Decent new release section and back issue stock. Lacks keys and high grade books. Pricing for back issues are high and you might have better luck buying on ebay. Over all decent store worth a visit but don’t expect to find anything special that would add great value to your collection. Was hoping for more.

Probably THE shop to go to in Portland if you’re looking for back issues. Their selection is huge and dominates the store. I’ve found some nice gems every time that I visited. They also stock a huge number of books, but it’s not a deep selection. The newest weekly comics are probably this store’s weakest point. They’re organized in an odd way (and around all of that back issues) that doesn’t encourage browsing.

This is a classic comic shop. My son found a nice comic book and has asked to go back a few times. The staff was very friendly. I would recommend this to the true comic fan. Not much in the way of games or plastic toys if that’s your thing.

Great attention to customers needs and always helpful. The selection is of course like no other in the city but wish the isles to walk is a little bigger when huge crowds come it like traffic jam on 26.

Huge back issue stocks. However, boxes are very full which makes it harder to flip through the books.
Although comics are bagged and boarded, they are by no means in decent shape. Why put bag and boards on those beat up dreks? It seems like they’re asking us to pay for the time they spent bagging and boarding their inventory.
Their wall books are over graded and waaaaay over priced. Maybe better to go with eBay.
The shop appears to be a family owned business, staff tries to be friendly and helpful.

If you’re into digging this is the right joint. Miles of back issues and a very helpful friendly staff. The walls are lined with trades (graphic novels for you noobs) and the place is clean and organized. We really enjoyed our visit.

THE place in Portland to go for back issues, graphic novels and superb conversation from a genuinely knowledgeable, friendly, interested staff of comic book geeks. The most authentic comic shop experience in Portland.

Pros:
— Largest selection of back issues you’re find in the Portland area. No other comic shop comes close to this one! Everything was super organized to boot. If you’re looking for an older comic, make Excalibur your first stop.
— Friendly staff! They mostly leave you alone to browse instead of pestering you, but when you have a question they give you their full attention and are super friendly.
— The very first time I went in there was this super friendly dog that greeted me at the door! I haven’t seen him since, unfortunately.
Cons:
— All they carry is comics, so you’re not going to find any statues or action figures here. They will special order figures for you, but in all honesty you can likely hit up one of the many Things From Another World stores in the area and find what you’re looking for.
For me, that is worth deducting a star because I am a fan of figures you can only get at comic shops (like DC Collectibles merchandise) but if you couldn’t care less about action figures and statues and just want comics books, just consider this a five star review.

Excalibur Books and Comics has a extremely large and diverse selection in Back Issues and Graphic Novels. I thought this was the most organized selection I have ever seen considering the amount of issues they have. I would definitely recommend this place if you are trying to complete your pull list. The only thing I don’t like is that everything is a bit over priced. Could be lowered about 2 – 3 dollars.

This store is well laid out, the service is great and they have comics in other languages. I searched Portland for 2 months for some mainstream comics that were in French. Everyone else kept showing me Asterix or Tintin; Excalibur took me straight to a small, but correct area that had Superman comics in my language. Je vous remercie beaucoup mes amis!

These guys are great. I have heard that it is a family run business and it shows every time I go in there. You usually see the same one to two people behind the counter. I went in one time looking for a comic and switched my box from a different shop to Excalibur that same day. Super friendly service, I am greeted every time I walk through the door. They keep a little bucket with lollipops for the little kids, my son calls this place the «Lollipop Shop» and is always wanting to stop in. One knock I have heard people say is that they discourage casual reading in the shop because they bag their comics that are on display, unlike some other places in town. I don’t do a lot of reading in the shop so I look at it like I don’t have to buy a bag for this comic. I don’t take time to talk a lot of shop with them but I have seen other people do it and they are always willing to take time to talk and help you out.

I love Excalibur! They are super fun and helpful. They also have a great selection of comics and graphic novels. Everyone who works there is very knowledgeable too. Best shop in town!

I love this place, the owner is SUPER NICE and VERY HELPFUL at taking the time to make suggestions and recommend things. Its a family owned business on its second generation of owners and I love that they have been able to keep things going for so long. Hands down my favorite comic book shop.

Excalibur is a wonderful shop. I am friends with the owners and employees at every shop in Portland, but Excalibur still remains a staple for Portland comics. They have a massive back stock of individual issues and a huge collection of trades and hardcovers. Everything is well kept and clean, and I always get my books in mint condition.
In addition to being a box holder there, I am also a freelance illustrator by trade. Excalibur has always treated me and fellow creators with the utmost respect and courtesy. They really make sure we are taken care of and often invite us to take part in community building events.
Every now and then, some people slip through the doors and feel neglected or ignored, but I assure you, if you introduce yourself and tell them what you like, they will be happy to talk to you and help you find the perfect story. Excalibur Comics is our geeky heartbeat in this town. Check them out!

My husband and I came here after getting a late start for comic book Wednesday. (They were the only comic book store in Portland open until 8, yay!!)
HOLY BACK ISSUES!!! It was so awesomely overwhelming! We found so many things that we have been trying to add to our collection. The hardest part was trying to figure out where to start. Also, very hard to stay focused with so many amazing things EVERY WHERE.
We are already planning our next trip back.
If you are in need of comics, especially back issues, and you find yourself in the Hawthorne area, you must check this place out.

Loved this store. It’s 100% comic books and that’s perfect. The current selection looks great and the employees are friendly without being intrusively so. The back issues are just phenomenal. Over a quarter century of collecting comics and this is THE most organized and well maintained comic store I have ever set foot in. My wife even commented on the organization and that says something!
The Silver and Bronze Age comics are along the front of the store. The higher priced are on the wall or inside the glass case. Unfortunately, it looks like the lights in the store are causing a bit of fade on the wall comics, a lesson my grandparents learned when they owned there comic store in the 80s and 90s. However, they have a solid section of boxes on the counter filled with silver age and Bronze Age comics! Just fantastic to look through. The more current, or less pricey, back issues take up a majority of the store. They are labeled clearly and concisely and it looks like no matter how hard Marvel and DC try to muck up there continuity with a restart every 20 issues (Wolverine Vol. 7 folks!), this store has it in check.
Hands down best comic store in Portland.

Final comic stop in Portland, and Portland, Portland, Portland, you have treated me so so well. I went in looking for bounty of back issues and came out with more than I could have ever asked for. The back issues are vast, more than I could have conceived the reviews, but make no mistake, if you are looking for something, there is a very solid chance that they will have it. The staff was friendly and lively, more than willing to help out any novice or veteran alike. The prices were cheap and the organisation is something of legend. I had no trouble locating anything. Fun time here and even better with the comics in hand.

I am a comic book girl. I don’t hide it. In fact I am the geek of comic girls. My best friend and I came here before heading to a show. The lady at the til was super friendly, helpful and shared my love for geekiness. I bought a Gen 13 comic with a Maxx crossover for $ 3.50 and my best friend spent around $ 12 on some comics with a 3D Superman cover. Very good customer service and she loved helping us and shooting the shit. It’s nice to talk to another girl about comics.

One of the Best in Portland! Great selection of comics and trade paperbacks. Drawback is comics are priced at a premium for not premium condition. Needs more room to move around. Little too tight on space.

All of the staff here are extremely nice and helpful. When i was discussing graphic novels with one of the clerks i mentioned a series i liked that i thought had never been finished, but the clerk knew of it, looked it up to find out if any more had been released and then ordered me the one i didn’t have. Each of the 4 clerks i have dealt with have been very friendly and helpful.
They even have a couple of bookshelves dedicated entirely to independent publishers (Oni Press being my favorite), and they cary a lot of limited edition and hard to find graphic novels and hardcovers.
