History

Established in 1923.

Custom Awning & Canvas is the oldest awning shop in San Diego. Formerly Acme Awning, the business opened its doors in 1923 in the heart of North Park (a historic craftsman’s neighborhood). Englishman John Woods purchased Acme Awning in 1985 & is synonymous with quality & long standing commitment to the trade.

So happy with my awning from Custom Awning & Canvas. They were prompt, professional, and delivered even better than I could’ve imagined. They are artists when it comes to custom awnings and I’m so grateful I found them. I priced around as well and they were the most affordable. Also, their team that installed the awning was so sweet and kind and did an amazing job. All around super happy and would highly recommend them!

Called to get an estimate as a result of a recent windstorm and the guy says he’s really busy but if I walk out to the middle of the street and take a picture of my storefront and email it to him he’d be able to give me a quote. Should have known when it starts out by asking me to do his job for him it’s a bad deal. No return email and now nobody answered the phone. I guess I dodged a bullet because I’m sure the quality of the awning would probably match the quality of service.

Wow, what a strange experience we had with the owner of Custom Awning & Canvas. He arrived, on time, for our first meeting to go over our proposed project for awnings and sun sails. He took photos, I gave him a site plan with dimensions, he made suggestions… it all went well. He left saying he would get an estimate to us by the following Wednesday. Wednesday came and went. I called him on Friday and he apologized and said he’d like to have an associate look at the site before giving an estimate. He’d schedule that in a day or two. Again, no word from him. Called AGAIN… he said he was with a customer and would call back when finished. Never called back. That was a month ago.

Unfortunately this was a terrible experience. They kept on delaying the delivery over and over again, the owner I believe J. W gave me his word and then vanished. Think twice unless you have a lot of time to waste.

I LOVE John and Custom Awning & Canvas. I needed to replace my 15 yr old canvas and called the company that put them in… the price was just ridiculous. I was going to buy the canvas and do it myself. I then found John and he gave me a very fair price. His staff is very nice and professional and the quality is top notch! Thank you! Eric

The installation began with a prompt, extremely courteous and most enjoyable consultation with Mr John Woods, the owner of Custom Awning. The awning itself was ready much sooner than we expected and the actual installation was very quick and minimally disruptive. It has transformed our building. I’d gladly dress up every window that I own for the pleasure of dealing with Mr Woods and his team.

These guys did two separate installations in our backyard. We could not be more pleased with their suggestions, installation, and service. The owner came out and personally handled the up front business (design decisions, suggestions, time line). Further more, a year later when we did some slight damage in cleaning the patio cover, John sent someone out to repair it for us (free!).
