History

Established in 2006.

Penny Locke has been training dog owners since 2006, in the importance of understanding the needs of each dog, and the role of the human as leader/​decision maker. Without clear leadership, our dogs may display undesirable behavior that can be disruptive and potentially dangerous. With effective and kind protocols, these behaviors can be changed.

I am excited to teach you about the amazing language of canines. Learning this language is necessary to live in harmony with our companions and help them reach their potential. Fortunately for us, canine language is universal; Every dog speaks the same language. My own journey started in 1995 when I adopted my first dog from Golden Gate Labrador Rescue. Jordan was a sweet, gentle 2-​year-​old yellow Labrador. He became my constant companion. But while he excelled in obedience classes, he barked fiercely when people came to our front door. Nothing we did deterred him. In an effort to help, my father sent me a copy of «The Dog Listener» by UK-​based canine behavior specialist, Jan Fennell. Reading Jan’s book opened my eyes to understanding Jordan’s key needs. Since I was failing to provide guidance for him, his only choice was to take care of things himself. By using Jan’s techniques consistently, Jordan’s behavior began to change. This was a turning point for me.

Penny has taken care of our dogs for over 5 years. They love going to her place, love how calm and clear she is, and thoroughly enjoy the social time they get with other dogs. I credit Penny with keeping my terrier female very comfortable and social now through her 9th year, with time with other good dogs and rest when she needs it.
My dogs always come back relaxed and happy, and Penny’s communication with me while I travel keeps my heart warm!

I found Penny on Unilocal.I read her website and contacted her about my new puppy. Her suggestions were calm, helpful, and practical. I like that she takes the temperament of the dog into account.
Our situation is complicated because I’m bringing my dog to work where everyone has different behaviors, ideas, and advice that they just learned from TV to give you. Penny provided a safe path through all of that. She came to my home and then workplace, was clear and thoughtful, helped set up an environment for the puppy to succeed in, and has made my life easier through the sometimes trying puppy phase. She helped me to see that he is a baby, no matter how calm and grownup he acts sometimes.
She is accessible and always has good advice for the situations that come up. She is helpful, kind, positive, and knowledgable. Her knowledge is based on sound principles of dog behavior and training, not just her opinion, like some trainers. It’s hard to know who to trust in an ocean of conflicting advice. Penny is professional and personable and knows her stuff.

I called All About Canines because I wanted help with specific training issues with my 5 month old pup… I’m so glad I did!!! Penny Locke came out to see me so that my pup was in a space that she was comfortable in. We covered more in one hour together than 5 weeks at some other puppy school. Everything Penny suggested made perfect sense, and is so easy to incorporate into simple daily training. And IT REALLY WORKS!!!

As always Penny is 5 star. We left our wonderful and much loved dog with Penny while we attended the MJF last month. Oliver wasn’t feeling at the top of his game with a few stomach issues when we left him. We actually considering cancelling to stay with him.
She texted and sent photos to ease our anxiety. When he seemed to be developing something more serious she texted she would take him to the vet the next morning. All in all, he didn’t have to make the trip to the vet, but it’s so nice to know he is with someone that will make that decision and take care of it.
He loves staying with her, we know he is in good hands and his training is being reinforced, since she trained us. Come to think of it, he seems to be a better all around after he visits Penny. I highly recommend.

Penny has been instrumental in helping us understand our two dogs’ behaviors and how we can improve things. Her wisdom, knowledge, and sense of humor made her very easy to work with and the whole training and learning experience fun. Penny was very easy to contact and made an appointment for an in-​home visit a week later. She was on time and very personable. From the second she walked in the door it was apparent she was not only an expert in her field but that she genuinely loves what she does. Penny provided us with a wealth of knowledge when it came to dealing with our three dogs. The tips she gave us started helping immediately. I was thoroughly impressed and will using her services again in the future.
