History

Established in 2006.

Aikido Yoshokai was first taught in Portland by Dick and Lindi Moser-senseis at Montavilla Community Center on January 11, 1994. Following Kushida-senesi’s example, they taugt with respect, positive reinforcement, and very clear, step-by-step instruction. Thanks to their dedication and energetic teaching style, Aikido Yoshokai has grown from one school with two instructors and four students in 1994, to three schools with six instructors and nearly 150 students today.

Peninsula Odd Fellows Aikido was opened in 2006 at the invitation of Peninsula lodge #128. The lodge learned of Yoshokai Aikido through various community services that the two organizations were involved in. Feeling that North Portland could benefit from Aikido, they asked for a dojo to be opened in their building.

Through all the changes that Yoshokai Aikido has seen in Portland, one thing has not changed: our commitment to teach correct Yoshokai techniques with respect and encouragement for every student.

David S.

Business Owner

David is a 3rd degree black belt and Shidoin instructor in Yoshokai Aikido. He was introduced to the art while working for the Portland Park Bureau’s Disabled Citizens Recreation program. He attended his first class in 1994 as a «big brother», assisting a young man with attention deficit disorder. David was so impressed with Aikido and the instructors, that he became a student himself.

In addition to his work for the Park bureau, also worked in special education for Multnomah ESD for over ten years. In 2003, he left the ESD to study Exercise Science. In 2006 he formed Everyday Fitness, a private personal training studio www.everydayfitness.org.

David is dedicated to the dream of his teacher, that Aikido be affordable for all who want to learn. Portland has three Yoshokai dojos, Average cost of training in these dojos is $ 3/class. At the Peninsula Odd Fellows dojo, David helped establish a scholarship fund to ensure that no student was ever turned away for financial reasons.
