Bishops is great. Free beer while you wait, cool décor, great stylists. Also FYI– if you find a stylist you like, you can request them. A lot of people seem to be complaining about not getting the same person twice. You can if you ask!

I usually go to the Bishops on NW21st or the Pearl location, depending on which ever is closest to where I’m staying, however, I haven’t been super pleased with a cut from either of these two shops for the past 6 years. Meh, whatever, it’s only $ 28 and hair grows back. On an off chance I happened to drive by the NE28th location, and decided to give it a shot. Everything went normal as Bishops goes. Offered a beer or water when I walked in, my wait was only 10 – 15 mins, and my stylist was a lovely lady named Chloe. I went in with a picture of how I wanted my hair to look, she glanced at it for about 5 seconds, and then I prepared myself to be underwhelmed, because lets face it, we never get what we want. Imagine my surprise when my hair looks exactly as I wanted it to look when she’s finished. It. was. Effing. PERFECT. I could not believe the mind meld that took place that day. It’s two days later and I still can’t believe how fucking amazing my hair looks. All. of. the. TIME. The last time this happened, my stylist up an moved across country to Miami. Now I can only imagine that this one will decide to flee to Europe or something when I’m not looking. But for now, I’ll be seeing her every 6 months for some rockin’ hair love.

BISHOPSONNE28THGAVEME A BADHAIRCUT ANDTHEWORSTDAYOFMYSHORTLIFE!!! A couple of friends recommended Bishops on NE28th. The place seemed cool. My expectations were high. I want to be cool. I figured this cool hip place with the tattoo gals would help me on the road to coolness. I placed myself in their hands. Boy what a mistake. They gave me the«Orangutang Cut.» Essentially they shaved by head leaving a small unruly, tangle tuft of hair at the front. Speechless and in shock I paid, left and headed to work. Walking to work I noted people looking at me in awe. Maybe the cut was ok. I enter my office. Eighteen workmates stared at me like I was an alien. Dead silence. About six seconds passed before the laughter erupted with the power of a volcano. And continued, and continued, and continued. They all said my haircut was the funniest stunt they have every seen. The laughs and giggles continued throughout the day. Finally the day ended. I stopped at a drug store bought a pair of wahl clippers and promptly shaved my head when I got home. I wanted to be cool. Bishops made me a laughing stock. Is this comedy cuts? Was I on a Portlandia episode? PS My new nickname at work is monkey hair. Thanks Bishops!!!

So. No beer. And a 45 minute wait. I didn’t mind about the wait(I was warned when I walked in the door). But no beer was a little bit sad. Everything else was a pleasant surprise. The staff were super friendly, making sure to greet everyone who came in the door and advise them on the approximate wait time. The customers weren’t what I was expecting – on a random Monday morning, it was me(a 30-something woman) and a whole bunch of men in their 50’s or 60’s. Later, it was me and some younger(and hipper) men. Now, as for the haircut, I went in with a weird set of strictures. I wanted to keep my hair long enough to put in a ponytail and/or bun. I also wanted to have some horrid ancient blobby side-bangs blended into the haircut. I also wanted some of the weight taken out, but not so much that my hair would explode into a giant frizzy tent(which it had been known to do after certain haircuts). And I am happy to report: success on all levels. No giant hair tent. Side-bangs that are starting to disappear. And a cute ponytail whenever I want it(or nice long layered hair when I don’t). A very reasonably spent $ 30(not counting tip). I’ll totally go back.

I felt that the stylist got my vision. Even though I was unsure of my new short do at first. I love it now! She did what was needed.

First of all, I am super bummed to be leaving this review, and I think I’m being nice leaving two stars. I went in for highlights, more specifically– to fix my highlights. I told Jim how disappointed I was in my hair, telling him my previous stylist made my hair super splotchy and uneven. After I went home and inspected my color, I was mortified. One of the worst color jobs I’ve had done, especially for someone who has been doing hair for 10 years. Also, the most frustrating part is he gave me his number because he wanted to show me around town. When I contacted him for a refund, I never heard back from him. Unprofessional and Sloppy.

I had my hair cut at Bishops tonight and could not have asked for a better experience. After having two dreadful haircuts on my long, thick hair in the last couple of months, one after another trying to fix the last, I skeptically tried yet another time to get it right. First of all, I got off work late and was so thankful to notice they were open until 9pm. When I got to the Hawthorne location around 8:30 they let me know that they were booked for the rest of the night. But rather than telling me to come another day, they called the NE28th location and had me put on the list knowing it wouldn’t be until the last minutes that they were open by the time I would get there. Cheerfully greeting me as soon as I got there, Elisa sat me down right away and thoughtfully considered what I was looking for and sure enough I left with the BEST haircut I’d ever had, and for only $ 30. She took my horrid, entirely uneven and choppy layers and whack side bangs and blended them perfectly in addition to thinning my layers. She was also considerate of the fact that I really didn’t want much length taken away while she trimmed and evened the bottom. My hair is now amazing and I will never have my hair cut anywhere else!

Either they were rude and inconsiderate with the common courtesy and/or customer service sense that god gave a bean, or my expectations are just way too high. I left after having waited DOUBLE the time they had originally told me the wait would be. I let them know why I was leaving. This would be unacceptable in most circumstances, but particularly since I was with two young children, and since I had checked in with the front desk person once before. I’m really not sure what could be offered to me to make up for the lost time and the frustration for being so inconsiderately treated. Very disappointing. As retail experiences go, on my own personal scale, this was medium outrageous.

Cool staff, so-so price point, nice results. So why only 3-Stars? Because the no-reservation policy sucks! Most quality places take them, even Barbers allows you to call-in on the same day. How hard is it to take a name? The customer doesn’t show-up, you give away their slot. But no, you rather have me wait in your ice cold shop for 45-minutes listening to your blasting metal music rather than spend that time in my own home. As a pseudo consolation you can drive down there, fill-in the sign-in sheet, and come back later. Makes no sense. …thanks for the $ 3 Unilocal Check-in coupon, cool.

I get an OK haircut here and a bit spendy for a «haircut». … but the late hours are convenient, so that is a plus. The staff are all very very friendly which is also a plus. I want a lot off the sides, and not too much off the top, but I usually get a lot off the sides and too much off the top and wind up looking like TinTin. Maybe I am just not explicit enough in my instructions… I’ll keep on going when I need the later hours. Oh, one time a stylist suggested her«Don Draper fade,» and that cut was damn good. Got another one like that recently too that was damn good, so it’s a tough call, not five stars, but more like 3.75

Always have a good experience with cuts at Bishops. I’ve been visiting the location on 23rd mostly but since moving over to the inner NE this has become my new Bishops. I stopped by on a Sunday for a textured cut after bleaching my hair out and received awesome service/cut from Amy. She did a great job and was able to easily interpret the style I was looking for. This Bishops is as great as the rest and a must for ladies cuts.

I’ve gotten both the best and worst haircuts here. You are at the mercy of the skill of the stylist, as you really would be anywhere. But at least with B, you can expect that the stylists understand«hip» as opposed to «soccer mom Supercuts.» And, as in the case of the Absolute Worst Haircut, Bishops proved its valor. Sunday, I received«The Rachel.» It was seriously awful, to the point that I felt a little personally insulted — did the stylist really think I was a dork or something? My husband deemed it «mushroom-like» when I got home, at which point I had to call the place back, for the first time in my entire life, to see if anything could be done. And thank god, they were super nice about it over the phone. I was reassured that I could come back in and get a fix. Which would have been cool, but… they assigned me to the same stylist. This is a curious policy, because her lack of skill is what forced me back in the first place. I asked for a bob, but she insisted on only slicing off an inch. Again, she just wasn’t the stylist for me. This time, we dubbed my cut«The Sheryl.» I tolerated it for two days before I broke down. I called a different Bishops establishment and explained. Again, super, super nice and understanding. They welcomed me in at 8 pm, did a beautiful job — just what I wanted! — and apologized for the multiple trips. Because the structure of my cut had to be changed so much, due to the first two cuts’ worth of damage, she initially said«I’ll have to charge you» and I felt a little bummed — but really, I had no choice, so I said yes. Ultimately, she only charged me for a trim. For which I am doubly grateful. So, the worst wasn’t the worst, and I’ll probably go back for maintenance cuts only.

I was visiting family and friends in Portland and decided i was due for a haircut. After the advice of a local i landed at Bishops, I don’t remember the name of the woman that cut my hair but i was so great i would fly up to Portland again to get the exact same cut. I don’t remember her name but i severely wish i could find a barber half as skill as she was, down in southern California. I would try to describe her but most of the barbers there have a unique style that only Portland has. I believe she has pink hair, i know her chair was right near the entrance.
