterway will squeeze you dry.

This place always, always smells like popcorn. Always. It’s a small machine, but the smell really does travel. If you weren’t hungry before, you might be now.
Popcorn or not, this ferry terminal is an integral part of my daily commute to work and when compared to my old commute on the PATH… it wins in every possible way.
It’s the little things — like a bathroom! …and water fountains! …and seats! If you miss your boat, it’s not a big deal (unless it’s the last one).
If you miss the train, you probably have no idea when the next one is coming. There might be a track condition, or a sick passenger, or train traffic, or tunnel maintenance, or train painting, or train car disinfectation (yes, disinfectation) or overhead track preventative lightbulb maintenance.
The boat runs on time, crashes into the wall, and heads right back where it came from. No river maintenance has ever delayed me. Sure, it’s been late, but 5 minutes here and there isn’t a big deal.
The busses that live here are also very important — my 34^th street ride is always, always waiting for me when I get off the boat at 8:37am, and saves me a bunch of time getting to my office. There is always a guy with a walkie-​talkie in the AM directing the drivers so they run as efficiently as possible. I approve.
When it’s warm out, there is A/​C. When it’s cold, there is heat. When you want a beer, there is a bar. When you want popcorn, oh trust me, they definitely have that.
The only slightly negative thing… the location of this terminal seems to be a void for cell service. Calls are fine, but data is slow. Then again, if I was on the train… I probably wouldn’t have service at all, so this is still a win.

This review is long overdue. As someone just visiting New York this weeklong ferry pass was the way to go. The cost was $ 72 for unlimited rides across from West New York (Jersey side) to Manhattan. Since the reason my daughter I were visiting was to see the Manhattan side, it was great to be able to go back and forth at will. We decided to stay in an AirBnB on the Jersey side for a little more feeling of home, quieter and more peaceful in the area we stayed in. Plus we got a perfect view of the Manhattan skyline.
The ferry stops along a bunch of ports. We needed just the one, which was perfect. This was also the weekend of the New York Comic Con, so there were a lot of visitors to the convention center this weekend who were riding the ferry. Loved people watching and seeing all the cosplayers!
Anyway, I have no complaints about the ferry, the service workers were very kind and helpful, fast and efficient to dock and move passengers on and off the ferry and kept a super duper tight schedule (every ferry was ON TIME!). We had a great time on EACH and EVERY ferry ride across the Hudson during our stay. Thank you New York Waterway!

I have been taking the ferry daily from port imperial to mid town for almost 2 years. Over my time as a customer, I have noticed a significant decrease in the overall operation. There have been new captains floating around who do not seem to be very well trained, excessively crashing into the docks almost every time. The biggest complaint is actually the bus system. It has gone to absolute hell, must be a new manager, hiring unqualified drivers to be politically correct. Most of these bus drivers should not be driving a car let a lone a passenger bus. I wonder if they even have commercial drivers licenses. Its truly a shame that such a fun way to commute to work in the city has started to demise. There needs to be some serious management changes or price adjustments to compensate for the horrendous downward spiral of this company.

This place is a life saver! I was doing a long run and I was a couple of miles from home, chugging north on the Hudson River Greenway when all of the sudden, my stomach says «Um, yeah, you’re going to need to find a restroom now. Like, stat!». As I slowed my pace to a clenched trot, I was looking desperately for a place to make a pit stop. Unfortunately, between 27^th St and 38^th St, the path is hard against the West Side Highway without even a bush on the side for some privacy. Then, like a mirage across the desert, I saw the Ferry terminal.
Casually walking as fast as I could, I located a large, clean bathroom and I was saved. I’ve taken a ferry here once and it was fine. But I have to say, my tears of stress turned to tears of joy upon visiting this place. It can never be less than five stars for me.

Hope you enjoy being humiliated by rude unionized employees for an amount of money equal to the monthly lease of a brand new Mercedes C300.

The ferry+crosstown bus (for the 50^th st bus) and the NJ Transit bus+subway take about the same time when it’s the best case scenario for either option when heading East to Lexington. If I’m feeling lazy and am not pressed for time, or if there’s something wonky going on with the Lincoln Tunnel, I’ll take the ferry. Getting to the terminal is half the battle so I usually opt for the NJT bus. The ferry IS more than 2x more expensive and it’s not like you’re that shielded from the wind or rain.
The buses and bus drivers all seem quirky. If you’re on them during rush hour it can be super crowded.
Also, most of the employees are really nice but I’ve encountered a rude one out of my many trips that dampered the experience.

I love the ferry!
I used to take the NJ Transit and hated Port Authority. The ferry is the way to go. The station is new and clean and the bus service is great (yes the buses need some updating but they take you from point a to point b). The ferry service is continuous and the last boat leaves at 12:10am on weekdays and 1:10am on weekends, which is perfect. Starting and ending the say on a boat is very cool.
Also, when I take the subway, I take the 7 to 34^th Hudson Yards and from there, there is the bus to the ferry station or I just walk a few blocks. Very convenient.

Nice quick scenic ride across the Hudson is absolutely ruined by the overcrowded standing room only buses on both sides of the Hudson. Ridiculous for the amount they charge. NJ Transit buses are less than half the price.

Edgewater Ferry didnt even show up this morning. No announcements and no apologies from the crew. The captain said. It’s not my problem… enough said. How do I post zero star rating?

While the Ferry is expensive, you kinda get what you pay for. You aren’t crammed like sardines in a PATH car and it doesn’t smell like BO and axe body spray.
Now, I don’t work in the city so I can’t comment on the buses, I will say they look a little run down. We usually just opt for a cab or walk from the terminal. The ferry is quick and almost always on time every time I take it. I can’t complain about that. It’s never so crowded that you can’t find a seat somewhere.
Now, if I had to take this every day for work it would be pretty cost prohibitive I imagine. And the limited routes kinda stink.
The terminal is clean and well kept. You can grab your ticket on their app or at the terminal.

Extremely over priced for the service you receive. Buses are extremely outdated, half don’t have air conditioning drivers are rude and most barely speak English. This form of transportation is way over priced and NYC and NJ should review them as this is unacceptable.

One of the best ways to get from NJ to NYC in the summer! Clean ships and terminals but the pier is always very bumpy and the price is $ 272 for a month pass. That’s very expensive!
The monthly pass is only for one location… Why is that? At $ 272, shouldn’t I be able to use the pass to go everywhere?
If you were wondering, YES, your cellphone will have service the entire time…

The commute from Lincoln harbor is great. However, Waiting for the bus to leave the terminal every morning is painful. I usually wait 5 –10 minutes for a bus to even pull up in the morning. Then when a bus shows up, you have to wait another 15 – 20 minutes for it to leave. Taking the ferry doubles my commute, not to mention that it is twice the price.

Been using this mode of transportation since Hurricane Sandy and haven’t looked back since. Reliable, on time, quickest and most beautiful way to travel from Jersey City to NYC. You can pay via e-​ticket app on your smart phone or purchase paper tickets. Check website for the schedules. Free shuttle bus to take you to and from the ferry. Convenient!!!

I remember the olden days of the ferry before ⁹⁄₁₁ when it was in a little bitty building that wasn’t even large enough to hold everyone waiting for their boats. And coming home from visiting the tree at Rockefeller center or watching a show you’d have to go out and shiver until the boat came.
Happy to see the ferry has grown to what it is today. It’s truly a wonderful, stress free way to get across the Hudson and now there’s plenty of room to wait inside until your ferry arrives! I miss the nostalgia of that little building but the current one is much more suited for the what is needed today. I ride from here to Weehawken, but there are other routes to Hoboken, Edgewater, etc.
Ferries operate right on schedule and the free busses to get you where you need are awesome. I have a lot of meetings in the city for work now and I always take the ferry. No worries about hunting for parking in midtown.

I am coming from midtown to Edgewater and usually take the bus. During rush hour the lines for the buses are very long so I tried taking the ferry to get back quicker.
It was not a good experience.
First, the bus to the ferry is not frequent and the line gets very long. When the bus finally comes, it’s often full but the driver still lets people in so we are crammed like sardines and not moving fast. Crossing town during rush hour is a nightmare too especially with a lot of people breathing on each other’s necks.
When the bus finally arrives to the ferry, it tends to arrive right after the boat I need leaves… So I wait 30 minutes for the next one. The few times I tried to save time and pay more to take the ferry, I added an extra 40 minutes to my normal trip.
On a more positive note — I learned that if you buy one ticket for a more expensive boat it can be used on a cheaper one if you needed to use it — I could take a more frequent boat to another town if I needed to… Although there is usually no point.
The actual boat ride is nice and quick. Getting to it is a nightmare. I will stick to the bus.

I am pretty relieved that I do not have to work in my NJ office anymore. The terminal itself is nice and clean though I wish it had more food stands. The free shuttle buses that take you to the ferry terminal are inefficient, always late, and seriously raises your blood pressure/​stress level when you’re trying to catch that ONE ferry that will get you to work on time. Then again, there’s really no way to improve the bus system since midtown traffic is unpredictable. If you have a relatively flexible schedule, this 8 minute ride is the fastest (and probably most expensive way) to take you to Weehawken/​Fort Lee.
Pro tip: You might want to consider taking the bus during the winter time instead; the Hudson freezes over and is covered with huge slabs of ice blocks like a scene straight out of the Titanic. Be prepared for potential delays, re-​routes, and cancellations.
