History

Established in 1945.

SJ Denham is a third generation, family owned and operated one stop automotive center providing Chrysler, Jeep, certified pre-​owned vehicles, service, tires, Mopar Parts, collision repair and car rental.

In the 1930s SJ «Stoney» Denham opened a gas station and repair shop in downtown Redding. After World War II, he returned from Fort Lewis, Washington. With assistance from family he built SJ Denham DeSoto Plymouth which offered sales, service, parts and auto body repair. It opened in 1945. Through hard work and a strong commitment to customers, the business grew.

In the 1970s, SJ Denham’s son, Randy, joined the business. SJ Denham Chrysler aspired to become a full service automotive center. In this time SJ Denham added two Hertz car rental locations and a collision repair center.

In 2001 SJ Denham’s grandson, Ryan, joined the business after working with Chrysler Corporation. Since 2001, SJ Denham has expanded to Mt. Shasta and added a tire center for all makes & models of vehicles.

Ryan grew up in Redding, graduated from Shasta High School in 1993, then graduated from University of the Pacific in 1997.

Following college, Ryan went to work for Chrysler Corporation in Pleasanton, CA and Auburn Hills, MI where he was a regional sales manager working with dealerships in marketing, sales, and service and parts.

Ryan moved back to Redding in 2000 to work with his family at their automotive businesses: SJ Denham Chrysler Jeep & Tire Center in Redding, SJ Denham Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Mount Shasta and SJ Denham Collision Repair Center in Redding, and Hertz Rentals in Redding and at the Redding Airport.

We are not accustomed to writing reviews however, the customer service that SJ Denham provided us warranted a heartfelt and appreciative review. I want to express that we did not purchase wisely for our first vehicle, as we purchased it out of town from another dealer. We called the out of town dealer upon issues with our vehicle but could not get a response. We finally made the right choice and went to SJ Denham, not only did the local SJ Denham respond to our needs, the entire staff at SJ Denham treated us like we were their priority customers. SJ Denham, was not our original dealer but they took care of us like we were. To say we received excellent customer service would be an understatement. The entire SJ Denham staff; mechanics, service department, sales and owner, treated us with so much respect and honesty, while having true concern for our situation, that they restored our faith in true customer service. SJ Denham treated us like family, they cared about us and worked hard to ensure that we were 100% satisfied. SJ Denham did not financially benefit from our transaction because they were not our original dealer, we have never experienced this type of service before. To not make money off of us but instead to take care of us because they genuinely cared is unheard of. We cannot speak highly enough about SJ Denham and for what they have done for us. They have gone above and beyond true customer service and we are now and will continue to be devoted customers to SJ Denham. We will not go anywhere else to make another vehicle purchase! If you want honest, caring and excellent customer service, stay local, go to SJ Denham, they will take great care of you and treat you like family!

Do NOT make the mistake of taking your vehicle to SJ Denham for maintenance, repairs, or service! I have foolishly occasionally taken my Jeep there (over the past 5 – 6 years), and i will not trust them ever again. I’ve had several ridiculous experiences with their incompetent and overly-​expensive service department, and the recent one (the last time for me) is a classic example of how strangely good they are at charging me an arm and a leg for screwing up my day and failing to fix the vehicle… Weeks ago, i paid $ 165 them for a diagnosis (compressor replacement needed), but they didn’t have the part. So, after the part came in I made an appointment for the install (plus an oil change). I had been told that it would take about two hours, (so i figured it would be closer to three hours with the oil change). I arrived at 9:10 for my 9:30 appointment, left the Jeep, and was told it would be ready by 1:00 PM. By 12:45 i hadn’t heard from them so i called to ask if i could pick it up at one, as planned. Service guy was not available, so they said he’d call me back. No call back, and i needed to get home (an hour from Redding), so I biked back to Denham and (at 1:40 PM!) was told that they forgot to order all the necessary parts to properly replace the compressor, so they had only done the oil change (while I waited for over four hours, with no update calls!). Getting out of there was even more ridiculous scenes in the comedy of errors… It took 25 minutes for the service tech to get the paperwork done (so I could pay) and the vehicle brought up (so I could leave)! It ended up being after 2:30 PM when I left, because I had to get another service guy to make a new «Next Oil Change» sticker, since they had written the wrong mileage, claiming that an oil change would be needed in 2,000 miles, when actually the expensive synthetic oil they sold me will not need a change until 7,000 miles of driving (according to one of their mechanics)! The guy was asking me what mileage to write in, and he refused to look up the manufacturers recommendation (which I later checked, and it’s 6,250)… But actually, there is one thing they are good at (but it’s not part of the service dept.) — the one thing that did go smoothly is when I had to PAY the teller! *No wonder the oil change was so expensive– IT TOOK FIVE HOURS!

My husband and I purchased a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee from the wonderful staff at SJ Denham. I’m so pleased with their service and they were more than happy to help us find our perfect Jeep! My car did have the check engine light come on around 3k miles but it needed a software update. The staff at SJ Denham got me in and on the road in a quick manner and calmed my nerves. Thank you!

I will never ever go to sj Denham again. They charge me 300 dollars to verify diagnosis on my vehicle. The original quote for the diagnosis was 119 dollars but ended up at 300 dollars. It took them 2 days to verify the diagnosis on my vehicle that my mechanic did in 35 minutes. They did not make the diagnosis until the second day after I called them and again reminded them that the problem happened when I turn my head lights on and the lights would start randomly going on and off. My mechanic told me it was the module that was only available at the dealership so I had to take it to the dealership to be repaired. So I call the dealership told them this information and it still took them 2 days to diagnose the problem to tell me it was the same thing that my mechanic found in 35 minutes. When I called and reminded them about the problem on the second day they told me my vehicle was not having that issue yet after talking to them I received a phone call back less than 10 minutes later to tell me after having my vehicle for 2 days to tell me the problem started happening right after I called them and told them it happens when I turn the headlight switch on. I was told though when I went to pick up the vehicle that the headlights issue had been happening the whole time they have the vehicle by one of the other technicians. I was charged for total of $ 994.80 to have my vehicle repaired. then when I go to pick up my vehicle the bar going to the emergency brake handle was wedged behind the side paneling down by my feet the insert on the steering column for the gear shift was hanging loose on the shift handle and as I drove the vehicle home my warning light for the airbags stayed on the whole time. so I called them back and they told me to bring the vehicle back and I did at which time I was told there is a loose connection on one of the airbag switches yet they felt it was safe enough for me to drive home with no problem to my safety. I will never ever go to SJ Denham again and I will be filing a complaint.

I had the worst experience from the auto repair part of this company. I told the company that I had a broken supply pump when I brought my dodge cummins in then and it took them 24 hours to get a complete diagnosis with me calling them every single hour to see if they had even made any progress. And of course the outcome was that the supply pump was broken. They charged me 150 dollars for this BS diagnosis. They also charged me 11 $ for diesel when I had half a tank of fuel already. What was the point in that? They also killed my battery with all their tests that I had to then buy a new battery from them for 171 $. They tried to get me to convert my supply pump into the way the new dodges were and told me that would be over 1000 $ because they would have to go through the entire engine. They told me that they don’t sell the old supply pumps anymore. Which FYI places do. I took my dodge to Shasta county diesel and bought a supply pump brand new from o’reillys for about 180 $. It took maybe an hour tops to replace the supply pump. I would not recommend this place at all. They were trying to charge me for any and every penny that they could because they didn’t think that I knew what I was talking about. The worst service I have ever experienced.

After putting over 150,000 fun miles on our Town and Country we decided it was time to replace it with a new one. We did not hesitate to drive down to SJ Denham to checkout the newer models. In the past 12 years we have purchased two vans and have used their excellent service department
Our salesperson Mark was so kind in bringing us up to date in the latest technology of the auto world. We were so very impressed with our overall experience in purchasing a new Town and Country. Just bought my second Jeep from SJ Denham Jeep. It was a wonderful experience, hands down the easiest car buying experience EVER! I HATE buying new cars, as soon as I walk on a car lot my heart rate spikes and I get super defensive. In this case however, I called and told them what I wanted, we did most of the negotiations over the phone, and when I came in the process took about 25 minutes. I traded in my old Jeep, which I got a good price on and drove off in my new Jeep super happy. If you’re in the market for a new car go see Ryan Denham and Mark Cross they will treat you right.

Been coming to S. J. Denham for 3 years now. Good service, although they lost their best service provider, Dale.
I tend to wait for my car during simple oil changes, and while the service is done promptly, their waiting area leaves a LOT to be desired. For longer repairs… well, I don’t recommend it.
Six chairs are crammed into a space about 7′ by 12′ (I might be generous), along with a small table, a coffee station, and a Lego play table. You’re knee-​to-​knee with the other poor souls stranded or waiting.
The backs of 2 vending machines make up part of one wall, and the refrigeration fan in one blows hot air into the waiting space, boosting the temp uncomfortably – not a help in Redding!
Wi-​Fi? Nope. Hey, S. J., this is 2014!
I’ve been in several dealerships over the years, and this is at the bottom of the welcoming scale. You’d think in the three years I’ve been coming that things would have improved at S. J. Denham. You’d be wrong. Disappointing they don’t pay a little more attention to customer comfort. Nice people, but a little clueless.

Have a brand new Corolla and someone smashed into the back bumper on Lk. Blvd. as we were sitting waiting for the light to change. Big Old Buick left a scar of their license plate frame in my bumper and a couple of small holes… The insurance company for the Buick people was great (Progressive) they were on the phone with me within an hour or so and had a rental set up, and gave me two choices in Redding to have the car fixed that they do business with (or choose my own) I chose S.J. Denham and I’M glad I did. They repaired the bumper and repainted the area that was damaged so well, you would not ever know that it was damaged… and it comes with a 100% guarantee for the life of the car (my ownership) Thanks to all, for a job well done.

A truly stand up operation. I purchased a certified used 2011 dodge grand caravan here. That was a very good experience. After I had a lot of brake issues with the dodge. SJ Denham took care of the front brakes with a special fix from dodge since there was a known issue causing front brakes to warp rotors. Few months later the back brakes go bad wearing only the inner pads and warping the rotors. Dodge warranty would not cover but they do sell a fix for the known issue! This fix would have cost me big $ but the good guy Ryan Denham took that cost, since I had all these issues with brakes, and I only had to pay for new pads. They are truly stand up guys for customer service. Wish I could say the same for Dodge warranty.

We took one of our work trucks to SJ Denham yesterday to have new tires installed. We had an appointment and they got the truck right in. While it was there we had them do some routine maintenance on it. We really like that they can do the maintenance while the tires are being changed. It saves us from having to take a work truck out of service for longer then needed, and saves us from having to run it around to other shops.
This was the third vehicle in the last couple months that we have had them put tires on. The service is always awesome. After each visit they have followed up to make sure we were absolutely happy with everything, and without a doubt I can say yes.

I’m driving down Buenaventura. Windows down. Music up. Loving the day. Out of the corner of my eye I see a little brown head pop up between the fender and hood. YIKES! A mouse! Never expected to see that.
Okay people, this seems to be a common problem in our town. Check your garages for mouse poop (check the corners and floors along the walls). If you’ve got mouse poop in the gee-​rodge then you probably have Mickey and Minnie Mouse taking up residence and procreating in your car or truck. A friend recently paid 3 grand to repair damage mice had done to the heating and air conditioning system in her Lexus. You wanna pay attention here.
So, SJ Denham… I immediately drove their shop to have the truck checked for mice and possible damage. The guys found some mouse poop but no damage. Whew! Dodged that bullet. Went home, vacuumed up all the mice poop on the floor and on the shelves, and put out bait and traps. No more mice poop. The bait and traps stay put as that ounce of prevention.
Then two truck batteries last month from SJ Denham. Best price in town.
Soon after that came an issue with one of the truck doors not closing all the way. The wind buffeting through the door was driving me crazy. SJ Denham’s body shop didn’t bother estimating what it would cost to repair the problem.…they just took the truck into their shopand fixed the problem without charge. Wow. Talk about old school business practices!
SJ Denham smogged the truck last week. ½ hour, the truck passed smog and I was out the door.
The good: Honest, friendly hometown people you can trust. It’s apparent they value their customers.
The bad: Limm’s is just down the street. You could gain a few pounds and clog a couple of arteries by spending time scarfing up on Chinese while waiting for your car to be repaired. Fix one problem (your vehicle), create another.
Sigh. Such is life.

This review is in regards to the Collision Center… we unfortunately were acquainted with the Collision Ctr after a car accident. Everyone we came into contact with was caring and helpful and made the experience easier to deal with (also see my review of the Hertz Rental at this same location). They kept us up to date on the status of our car in a very timely manner.

I recently purchased my 5th vehicle (7th in my family) from the Denhams and I have to say that they make one’s car buying experience smooth. Everyone is friendly, there is no pressure, and you won’t hear from haggling car salesmen everyday if you don’t make your purchase on your visit. They have a great selection of vehicles available and if they don’t have what you’re looking for in stock, they can get it for you. Don’t waste your time going anywhere else, make this your first stop, it will be your last!
