History

Established in 1960.

Al and Bea Davis opened a small antique and used furniture store at 1601 University Avenue in 1960. After several years, they started selling quality new furniture from manufacturer’s catalogs. They added more and more companies and also carpeting, window coverings and mattresses. Al Davis Furniture has sold Simmons Beautyrest and Aireloom Handcrafted mattresses for many years as well as other fine mattresses. ALL price ranges are offered, from very moderately-​priced ones to the finest mattresses with organic cotton, pure wool and 100% organic latex rubber.

I started working with my parents at their furniture store, Al Davis Furniture, while I was in school. My father and I would deliver furniture after he closed the store. We would sometimes get home after 10:00 PM! I started Mattress World in 1980 after I saw that we could offer all price ranges of mattresses at discounted prices LOWER then the big chain stores and the department stores. We still have greatly discounted prices on all types of beds, from our $ 99.00 and $ 129.00 types up to our $ 4,000 models.

I have a wife, Antonia, who is an artist in San Diego, a daughter, Sarah, who is a local certified, licensed midwife, and a son in Berkeley who works for SunPower, a large solar panel manufacturer.

So very happy with my new kitchen table. Its perfect and the quality of the wood is fantastic. The assembly was quite simple as well. There were so many selections to choose from and so many styles.

Hello,
I’m writing this on behalf of my 83 year old «off-​the-​grid» (no PC) mother who just culminated an awesome post-​sale /​customer care interaction with Bob at this business. After recently ordering a mattress here she had some issues after literally «sleeping on it for awhile» with regards to firmness level.
As she really is conflict-​averse, she was dreading fighting with Bob, but just called me SO happy about his absolutely WONDERFUL business manner in attending to her most of the morning to find a firmer /​higher-​end mattress she is much more comfortable on.
In the end all seems a win-​win for both her getting the firmness she needs… and Bob selling an upgraded unit; prompting me to write this. I sure hope this review gains him more much-​deserved customers as well.

I kinda already knew what I wanted before I came in here but I really loved the low-​key, no hassle approach. I really felt like there was no pressure and Bob was really great to work with.
They have a small showroom but there is a lot you can order from this place and Bob was really informative. Great discounts and very accommodating as I made a last min change. I highly recommend this place. Looking forward to the new bed frame!

I purchased a mattress from Al Davis Mattress World in May 1993. It was a top of the line Seally Posturepedic pillow top. I went back in April 2015 to get a new mattress. I wanted a new Seally because my 22 year old Seally was still in great shape. Bob said he quit selling Seally since their quality was not now the same.
We ended up purchasing an Aireloom Aireloom Natori Luxetop Plush mattress. Bob knows his product well and does not pressure you to buy. The new mattress was delivered just as he said, on time and wrapped in plastic. I checked online to compare prices on the mattress and could not find it anywhere cheaper. His showroom may not be flashy, but you do save on price purchasing from him. No need to spend money advertising when you have content returning customers.
After just one night sleeping on the new mattress, we cannot believe how comfortable it is. Although the old mattress was still comfortable, there is no comparison to the new one.

i echo the positive reviews and had a great experience. i was in the market for mattresses for both myself and my son, and we ended up getting both mattresses as well as platform storage bed frames there. bob was very low key and provided lots of helpful information. never felt pressured. delivery was very quick. when i discovered i had ordered the wrong size mattress for the bed frame, i was able to quickly make an exchange for the right sized mattress. prices were good and we are sleeping very well!

I had a great experience at Al Davis Furniture.
My in-​store experience was great. The sales approach was low-​key, no hassle and no pressure — perfect for me. I told them the size of the bed (queen), my material preference (all-​wood, no laminate), the price (under $ 1k) and general looks I liked (mission, low-​profile). The first bed they showed me was perfect and the bed I ultimately purchased. I also browsed some other in-​store models and the catalogs for comparison.
I previously explored the models at Living Spaces, but found their prices for all-​wood beds were about 50% more than the models I liked at Al Davis Furniture. The bed I ultimately purchased is made in the USA by The BedWorks of Maine, and the North American Ash it’s made of is a sustainable and renewable hardwood.
The bed came in last night, and it is beautiful! I didn’t opt for assembly, but it was easy and took only about 1.5 hours to unpack, assemble and clean up. The assembled frame is solid and the craftsmanship is beautiful.
From beginning to end, I have been very happy with my purchase and the buying experience. I will recommend Al Davis Furniture and Mattress World to my friends and will be back the next time I’m in the market for furniture. Thanks for a great experience!

Great service and great location! The warehouse for the mattresses are right behind the store, so you can pick up your mattress that same day. They also have reasonable delivery prices as well. My boyfriend and I asked a lot of questions before buying and Bob was able to answer them all for us. This was a really positive buying experience. I would highly recommend this place. It was such a relief to be greeted in a store by a knowledgable sales person who is genuine, and not trying to just make a sale.

We bought a mattress from Bob Davis. He was genuine, honest and upfront with advice. We appreciate they are local and are a business with some heart. Our mattress was in stock and delivered same day. Even the gentleman who delivered the mattress was super friendly and accommodating. We plan to definitely return with some additional furniture purchases.

We were looking for a latex mattress. They have a very good selection. Bob was very knowledgeable and helpful. We ended up with a super firm mattress made of latex and coconut. If you have lower back pain (like me), ask about this model. I have not woken up with back pain since getting this mattress.

Buy from Bob
Bob at Al Davis furniture went out of his way to make things right for us after a disappointing experience with a bed frame we purchased.
The manufacturer of the bed we ordered poorly packaged the pieces and FedEx damaged the boxes on two separate attempts. We accepted damaged boxes on Bob’s advise against our better judgement. The wood was damaged and the hardware provided was not adequate to assemble the bed frame. One barrel nut was not drilled out wide enough and ruined several of the bolts. Also, the wing nuts did not fit the carriage bolts so the headboard could not be attached. In addition the slats we received were spaced farther apart than what we ordered.
Unfortunately we could not assemble or use the bed frame and had to try and sleep on the floor last night. Bob had his guys come right over the next morning to pick up the bed and he issued us a full refund, which was very helpful and made up for the inconvenience.
It is unfortunate that the bed was not packaged better and that the delivery service was not more careful. Bob Davis quickly made sure we were taken care of. The service at Al Davis Furniture and Mattress World is exceptional and I highly recommend them.

I purchased a mattress three months ago (650.00 + tax and 75.00 for delivery) and it is of very poor quality. After just 3 months the mattress provides no support. I called to see if they would do anything. give me a refund, or a discount on a new mattress and they don’t provide that level of service.
Buyer beware! I’d purchase a mattress for more elsewhere where quality products are sold and the company stands behind what they sell. I’m out almost 800.00.

Went to the store after hearing they carry organic mattresses with no chemical flame retardants. Thought they were very pleasant to deal with. I tried all the beds to see which I liked and never felt rushed to decide. I like buying from a small local business and to top it off the bed was delivered earlier than expected and the delivery people were just as nice as the people in the store!

I went in with champagne taste on a beer budget, as per usual. Fortunately, Mr. Davis was there to walk me through the differences between quality of beds for the price. In essence, he was extremely helpful in getting me the most bang for my buck. In fact, he gave me a bit of a break & the mattress I ultimately chose is excellent. It’s been the better part of a year and still firm & comfy as the day I bought it, (and I’m sorta chubby, so that’s sayin’ something). Superb quality for a very reasonable price. Another thing I like about Mr. Davis is he doesn’t give you the smarmy, commission-​driven «how much crap can I sell you today?» routine. You come in for a bed. He asks you some particulars & explains the options he has available. You either buy a bed … or you don’t. Period. Easy-​peasy, lemon-​squeezy. He’s not at all rude, but he won’t kiss your ass either. I liked him immediately.
Ok, so having said all that… I do strongly suggest that you NOT rely on his delivery «service». That dude charges way too much and is kind of a jerk. You’re better off borrowing a friend’s truck and hauling it yourself.
Summary: would I reccomend Al Davis Furniture? YES! would I use the delivery guy again? Nope.
