The Art Farm in the City is an eco-​friendly and organic facility that teaches your children about nature, animals, and how to better care for our planet. We also teach your children about responsibility through caring, loving, and being in the company of animals. Our magical indoor petting zoo has a wide variety of animals, including bunnies, chinchillas, guinea pigs, lizards, turtles, birds, tropical fish, and more. You and your child can enjoy The Art Farm in many ways, we offer classes, birthday parties, 2 year old play groups, weekend programs, summer and holiday camps, drop-​ins, memberships, outreach and field trips. Whether you participating in one of our programs or shopping in our toy store you’ll feel right at home, down on the farm.

History

Established in 2002.

In the summer of 1999, Valentina Van Hise met Mari Linnman, the founder of The Art Farm in the Hamptons. Valentina came to The Art Farm in the Hamptons as a music teacher for toddlers. With Valentina’s bachelor’s degree in Music Education and her unique talents as a music teacher she flourished in the Hamptons.

In 2002, Mari and Valentina decided to open The Art Farm in The City, on the Upper East Side in Manhattan. For the past 12 years, Valentina has been the director and works along with Mari to create innovative new programs. Initially, The Art Farm in The City began offering Mommy & Me classes, and birthday parties; and has now expanded to a pre-​school, gentle separation Play Group, summer camp, after school classes, drop in/​off Play Time, and Open House for children ages 6 months to 8 years. Mari and Valentina are proud mothers and enjoy working in a child-​friendly environment.

My 2 years old grandson took art and music classes there and loved it! Every class ends visiting the animals downstairs and the children get to let them. The teachers are very sweet and allow the kids to experience things in their own way, this doesn’t mean the classes are not structured, the classes are well organized but I loved the fact that the classes are very much age appropriate.

I really enjoyed my trip here. I believe I paid approx. $ 40 for an hour to pet and experience their animals with my daughter (they have turtles, reptiles, guinea pigs, a chicken, chinchilla, rabbit, gecko, mouse, dove.etc.). I hope in the future they can partner with schools that statistically are of lower income so that everyone in the community (like East Harlem just a few blocks north of them) can enjoy and celebrate the joy that animals bring and their services.

My daughter attended an exotic animals birthday party here. I was really upset by the use of animals for pure entertainment with no regard for the animals wellbeing or safety. Animals are kept in a basement with no natural light. Kids were running and screaming and the staff didn’t control the kids. There was a large turtle just placed in the middle of the floor with kids running around it! I couldn’t believe it. No staff member was watching to make sure he was ok. The turtle got nearly flipped by a kid and almost kicked a number of times. I pointed it out to a staff member who said that he is always placed there and ‘it’s fine’. This could’ve been a wonderful way to teach kids about kindness to animals but instead perpetuated the all too common theme that animals are for our entertainment and should be subject to loud screaming kids stomping around them and nearly trampling them in a basement.

Art Farm in the City is amazing! I had a great experience here and the kids loved it! The employees are extremely helpful and patient (as are the animals). This is a great place for kids to learn all about animals and enjoy a fun, different day in the city! We got to pet/​hold turtles, a chicken, chinquilla, rabbit, gecko, mouse, dove, and more!

While the concept is great and the classes offered are very appealing, our experience was not optimal because of some of the staff. We participated in the toddler cooking class, there were about 10 kids in the class, the teacher was stressed and a bit rude at times. She claimed to be patient but was anything but patient with the kids. The food given is not the one the kids cooked (this was expected) but the recipe was not shared because of a book that is being worked on. The animal experience was great (bunnies, turtles, chicken, hamsters, lizzards)! As we were getting ready to leave we were browsing the things they have for sale and were asked to leave because our son was running around. They were however willing to ring us for anything we wanted to buy as long as my toddler did not run around — at this point we left. My honest opinion — they need more staff to not compromise the experience.

We recently had our daughter’s 2nd birthday at the Art Farm. Everyone had a wonderful time. It was a great mix of music time, art time, and petting zoo time. The best part was the staff and how helpful they were throughout.

The place has a great idea. There is a small petting zoo like establishment in the basement. They have animals in cages and the staff would take the animals out one at a time to introduce to the children. They have guinea pigs, rabbits, birds, chinchilla, chicken, hamsters, turtles, lizards and chickens. They had the guinea pig and rabbits out to put them on the kids laps for a few seconds.
Upstairs there are two small rooms. One has toys for kids to play in, no shoes in there. The other room they use it for art or cooking.
The place can get packed at time. They have open play for drop in which cost $ 20 per child.

For my daughter’s fifth birthday, we had Gabby bring in some of the smaller pets to the party for the kids to enjoy and learn about. She was very professional and the kids were thrilled. Definitely recommended.

This is a very special, gentle and lovely place! Have brought my son here for drop-​ins a few times and as soon as we walk in the door, he shouts «Animals!» and tries to run for the stairs. We also just had his birthday party here, and it was a breeze — easy to set up, and the staff were so well-​organized and nice to work with on the day of the party. The staff are excellent with the children, the animals are treated very well, and the classes (music, art, cooking) are fun and age-​appropriate.

We have gone for drop-​in sessions to interact with animals and even organized a HOLA NYC visit there! We love what they stand for and what they do. Animals are well taken care of and staff are kind and patient. I only know their Manhattan location but I bet their Hamptons location is also wonderful.

Updating here. Our son insisted on having his party at The Art Farm for the 2nd year in a row and with good reason. It was so much fun. This year we added on the exotic animals to the party and the kids had a blast and were so engaged! Again, the staff was amazing and it was an overall great day. My son was so happy.

I had my son’s first birthday there a couple weeks ago and we had the best time ever! Guests decorated a t-​shirt for the birthday boy, children then took part in a music activity, followed by an art activity, then came the awesome animals!!! All of the children were so excited to pet the animals and learn more about them — it’s perfect for all ages. We then ended with lunch and cake. Everyone who worked there was so eager to help, flexible, and super friendly! All of our friends and family kept calling/​texting us after saying how much fun they had :) We highly recommend having your child’s birthday at Art Farm!!!

We had Gaby come to our apartment for my son’s 7th birthday party. She brought 5 touchable animals — a Dutch rabbit, box turtle, dove, hamster and leopard gecko.
Gaby was very gentle with the animals and most importantly, was able to hold the attention of a group of 17 very excitable and energetic kids. She was unfazed by the wall of noise, and patiently explained the characteristics of each animal.
The kids had a blast and I would certainly recommend having an Art Farm party at home.

We still love the Art Farm!
My youngest daughter just completed the Nursery School program and we could not be more satisfied.
Brandi, Julie & Kara are amazing teachers. Brandi is able to reach the most difficult of children and you can see that she really loves the kids. Julie and Kara are wonderful people who are great with the kids. They provide a wonderful, warm and nurturing environment. Christina is a delight to deal with. She maintains a very controlled, welcoming environment.
My daughter learned so much (counting, days of the week, basic mathematics) in a safe stress free environment. She especially loved all the animals, which are well maintained by «Farmer» Jen.
We recently had my older daughters birthday party here. She and all her guests had an amazing time. We did the «animal» party. They had someone come in with all sorts of animals, snakes, tarantula, a dove, a weasel. He was extremely entertaining and the kids loved the experience. The birthday cake was amazing and we would highly recommend having a child’s party here.

Cute. Animals appear to be well taken care of (I guess? I don’t know that much about animal care), and the staff is friendly and patient with children. My little one is 13 months, and the girls brought out a hamster and a guinea pig for him to pet. He was more interested in cruising around the table and chairs. Go figure!
Price for drop-​in is per child (I suppose), as my wife, my son, and I were all one price. Well worth it to get in from bad weather and check out some friendly animals.
I looked around the rest of the property, and it looks like they run a respectable operation (classes, camp stuff).
