History

Established in 1993.

Spire Technologies, Inc. was founded in Portland, Oregon initially as a computer consulting firm, specializing in serving Architectural and Engineering firms. SpireTech expanded to add Internet Services in 1994, built our own datacenter in the late ‘90s, and began offering server hosting (colocation and datacenter) services in that time frame. Over its many years of service, SpireTech continues to evolve to meet the challenges of the ever-​changing technology landscape and the requirements of our customers.

Finding DSL service in Portland was a bit tougher than I thought, having paid $ 25 for AT&T service in San Francisco, plus a $ 12 local phone line. I didn’t want cable because I don’t have a TV or want anything «bundled». I called Clear, but I didn’t want to pay $ 30 a month for a two-​year contract (with an early departure penalty) or pay several hundred dollars up front for connection fees. I just wanted to pay a simple monthly fee for service.
I ended up with a choice of Qwest or Spire. I went with Spire because they’re local and I figured service would be significantly better than Qwest. So far, that’s true. It took a week to hook up my service, due to a connection problem with Qwest (I have to pay Qwest $ 30 a month for the line, anyhow) and I pay Spire $ 12.95 to be my ISP. Download speed is not as fast as it could be, but so far service has been dependable and gimmick-​free.
