Abe’s Broadway Cleaners & Alterations

Because I saw the great reviews of this business, I called to get some advice on how to clean my beautiful wool blanket which my poor dog threw up on. I bought the blanket in a village in Guatemala known for their soft, beautiful wool blankets, and I was worried about dry cleaning it. I have had soft wool ruined by dry cleaning (at a different business) in the past.
The woman I spoke to was so helpful, and actually told me that bringing it in to them would be costly and that they could not guarantee that the texture would not change as the blanket has no washing instructions on it. She was very understanding about my concerns, took time to brainstorm with me, and finally made a great suggestion for how I could clean it myself. I so appreciate her honesty and helpfulness, that I wanted to write this review. If I ever have dry cleaning I will bring it to Abe’s. It is always such a pleasure to find a business that operates this way!

I would have taken my shirts somewhere else if they had warned me that they would write my name in sharpie on the interior of the shirt.

We’ve been using Abe’s Broadway Cleaners since at least 2012, and we’ve been very happy with the high quality cleaning and careful attention to detail. The location is perfect for us and Joy and her team are wonderful.
We’ve used a number of cleaners previously, and we’ve been much happier with the more gentle treatment of our clothing (including buttons).
Most of our shirts had already been marked up by previously cleaners with our names, so I haven’t paid any attention to our names showing up on our labels. I think this is pretty standard practice.

I’ve been to Abe’s about 3 or 4 times since moving to NE last summer and don’t plan to go back. While the location is clean and convenient, the prices are truly bananas. One small sweater dress: $ 16 to clean. A few basic men’s shirts? $ 54 when I picked them up. And there’s nothing particularly special about their service. I mean, the clothes are clean. I would hope so for those prices. But seriously, what normal people can afford this place? And why budget for it when there are other businesses?

First off, you get what you pay for. If you want to pay less go down the street where they will ruin your clothes.
I always ask «how much will it cost for the cashmere sweater» that’s my way of finding out how much it costs… LOL (referring to previous post)
I never had a bad experience here, in fact they have done a fantastic job on all my clothes, they even sewed on buttons that have fallen off with no charge. I’ve been coming here for 5 years. The people here are always friendly and funny and I like that, NICE people Rock !
I love this place and most of all, they do a GREAT job !!

Reviewers who bellyache about price even as they testify to the quality should keep their fingers off their keyboard and go wait in line at some corporate box store. This place does an excellent job and the people are helpful and nice. They will gladly tell you upfront what the cost will be. If you think it’s too much, go away.

When I recently dropped off my boyfriend and my drycleaning, I had a good enough experience — the price was a little high, but they did a better job then the last place. Until I talked to my boyfriend a few days later.
In general chit-​chat «How was your day?» «What did you eat for lunch?» and «Hey, what did you think of the new dry cleaner?» I expected equally mundane answers to all of the above. Instead he told me, they wrote on all of his shirts. Confused, I asked him to show me, which he did. He pulled out 4 dress shirts of nicer quality — Brooks Brothers, APC, and the like. And in the inner lining, there it was — pen markings. Not his last name, but mine scrawled on the inside of all his shirts. When I checked on my dress shirts, they were all unmarked.
When I called Abe’s they didn’t understand why I was so upset. They asked how could they possibly be able to tell one customer shirt’s apart from another’s. I. Was Flabbergasted. After I brought the shirts back in the next day, I spoke with Joy who did her best to be kind while having to deal with my frustration over the situation (thus the additional star). After pointlessly trying to explain why it is not ok to write on grown adult’s shirts, they resolved that the issue was because it was my last name in his shirts, not his. No. Not at all.
It took two separate trips into their shop for them to complete the job of removing the ink from his shirts. They did not offer any refund and assured me that this would not happen the next time. That was the only thing they were right about — it won’t happen again because there will be no next time.

They do a very good job with dry cleaning and laundering our clothes. The workers are very friendly and polite. The only problem I have with this place is that they are so darn expensive. I usually take in a large order and the bill is easily over $ 100. Other places we have been to in the past were much more reasonably priced. Our normal order would be closer to $ 60 so I don’t know why this place is so expensive. We have to switch due to the cost.

This place isn’t bad. My clothes were clean and the people were nice. However, as another Unilocaler wrote, they won’t tell you how much things cost. I took in pants and a vest. It took 6 days and cost $ 20. The next time I went to Walnut Park Cleaners on Killingsworth. The same pants and vest cost $ 11, the people were even nicer and it only took 4 days.

They did a good job cleaning my clothes and the staff are friendly. However, they do not provide an itemized receipt when you pick up your clothes, only a credit card recipe. I specifically asked if I could have a copy of the itemized receipt listing the cost to clean each item, they said no, they keep all copies.
How am I supposed to determine the cost per item, compare their costs to other cleaners, or confirm that they are charging me the amount previously quoted? This struck me as highly unprofessional and I will not go back until it is resolved.

Not sure if $ 3 for a laundried shirt is good or not. Just doing it for the hubby. What I do know is they are very friendly and helpful. When I was picking up the shirt the guy in front of me had probably 10+ suits and a bunch of shirts. They sent one of their staff out to help him carry everything to his car. He would have had to do two trips to his car there was so much. That’s service!
Don’t get confused the the alterations place next door. I bet that happens every day.

They got my clothes clean.
They charged me a reasonable price.
They got the cleaning done in an expedient manner.
What more can you really say about a dry cleaner unless they do something spectacular or something terrible?
The one thing that really stands out about this place is the guy behind the counter. Young dude rocking a Blazer’s cap. Funny guy. Tons of personality. Talks a mile-​a-​minute. He totally caught me off guard. I love characters like that. Rad.
I’ll be back.

I read the good reviews on Unilocal and headed over to Abe’s. I should have read the Google reviews. This place is wildly expensive! Slacks are 10 dollars — a simple polo shirt is 5. My coat cost 20 dollars and they gave me an incorrect, too high total for my items. They are friendly people but they are casual about the care of the clothing, plus charging outlandish prices. Check the google reviews of this place and steer well clear.

UPDATE! ABE IS STAYING OPEN UNTILL 7!!! on weekdays. can I give 6 stars?

Abe’s Broadway Cleaners is a really solid and reliable family dry cleaning business. They are in my neighborhood and I have never been disappointed with the quality of the service I received. I’ve never utilized the alteration services, but I’d say they are definitely top notch cleaners.

Here’s the scene. I’m sitting on the floor painting my 4 year old’s nails. My 2 year old toddles in, and in the span of 6 seconds, he grabs a bottle of electric-​blue nailpolish from the bag on my lap, opens it, and spills it all over my black designer jeans. This is the closest I’ve ever come to crying over ruined clothing. I decided to give it 1 try at the dry cleaners. I told Abe to do whatever he needs to do, bring out any chemicals necessary. I was not worried about ruining the jeans, as they were already ruined. He said «Give me 5 days, I’ll see what I can do.»
5 days later I am presented with spotless black jeans. No trace of nail polish or chemical cleaners. Not even a touch of fading. I look at the jeans and cannot tell where there was once electric-​blue nail polish.
Abe is a miracle worker.

honest abe’s.
i dropped of two way-​cool mod leather and fur (one fake, one real) knee-​length jackets i’d just snagged for $ 25 total at a nearby estate sale. they smelled of cat urine, smoke and moth-​balls, but were in otherwise perfect condition.
and then? i forgot about them. for about a year.
yes, i am *that* stupid. but in my defense, they literally went from my car to the cleaners, never taking up residence in my closet — where i undoubtedly would have pined for them in their absence.
anyway, i have this vague recollection of abe’s calling me at some point ages ago to let me know the real fur one was very fragile (the fur was coming off), so they wanted me to release their leather cleaner from any damage liability.
but i didn’t call back. and a year went by.
i’d thought of the jackets a few times throughout the year, and wanted to stop by — but every time i thought of it i was miles away or they were closed.
but abe’s persisted. and they called again. it was a saturday, and they were closed. i was in the ‘hood and said i could stop by in mere seconds. they said «come on by! we’re closed but just walk in.» COOL!
and there were my splendid jackets! all shiny and new and smelling of cleanliness and leather!
abe’s always totally remember me — i’m forever bringing in vintage estate-​sale oddities that they love to work on. they weren’t miffed at all that i’d let those jackets take up space for a year — they were excited to give them back.
oh sure, they also wanted to be paid. this is not a discount cleaner. this is a good old fashioned family dry cleaners who take pride in their work and their customer service. and i’m more than happy to support this type of quality, local business.

Abe’s is a great place to get your clothes cleaned, and cleaned well. It is not a discount cleaner, but I have dropped off quite a few of my own and my husband’s items, as well as gotten my wedding dress preserved, and they are definitely very accurate and honest in their estimates and their promised delivery. The only downside is cost, which is slightly higher than average. In the end, you get what you pay for, and I feel it is definitely worth my money.

You know when you have what you assume MUST be a jello shot stain on your favorite dress?
It’s all bright pinkish red and you’re like «what in God’s name did I consume that was that color?»
And then you remember that night at Ladd’s Inn where jello shots were $ 1 and flowing like highly gelatinous water?
And you see the stain the next time you put the dress on, but you’re running late and will yourself to forget it’s there and it’s going to be dark where you’re going anyway, and when your friend points it out, you act shocked like you hadn’t even seen it yet?!
You FINALLY get around to taking it to the cleaners and have to point it out to the man behind the counter and play dumb about knowing what it is AGAIN (you don’t want your cleaners knowing you’re a lush, okay? plus, who drinks jello shots anyway?)
Anyway, you need that dress back like, tomorrow and he says «sure thing!» but you’re skeptical.
Guess what? He totally delivers in less than 24 hours, stain-​free, crisp, and lovely. It was $ 15 but totally worth it.
And now I can stop living a lie.
