I love this place. Have been seeing niko for about 2 yrs and she is great. Fantastic cut and color. Just saw Marissa for the first time today for color and cut Bc niko is out on leave. Marissa was lovely. So kind and warm and fun to talk to. Plus she did an amazing job with my hair. Originally she was just going to do color but I had really hoped for a cut too… we just didn’t have much time bc of my schedule. She finished my color and there was still time for cut AND an amazing blow out. It was a pleasure to spend time with her and I felt comfortable telling her exactly what I wanted… and she listened. I will definitely be coming back! Everyone I’ve seen there has been awesome. Thank you!

I had a great experience at Gilly’s salon with Marissa. She listened and understood what I was looking for, the placement and tone of my highlights were perfect. It was great to get my hair colored minus the Ammonia, and the smell was much more pleasant and less harsh then the typical chemical colors. I am going back and recommend her to all.

I just had my hair done by Mardi and she rocked it! This is the first time I’ve been to a salon where they massage your head and shoulders with essential oils. It made me (a control freak), completely relax! Thanks Mardi!

Niko the Hair Sculptress… I went to see Niko with the following unlikely request — make my hair cute, asymmetrical, somewhat shaved, somewhat long, with angled pixie bangs — make it so that I can put it up or wear it down, so that it complements my natural color and curl and so that I don’t have to use product or style it if I don’t want to. Prettyplease. I know what you’re thinking: Poor Niko!!! Well lemme tell ya, girlfriend rose to the occasion and created a masterpiece! I recommend Niko to anyone — she’s a true artist who respects and listens to your requests. I also very much appreciate the salon’s emphasis on green products and that I didn’t come out stinking of smelly perfumey stuff. All in all, a very happy customer here. Thanks, Niko. And thanks to Gilly for her vision of a health-​affirming salon!

Only my favorite stylist OF MY WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE! I think sitting in a salon chair is similar to standing blindfolded along a brick wall with a reluctant cigarette sucking out your last few breaths, only instead of death by firing squad, you might end up walking away with roots that look like they’ve been angrily growing out for months and your wallet screaming at the painful extraction of several hundred dollars. But Mardi is my dreamgirl. I say «do whatever!» and she goes «okay!» and makes me feel like a magical my little pony cupcake that just won the ring toss at a carnival in the clouds.

Brandie Taylor gives great butch cuts! I wanted to look more stylish and Brandie gave me a cut and advice on how to work my best angle.

Brandie Taylor is amazing and I am so thankful that I have found her! I have been searching for the hair cut of my dreams and the stylist to create it since arriving in Portland. I even purchased my own scissors because I was so over failing… but this is no more!
Thank you Brandie for being all around amazing. Thanks understanding my queer femme hair needs and for understanding that to me, femme does not equal conventionally girly identity when I come in to get my hair done.
As for Gilly’s, it is a cute tiny salon. Always super low key and welcoming.

I got a cut from Emily last week. I wanted to be sure that I liked living with the cut before reviewing and I do, so yay!
I have wavy hair that is getting curlier as I get older and she handled it great. She asked me great questions about how much time I spend styling my hair (1 – 5 mins max) and gave me a cut that works with my waves so well that I don’t even have to do that much. Twice now I have gone to sleep with wet, freshly washed hair and woken up with hair that looks great. I’ll definitely be going back, and not just because the place is a 3-​min walk from home.
Just a small clarification: when I called to make my appointment I asked if they take credit cards and Emily said, «I do.» So make sure you ask if the stylist you are getting accepts them if that’s how you plan to pay.

Just got a great haircut from Caity. Caity was recommended to me by a local barista. .. I was getting coffee and told her how great her highlights were and she told me to go see Caity. I made an appointment right away. I got a hair cut and highlights. My hair turned out perfect! The salon is a cute little salon in a very trendy, up-​and-​coming neighborhood near coffee, restaurants, etc. Highly recommended!

I bought a gift certificate at a fundraising auction for a cut from Caitlin, never having set foot in Gilly’s before. I’m so glad I did! Caitlin really tailored the cut to my needs, finding a way to give me a nice haircut that looks good even with my expectation to expend zero effort on a daily basis to make it look good. A big plus is Caitlin’s friendly, approachable personality. I really enjoyed meeting her and will definitely be going back in the future!

Just got a hair cut from Caity McDavid at Gilly’s. I highly recommend her! She gave me exactly what I needed! I feel confident and gorgeous and it’s all thanks to her skill! She’s super and sweet and worked with me to figure out exactly what I needed!

Caitlin at Gilly’s gave me an amazing haircut. She listened to what i want and is the first stylist to not thin out my hair when i told her i didn’t want it thinned out. that being said i also saw a cut she did where the girl told her to do whatever she wanted and she did an AMAZING job.
She did a great color on me, giving me natural highlights that won’t need too much maintenance which is key.
The salon is a tiny place that is so cute! it’s next to an amazing breakfast restaurant broder, i would definitely recommend planning breakfast/​brunch before or after your haircut.
caitlin is fun to talk to and put me at ease instantly. she knows what she is doing and if you don’t know what you want she can ask the right questions to help you get there. of course pictures always help ;)
go see caitlin, you won’t be disappointed! she is there friday and saturdays which works perfectly with my schedule. i can’t wait to go back!

I’ve been getting my hair cut by Tia @ Gilly’s for EVER. Why? Because, she is the best. She is friendly, and extremely talented. I’ve followed her from salon to salon, and even when I lived in California, I couldn’t have anyone else cut my hair. Because she always did a fantastic job, why risk it? I have thick curly hair, and she cuts it great — short or long, every time. She also does beautiful highlights. I always get compliments on my hair. She did my hair for my wedding too, and it was beautiful.
I am so glad she has landed at Gilly’s. The owner is fantastically friendly, and the fact that the place is free of harmful chemicals is swell.

The last few times I’ve had my haircut, I’ve gone to Cara. She is awesome. The layers grow out great. My husband is trying to grow his hair out and I suggested he go there. It was during the helmet head stage and she managed to shape it up nice without cutting too much off. It is growing out very well. Cara also has an amazing personality and I really enjoy the time I spend in this shop. It’s cozy and a great atmosphere. I love the products that they use too. I highly recommend giving it a shot.

I just met Gilly today and had my first cut with her. I came to her in a state of distress having had a disastrous cut yesterday. Gilly took what I thought was irreparable– ‘oh no, have to wait a month to grow it out’- and created my new haircut. I put her in my genius category and am a new loyal customer!

I recently had a haircut with Emie, who seems like a sweet person, though is not the stylist to go to if you have curly hair, as I do.
When I entered the salon, I had shoulder length hair. I told her I was trying to grow out my hair and just wanted a few layers to break up the straight bob, nothing drastic. She cut off all of my hair in the front, leaving me with an unfortunate shag mullet. It was so bad that the person I went to a few days later to fix it didn’t charge me anything because she felt so sorry for me, having to walk around looking like that.
My intention is not to speak ill of Emie, but just to warn other curly-​haired women that they would be better off going to someone who understands curls (I recommend Amie Zimmerman).

I am not really the kind of person who has allegiances to hairstylists or even regular haircuts. but lu devore at gilly’s totally changed that! my friend recommended me to gilly’s and suggested gilly as a hairstylist. she happened to be unavailable when i came in but lu was available, and thus began my relationship with lu!
she has given me consistently great hairstyles on which people routinely comment. i can literally give her a string of slightly-​unrelated adjectives and she comes up with a haircut that just totally fits what i was trying to say…
i also like their environmentally friendly products and their proximity to a really, really good record store.
it would be utterly impossible for me to recommend lu and gilly’s salon too highly!

My care-​free hair has reached a point where care (and an increasing amount of it!) needs to be dealt with. I’m not high maintenance, but my roots are… Gilly saved me!
Gilly’s is a small salon next door to Broder on SE Clinton. All the stylists are their own contractors, so if you pop in & need an appointment, they can set you up. I stopped in & Gilly wasn’t there. Another helpful woman called her on her cell phone, and lo & behold! an appointment was scheduled for me the next morning! Wow! Is that customer service, or what?!
Gilly herself is fabulous! She uses hair color that does not have ammonia, parabens, plastics or that horrific chemical stench! The color seeps into the hair via a dryer (which, by the way, is very relaxing to sit under & read trashy magazines) not ammonia. As for the ‘trashy magazine’, they may just be my particular guilty pleasure, but if you share this peccadillo, you won’t be disappointed. They have ‘em all here & we all had a nice dish session about Angelina’s too many kids, Madonna’s predictable divorce, and, Lord knows what all other territory we covered! All I know is that my roots are now covered, my hair is soft not fried, my bangs are trimmed & lookin’ cute, and I am pleased as punch to have my new go-​to place for my hair’s demands.
I am pretty sure if you check Gilly’s out, you will be very happy. They are a small business. Give them a call. During this recession or Depression or whatever this is, a little pampering goes a long way to mood enhancement! Prices are reasonable, service is amazing, results speak for themselves!
