Altar is an alternative handmade fashion boutique located on historic Hawthorne Boulevard, in Portland, Oregon. We are dedicated to beautiful clothing and accessories that are inspired by the natural world and the spirit of the Northwest. The shop curates an edgy, dark bohemian aesthetic and celebrates a new generation of american artistry and manufacturing.

Altar is a destination for gorgeous jewelry and incredible handmade clothing. We believe in the power and value of quality handmade goods and Altar is our place to share these keepsake pieces with you.

History

Established in 2010.

Altar was born in January of this year and is the next iteration of the shop Mag-​Big, began by co-​owner Cassie Ridgway in 2010. Mag Big sold handmade goods by Portland artists for years in the same location that Altar is now but closed it’s doors in 2015 and reopened as our new store. Altar carries on the spirit of Mag Big by carrying almost entirely hand made goods by mostly local artists. If you we’re a fan of Mag Big and you haven’t come by yet, we invite you to stop in and see the changes we have made!

Meet the Business Owner

Business Owner

Cassie owned Mag-​Big for four years before the big shop rebrand in 2015 when we became Altar. She is in charge of the Altar Houseline — cutting, sewing and styling all of the pieces upstairs in the sew shop. She loves Batman comics, Danzig and in her spare time she plans fashion shows and works at her other job as a waitress.

The other half of shop is Amy, who joined the team we began Altar. She is also the designer/​maker of our house jewelry line Iron Oxide Designs. She loves Halloween, her houseplants and when she isn’t working can be found bothering her cat.
