History

Established in 1987.

New Renaissance opened its doors to the Portland community after owners Jamey and Darlene received strong spiritual guidance. They were at a transition point after selling an environmental fundraising business.

But — what would they do next? During a retreat in a cabin in the Sierras, Jamey asked this question in meditation. And Boom! Within 20 minutes a complete vision of this metaphysical bookstore downloaded, just like a movie playing in his mind. The joy and inspiration propelled them forward and New Renaissance was born.

Over the years it has grown tremendously and become a hub of the Portland spiritual community. We now occupy four Victorian houses, including our Event Center — where spiritual teachers present regularly. Customers tell us again and again how the store nourishes them, how it is a healing place, how they feel relaxed and calm just walking through the door.

It is our mission to be an oasis of light in the city and help each person take their next spiritual step.

Meet the Business Owner

Jamey and Darlene P.

Business Owner

Jamey Potter, originally from Missouri, always loved nature. He studied Botany and Zoology and went on to a career in fundraising for environmental organizations. In addition to being a lifelong nature enthusiast, Jamey had a deep interest in spirituality. As a teenager he began reading Eastern Religion. At 19, he discovered Zen Buddhism and learned to meditate. Later, he became a disciple of Yogananda, one of the first yogis to bring eastern spirituality to the West.

Darlene Potter grew up in Wisconsin, and as a child she had intuitive abilities. At 17 she began reading books on metaphysics. While earning a degree in Social Change at U of Wisconsin, she learned transcendental meditation, opening up a world of possibilities. After discovering the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda, she felt deeply inspired to become his disciple and devote her life to the practices he taught. In 1987, Jamey and Darlene opened New Renaissance to help each person take their next spiritual step.
