What’s The Scoop?

After an underwhelming dinner nearby, we decided to leave the restaurant in search of dessert. We happened upon What’s the Scoop. We were able to try all different flavors of ice cream from traditional to unusual flavors. We settled on getting the Baked Oregon sundae. It’s two scoops of ice cream on a brownie, caramel sauce, homemade magic-​shell topping, covered in marshmallow that is then toasted. It was so rich and delicious! I highly recommend this place.

What’s the Scoop is sadly destined to always live in the shadow of Salt & Straw, but deserves much more than that. It’s beautifully designed and has ice cream that is some of the best you can find nationwide. It’s a different experience than Salt & Straw is and has more basic flavor choices, but more creative ways to eat it with thing like Peanut Brittle, Cookies, and many different sauces. It’s worth coming to, and really is a great dessert stop, but cannot quite live up to the beautiful creature that is Salt & Straw.
TL;DR: A great dessert spot if you’re in the area.

Their icecream is delicious! Salt & Straw gets all the spotlight, so going to let this place shine a little. They offer simple flavors, as well as interesting mixes. Peanut butter curry? It’s pretty crazy, but interestingly enough, it’s good. One bite it’s peanut butter, and the next bite it’s curry. Both flavors are not overwhelming and pretty much compliments each other. Thai iced tea is like drinking an actual drink, but not as sweet. Mint chunk is very minty (in a good way).
Got the waffle cone too, which I could’ve done without. I guess their waffle cone uses fortune cookies? It’s a lot thicker and harder than the usual waffle cones, and the taste is different. Other than that, icecream is superb.

I would recommend coming here!!!
We ordered the Ice Cream Sandwich Experience. It came on a lunch tray with a variety of ingredients like a mini buffet!!! The cookies were moist, chewy, and full of flavor. The honey caramel was amazing. We didn’t care for the hot fudge — it had a deep dark chocolate taste.
Provided a dessert unequal!!!

For me this is a bit out of the way, That is a good thing. I don’t need the temptation very often, and this place is tempting. They have a nice selection of flavors, many of them unique. For toppings they go the extra mile. They don’t just have marshmallow crème, they toast it for you. The service is always quick and friendly. I will be back, its to good not to!

You walk in and you see a nice list of artisan ice creams, you smell the freshly made cones, and you’re greeted by some friendly servers at the counter. You think this is gonna be good!
However it didn’t quite turn out that way for me. I was seduced by the smell of the cones and splurged for it. $ 1.25 later and I was disappointed with the add on. It was really hard and made me think that they might make too many cones in advance? I thought $ 5 for a single scoop that left me disappointed was a feel bad moment.
They do let you sample an unlimited amount of flavors which is nice, but really who does that? It takes a special type of shameless lol. None of the ice cream flavors on that particular day that I had tried were really impressive though.
They also gave me a sample of a cookie which was cool of them.
This place is nice enough, but I’ve had better in the area and I probably wouldn’t make a specific trip just to come here. It is conveniently next to some good food places, so if you need a quick ice cream fix, it’s not bad.

I didn’t believe that my review was harsh enough to harm your small business. My experience wasn’t terrible and it wasn’t spectacular. If a business is getting reviews that are consistently 3 stars or below, it is up to the owner to respond accordingly and make changes to improve the customer experience. Unilocalers make an impact by providing real time feedback which the business can then use to improve.
My reviews are actually mostly positive when you look at my rating distribution and my 3 stars or below reviews aren’t limited to small business owners. I’m a person that often goes out of my way to eat at small or local establishments. I don’t think you are correct that people should first message the owners, because that goes against the entire Unilocaling system. Customers are supposed to write a review on their experiences and rate accordingly.

Once again, another awesome ice cream shop in the Northwest! If there’s one thing the Pacific NW knows how to make, it’s ice cream!
Like many of the ice cream shops in the area, they have a plethora of custom flavors. There was really no line on the weeknight that my group went. I sampled a few flavors before settling on the single scoop Mint Chunk on a Fortune Cookie Cone. Yes, Fortune Cookie Cone! That was the 1^st time I had ever eaten ice cream in a fortune cookie! The ice cream was excellent — savory, tasty and hit the spot on a hot summer night!
Unfortunately, the cone was massive, but the single scoop was not. The scoop sunk into the cone so it looked like I had a half of a scoop only. If you get the Fortune Cookie Cone, I recommend shooting for at least 2 scoops. In addition, there are some seats inside and also some sidewalk tables and seats outside of the shop, so you can enjoy your ice cream right outside on those nice summer days.

This is some darn tasty ice cream and marvelous flavors! They have their shop figured a little differently — if you want to taste the flavors, go to the first station. Ready to order? go to the second station!
I had the bourbon with toffee — it had a delicious strong bourbon flavor, super smooth ice cream and many toffee bits. Even with a crowd of people service was fast and very friendly. And no hour wait in line. They also blend their own vanilla extract. I purchased a bottle to take home. The counter person said it’s extra strong so you can use only half in recipes if you want. It smells like vanilla heaven in a bottle!

On vacation and a friend referred us to What’s the Scoop. I ordered the Baked Oregon and it was delicious. It was super rich because I got chocolate ice cream, so vanilla of mint may be a better option, but it was still excellent. My husband got the mint in a fresh made fortune cookie waffle cone and it was really good as well and tasted like it was made with fresh mint, not flavoring. The ice cream is made from milk from a local dairy. They also offer vegan and gluten free options.

I think this is my new most favorite ice cream spot in Portland! There hasn’t been a flavor yet that I haven’t liked.

Since we had a hard time deciding what we wanted, my friend and I opted to get a flight of ice cream, which consists of your choice of four ice cream flavors and four different toppings… All for $ 7 – 8! Such an awesome option !! My favorite topping has been the streusel crumble and they don’t skimp on how much they add. They also have a frequent eaters card, a sampling station so lines don’t pile out the door, plenty of counter space giving it an open feel, friendly servers, and 2 doorways so people can go in and out without playing sardines is another definite win. Am already looking forward to filling up my card for my ice cream the next time I visit! Yum!

Was recently in Portland on vacation and was staying very near to What’s the Scoop? so we decided to give it a try.
We were immediately greeted when we walked in, asked if we would like to sample a flavor, and then we ordered… except we didn’t. The girl helping us let us get through the entire ordered before she finally said, «This is just the tasting section… they can help you over there.»
Okkkayyyyy.
So, we walked the two feet over to the next counter and ordered. First of all, the scoops were HUGE. I maybe ate one third of my ice cream before giving up and throwing it away. Seemed kind of wasteful.
The flavors, however, were very good. I had thrilla in vanilla and mint chocolate chip. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend those two together, but they were very good separately. I also liked the waffle cone.

Bottom line first: horrible customer service, not very good ice cream.
Worst service I’ve ever had. First off, there are only five people in line… there is no reason to slam the ice cream doors closed with frenzy. The girl working was snarky and disrespectful. I asked to taste the blueberry basil and didn’t care for it. Her response was sarcastic and rude, «uh, really? That’s the one everyone likes. You’re seriously the first person EVER to not like that.» Cool. Thanks for letting me know, dummy. I don’t buy my ice cream based on what the masses like.
To top it all off she then asked what I wanted. I gave my order and she walked away. I stood in line for about five minutes until the guy working walked up to the magnet board, ripped down the flavor I had requested five minutes prior and then asked what I wanted. Ugh. These people make me want to vomit… lame, rude, and snobby.
I refused to give this business a single penny of line and I will not try to support this business ever again.

Our recent trip here was OK. I hate to echo the other reviewers complaining about the lines/​process but I’m going to. The people behind the counter waited a good 5 minutes before explaining that the tasting station and the line were 2 separate things. Then the girl at the tasting station told us she could make our order. The flavors were good but nothing that blew me away. I was really excited for the toasted marshmallow only to be disappointed that it’s more of a liquid marshmallow than a big firm standard one. I also felt like it was really expensive. We paid almost $ 20 for 1 sundae, 1 bottle of water and 2 scoops.

In my world, all ice cream is compared against Salt & Straw. What’s The Scoop doesn’t compare very favorably.
What’s The Scoop has a tasting station, so you can sample the different flavors they have to offer. There were some odd flavors, and not really in a good way. Most of the ones I tried were almost good, but just a little wrong.
I got a scoop of Mint Chunk and a scoop of Kahlua Espresso in a cone. The Kahlua Espresso was good, but the Mint Chunk is mint overload. Altoids claim to be curiously strong, but they’ve got nothing on this ice cream.

Best ice cream in Portland and doesn’t have the hipster hype so it doesn’t have insane long lines. Plus, its WAY better than the ones with the hipster hype.
They have insane flavor combinations. Oh! and sometimes they have Captain Crunch flavor! DOPE! My favorite is the almond butter brittle, so delicious. I’m not a huge fan of the alcohol flavored ones, but thats just a personal thing. I appreciate them when I try them, but could never eat a whole scoop.
Try this place, and get the magic dust! OH! And they have marshmallow puff and they torch it, seriously! YUM!
The cones are killer too, they’re modeled after fortune cookies and have a little surprise chocolate chip at the bottom.

I really enjoyed the thick creamy yet soft and smooth texture of their ice cream. It was very enjoyable. A one scoop waffle come ice cream cost me $ 4.50. Well worth it.
Nice and friendly employees. They weren’t very interactive but they were probably ready to go home. I don’t blame them. Will definitely come back.

This was next to a fabulous pizza spot so its perfect combination. Definitely some tough picks, but no worries they are not shy on tastings to ensure you get what suits your palette!
I had the almond brittle and was that yum! My partner in crime enjoyed her sticky toffee both in bowls.

I would like to see some more eccentric options. I, personally, felt that most of the flavors available kind of blended together. There wasn’t a distinctiveness, but we will sure try again!

Can’t go wrong with a great scoop of ice cream. What’s the Scoop is another great place to visit just like Cloud City, Full Moon or Salt & Straw.
A few of my fellow Unilocalers have graced this establishment and yes, it’s a great scoop of ice cream… minus the Grateful Dead music playing, ugh. Although the dreadlocked cutie with piercing blue eyes made up for it. Sorry, I’m a guy, I notice attractive women. ANYWAYS, WTS has a small list of ice cream but you have some great options. I went with a mint chunk that had Andes Candies in it and my friend had a cucumber sherbet. She loved hers, although I didn’t get to try it. Mine was great. Really good home made ice cream with plenty of mint throughout.
They also tout a fortune cookie ice cream cone. Didn’t try it but on my next visit it could be a great option.
Decent sized shop although on a rainy day, we were the only two customers. No worries. Prices were a little more than I’ve seen at other places but, the good ice cream made up for it.
I will return. Enjoy.

This is a pretty cool ice cream joint, offering unique and unusual flavors and flavor combinations. They let you taste as many flavors as you’d like before you make your decision and I guarantee that trying out a flavor you wouldn’t normally have tried will make you think twice on your decision.
Some highlights include the Toasted Oregon, the peanut curry ice cream flavor, and the spicy chocolate chai ice cream flavor. The toasted marshmallow topping is awesome, as they toast it right in front of you.
The main reason they don’t get 5 stars is the price. My wife and I agreed that each item should have been priced about a dollar to a dollar and a half lower. Trust me, it seems minor, but the current prices seem a bit steep for what you get. I do recommend getting a pint and taking it home, as the ice cream is delicious and the pint is a much better deal than a single serving.
Overall I enjoyed this place and I would definitely be back.

Last night I introduced 4 friends to What’s The Scoop, I am a really good match maker!
Two of my friends chose to enjoy single scoop sundaes, created with a scoop of Brown Butter Almond Butter Ice Cream topped with Hot Fudge, Whipped Cream and Magic Dust! Yummmmmy!
One of my friends decided on the Ice Cream Sampler — 4 smaller scoops of ice cream and 4 toppings for $ 7, well worth it, and it was a lovely site. She seemed to think it tasted pretty darn good too. I believe she selected Spiced Tequila Chocolate, Brown Butter Almond Brittle, Kahlua Espresso and Bourbon Toffee ice creams with toasted marshmallow (yes, they toast the marshmallow topping on your scoop of ice cream with a torch!), hot fudge, magic dust and I can’t quite recall the 4^th, something caramelly I believe.
Our outlier selected Orange Chocolate Chip, it was his favorite of the ones he sampled and he enjoyed it very much.
Me, I stuck to my Spiced Tequila Chocolate, stepping it up a notch by adding some Mint Chunk along side.
We all tasted the Peanut Butter Curry Ice Cream and agreed it was pretty darn tasty even though none of us went big and ordered it for dessert.
