At Coastal Paws we believe a pet should be a well balanced member of the family. We specialize in behavioral adjustment, obedience and therapy dog training using an assertive and loving approach. Coastal Paws also understands that sometimes life can get complicated with long work hours and travel by offering top of the line dog walking, field trips, doggy daycare, and cage free dog boarding/​pet sitting services at rates that are affordable for everyone. Our pets are family and we take pride in providing an outstanding and exceptional service to our furry friends and their human counterparts.

History

Established in 2015.

Coastal Paws is the product of a lifelong passion for animals (dogs in particular), and a vision of how can an individual (s) make a positive impact in the lives of our four legged soul mates and their owners.

While volunteering in several rescues and shelters, we witnessed first hand how many pets where being surrendered due to either behavioral reasons, or not having enough time to properly care for them.

Our main focus and philosophy is to help pet owners in every and any way that we can and for pet owners to not feel as they are breaking the bank when requesting help to provide adequate care for their furry babies. Whether it is help with training their pets, caring for them while away or whatever else is of need, Coastal Paws is committed to provide those needs and do so at the highest level of professionalism, competence and training.

Business Owner

Mercedes is the owner and founder of Coastal Paws San Diego. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Mercedes grew up on a farm surrounded by all types of animals. An animal lover in heart and soul, she was particularly drawn to dogs. As a child, she would pick up stray dogs, bring them home and from that moment on, they became a permanent member of the family. She became fascinated with pack mentality and pack behavior and spent her free time reading and studying it. Along with her pack, she now places that understanding into practice at Coastal Paws. Mercedes truly loves to look after the pets under her care and takes her obligations very seriously. She is committed to provide an exceptional service in which the final goal is to always have well behaved puppy smiles and tail wags.

I came across Mercedes and Coastal Paws through a word-​of-​mouth reference a few months ago and she’s the best! She came highly recommended by a few other boarding companies. We took our German Shepard for boarding to try it out and Mercedes was very kind, informative, and patient with our overly active dog. She allowed us to even walk through and take a tour so that we would feel comfortable and answered all our questions without hesitations. Mercedes has a few fur babies of her own and they look always very happy and healthy. Prices are fair and affordable and our dog loves being there. I am very over protective of my fur babies and I don’t just leave them anywhere without fully reviewing where they are staying. I trust coastal paws with all of my babies and still take them to Mercedes to this day. I highly recommend them!

This is my mom’s review: «Coastal Paws SD is the BEST dog care in San Diego, hands down. My two active dogs had a blast being part of the Coastal Paws pack. I know that because Mercedes kept me updated with videos and pictures. They came home happy (not stressed out like other places). For my big babies, the difference is being in the house with people, not out in kennels, so it feels more like home. They got walks, treats, and a lot of affection. You can tell Mercedes and her family genuinely like each dog and take the time to get to know them. Coastal Paws is now my go-​to for dog boarding.»

I can’t rave enough about Mercedes and the experience at Coastal Paws. She started watching our little guy a couple of months ago and from the beginning we liked her philosophy. She definitely has the «pack mentality» thing down, which, in my opinion, works excellently for dogs since they usually work that way. She introduced our pup to the pack gradually, so when he went for daycare the first time he had no issues. We got to bring him over to meet some of the pack before his first day, as well, which helped a lot.
Boarding: We also boarded pup with her this past week, and boy, what a different experience than previous boarding. She didn’t kennel him, which is great because he a) sleeps with us usually, and b) is a nervous nelly. He has worn down his teeth from trying to get out of his kennel before, and no problems this time. He was tuckered out every day, and between the texts and instagram updates I could tell he was doing well. She came to check on the cats as well, which was great!
So, an amazing job done by Coastal Paws, and I trust my pup (and cats) with Mercedes hands down.

I went out of town for about 5 days during the thanksgiving holiday and needed to board my 2 year old very high energy boxer mix. I came across coastal paws and decided to meet Mercedes and her pack. I was so thrilled to hear that she doesn’t kennel dogs, and she does everything as a pack. I knew Duke would love it there. While I was gone Mercedes constantly posted pictures and videos so I could see what Duke was doing. He was having a blast! He loved being around so many dogs and I am so thankful that I found coastal paws! I will definitely use them again in the future!

My boyfriend and I adopted a rescue French bulldog back in February. They had told us that he was hearing impaired when we had actually adopted him but came to find out that he had over 90% hearing loss by the time we got him home. Needless to say training a deaf dog was proving to be quite a challenge. Mercedes came in and helped us establish a fantastic relationship and routine with our dog. We quickly eliminated the issues of him going to the bathroom in the house as well as were able to teach him basic commands such as sit and stay — all thanks to Mercedes! Additionally, because of Mercedes and her pack our pup is now super friendly with other dogs — no hesitation or anxiety like we had first encountered when we brought him home. She is professional and friendly– and the absolute best when it comes to training dogs. I have and will continue to refer her to anyone who has questions about their pups– from the most basic to extremely challenging– she’s got it all down!

Mercedes of Coastal Paws is the closest person I know to a dog whisperer lol she has the biggest heart for our dog Rufus. She connected with him seamlessly making it an easy decision in finding someone to care for and train him. We rescued him as a pup, early enough to train him for our home but too late for some of the fear & pain the streets had shown him already. Mercedes engaged him in such a way that you can see he immediately felt the safety she made him feel in her. She’s taught us how to read his behavior and how to interact with him according to the training she gave him aside from all the kisses & hugs we at times overwhelm him with. Because of his early vagabond days on the street before we rescued him he was not much of a social dog. When we took him to a dog park he’d be in the corner tucking his tail and backing away from other dogs wanting to play with him. Mercedes does such a great job in socializing all her 4 legged VIPs that Rufus is not as socially awkward anymore. That gives us the peace of mind to now board him when we travel whereas before we felt we had to have someone house/​dog sit to keep him at home so he’d be ok. Needless to say, Mercedes of Coastal Paws has become an extension of our family.

We’ve been boarding our two dogs, Maggie and Chili Bean, with Mercedes for almost a year now and have been so happy with the TLC she gives them. They love staying there and go bananas as soon as we pull into her neighborhood.
It’s like a vacation for them — they get to play with other dogs and enjoy a big backyard! We know they are well taken care of because they always come home pooped!
We have peace of mind leaving them with her, especially since Maggie has alpha tendencies. We never worry though and in fact she’s helped Maggie become more social.
I would recommend Coastal Paws in a heartbeat!

Mercedes is absolutely amazing with my two pups! I have a 2 year old Pointer mix (who had separation anxiety and confidence issues) and a 4 year old Yorkie. I had previous issues leaving them home alone with accidents and barking but she has trained them better than I could have ever imagined. The pointer, Sophie, had confidence issues being in new places and among new people but now it is as though those issues never existed. Mercedes is truly a blessing and I never worry when I go out of town and they’re under her care! Plus, my dogs love to socialize now so it’s always like a play-​day for them whenever they get to see Mercedes and her pups (Jagger, Achilles, and Kenso).

Mercedes has been walking Buddha for almost a year and she does an awesome job. She is reliable and trains my dog Buddha while they walk. 2 thumbs up from me.
