We are dedicated to making your experience at our office as comfortable as possible.

Dr. Stephen H. Munroe is a board-​certified periodontist who specializes in tooth extraction, gum grafting, gum reduction, dental implants, periodontal surgery, and bone grafting. He is also certified to administer I.V. Sedation to help ease the anxiety of our patients.

Dr. Munroe and the staff at Hillcrest Periodontics work with a network of general dentists and specialists to provide comprehensive and individualized care to each and every patient.

Our staff includes gentle, experienced hygienists, who maintain our patients’ dental and periodontal health through scaling and root planing (deep cleanings) and routine dental cleanings.

Our new, state-​of-​the-​art office includes a digital 3D x-​ray scanner used as a diagnostic tool to customize patient treatment.

At your first visit, you will meet Dr. Munroe and he will take a look at the areas of concern, as well as any pertinent x-​rays. Then, he will give you treatment recommendations and explain the procedures to you, as well as answer any questions you may have. You will also meet with our treatment coordinators who will help you navigate your insurance and treatment plan.

Business Owner

Dr. Stephen H. Munroe was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. He completed his undergraduate education at McGill University and went on to Howard University in Washington D.C. to become a dentist. Dr. Munroe then made his way to the west coast to become a periodontist completing his studies at University of Southern California.

Dr. Munroe enjoys spending time with his family and two dogs, Diego and Sota. When he is not in the office, you can find him brewing beer, playing baseball, or enjoying a Padres game with friends.

I recently went to Dr. Munroe for some work. I needed a my wisdom teeth removed and put it off for years due to a previously horrible experience with a dental professional. The staff is awesome and nice, they made me feel super comfortable and I was able to get sedated, which basically made it like it didn’t even happen. I’m very grateful for everything and would recommend to anyone.

Dr. Munroe is a phenomenal periodontist. He has an amazing staff that take a genuine interest in the well-​being and care of the patients. Dr. Munroe and his hygienists/​assistants will make sure you feel comfortable and are receiving top-​level care. They go above and beyond to ensure an excellent experience.
It can be difficult to find a reliable and trustworthy dentist. I recommend to Dr. Munroe to all my friends and family in the San Diego area, or beyond. I moved to Los Angeles in January and make the drive to SD for all my dental work, which has ranged from normal cleaning check-​ups to emergency last-​minute oral surgery.

They really know how to take care of their patients. I arrived 15 minutes earlier for my appointment and 3 minutes later Jessica checked me in with Denise the dental hygienist. Denise really took the time to clean my teeth thoroughly & made me feel comfortable. Before I new it poommmm baby I’m showing my White teeth to the world again. Easy breezy experience

Dr. Munroe and his staff have been so accommodating, made me feel at eased and made sure that I would be taken cared of. The staff were all professional, knew what they were doing and answered all my questions. I would refer this place to anyone.

I have come to this location multiple times, the staff and doctors are all very nice and helpful. Normally leave this place feeling very satisfied, the only reason I am giving this place a 3 is due to a phone conversation I had today with one of their receptionist.
A few months ago I scheduled, over the phone, two separate appointments. Today I received a follow up call that my appt is tomorrow. Since I had scheduled the appointment my work schedule had changed and the time no longer worked for me. Knowing how busy this place is I asked to reschedule in November, the lady on the phone asked if I need to reschedule in the future to be sure to call 48hrs ahead of time because now she is not able to fill my time slot for tomorrow. I asked her to set my reminder calls for 48 hrs before my appointment going forward. she said that the calls are only a courtesy and I should pay attention to the card that was filled out and given to me. Scheduling over the phone I was never given a card, she proceeded to talk over me and explain further in depth and I requested she just schedule me at a later time.
No available slots in Nov or Dec for what I needed so we moved to Jan. Find the days that work and go to get me scheduled, she asks if I want the same time of day, 3pm… I advised her, again, the reason I am changing the appt. is because of my new schedule not working with that time. I asked if I could do 315 or 330? She responded that 3 is the latest and refused to offer me any other option beside finding a different doctor who is willing to work with me and my schedule.
Hopefully they weed this one out because everyone else here is pretty great and willing to help.

I have a fear of dentistry. Going to any type of dental care has always given me anxiety. So when I was told I needed a periodontal surgery; I had a melt down. I was referred to Dr Munroe and I’ve never been happier with my dental care. His front desk is knowledgable, professional, and friendly. Dr Munroe is so personable I feel like I’m seeing a friend not a Periodontist. Also the end result after surgery is fabulous! Also he spends weeks after surgery insuring everything is healing well. I couldn’t be more happy and urge anyone who needs a Periodontis to see Dr. Munroe!

I was referred to Dr. Munroe by my current dentist to get a gum graft done. I used to hate going to the dentist and my expectations are pretty high whenever I go to a new dentist now. Dr. Munroe and his team were amazing! I was a tiny bit nervous for this procedure until I came in the office and they explained everything. His dental assistant was awesome, I wish I remembered her name! Both Dr. Munroe and his assistant made me feel at ease and the procedure went by quickly. I highly recommend this office!

I was referred to Dr. Munroe by my dentist to get some gum grafting done. My first appt with Dr. Munroe was awesome. His staff was all super friendly and did their best to put me at ease. I felt like the procedure and what I was «in for» were explained very well to me in a way I could actually understand. Jen at the front desk was so awesome and thorough in dealing with my insurance and getting me all the info I needed. I went in and had the procedure done and while the procedure itself is miserable I was taken care of sooooo well by everyone in this office! They made sure I was taken care of, sent me home with more than enough after care supplies and followed up with me. My follow up appt was mainly with The dental assistant and she was super patient with me being so sensitive and whiny. I would highly recommend this office for any of your speciality dental needs.

Years after multiple bone grafts and oral surgeries to place implants by a different oral surgeon, I noticed a dark shadow under my gums. I was referred to Dr. Munroe by a friend who had seen him in the past and was very happy with his work. I have much anxiety at the dentist especially when it comes to any invasive work such as periodontal work but Dr. Munroe was awesome, he alleviated so much of my anxiety with his professionalism, knowledge and friendly staff.
The staff really is awesome as well, the front office girls are great and very helpful! Because I had such a great experience with his office, I started seeing his Dental Hygienists Deja. She’s great! I used to do everything I could to avoid going to get my teeth cleaned, but after I started seeing Deja I actually look forward to getting my teeth cleaned now, she’s very knowledgeable, gentle and fantastic at what she does, my teeth always look so sparkly when I leave! If anyone is looking for an all around awesome office I’d absolutely recommend these guys.

I had such a good experience I had to sign up for a Unilocal account! I actually work for a general dentist and had really high expectations going in. Dr. Munroe honestly went above and beyond them all. I went in for a cosmetic procedure to correct the gum line around my two front teeth. My dental consultation and procedure appointment were both the best dental experiences I have ever had. I was really scared on the day of treatment and Dr. Munroe was the most gentle dentist ever!!! I didn’t even feel the injections! He told me exactly what he was doing and what to expect. At the end, he showed me what he had done and I was amazed at how perfect it already looked. His staff are really informative and Krystal was a great assistant! I left the office with a post-​operative tooth brush, pain medication and an ice pack! They really take care take of you :) Dr. Munroe is honest and great at what he does, the office is clean and beautiful, parking is convenient, and the staff is friendly.

I had an urgent dental matter to take care of, and Dr. Munroe and his staff were courteous and efficient, and his work was meticulous. I am a dentist’s kid, but my family is out of state. Aside from them, I wouldn’t rest my care in any other hands than Dr. Munroe’s. An added plus was everyone’s exemplary hygiene and the attractive soothing environment.

I went here only because my insurance gave me a discount. The office and staff were nice. I needed to have gum grafting however, I ran out of here as soon as Dr Munroe began telling me that my gums had receded severely because my lips were too big and they were irritating my gums. And then he went on to say that my gums were thin because I was thin and that fat people have fatter gums. Just didn’t make sense to me. I’ve since gone to another periodontist.

Dr Munroe and his staff are the BEST! My whole family goes to this office for dental help. My teeth were not in the best shape since i had two kids 19 months apart and i sometimes forgot to brush… a major NO, NO. My gums and teeth were so sensitive and hurt sometimes just to chew. It has taken about 6 months of deep cleanings (all practically pain free i may add) and patience on their part, but they have corrected my begining stages of gum disease and have helped me to teach my children about good dental health. Dr. Munroe even took time out to show me how to brush my 18mo old sons teeth so that he will stop screaming and want to brush every day and night. You do not find this type of personal continued service anymore! Thank you to the entire staff for making this entire expirence so easy!

I had such a great experience with my tissue grafts — he really explained how the procedure would work. I felt like he listened to my concerns and really took the time needed to make me comfortable.
Dr.Munroe’s assistants really made me feel at ease during the procedure. The staff are all so friendly! When I had my followup appointments Dr. M continued to offer the best quality of care. I am telling all my friends to see him if they need to see a periodontist!

Umm… I was referred here by my dentist for «deep pockets» in my gums. From what I can figure it means that the scary hook tool that the dentist has goes too far down into my gums when they poke it. I was in a lot of pain and excited to be finally taking care of it. YeahNo!!!
Cute office, they were playing Lenny Kravitz, and the receptionist was super nice. Dr. Munroe is really nice and so was his staff so that was cool.
Why did I leave my appt nearly in tears? WELL! I was given no pain medication, no prescriptions at all in fact despite voicing several times I was in so much pain I could barely eat or swallow my own saliva (gross I know). I was given a $ 10 tube of toothpaste to pay for and told I had to come back for deep cleanings that would total $ 680 every month for 3 months!!! Even another doctor said it sounded like a rip off. Luckily I had jury duty so I had to cancel my appts.

LOVE DR. MUNROE & ENTIRE STAFF!
I had to see Dr. Munroe for some tissue grafting on 3 of my teeth. I am a dental wuss but he (with the help of some Valium) put me completely at ease. The procedure was relatively easy and pain free, and now I have a beautiful gum line.
His staff is equally as amazing. Each one of them is caring and gentle. All of my questions were answered quickly and accurately. Dr. Munroe has surrounded himself with a great group of ladies.
Dr. Munroe and his staff did a fantastic job and I cannot recommend or thank them enough.

Dr. Munroe and his staff are amazing! I have been a patient there twice now over the past few years, and have truly enjoyed the experience (minus the reason I was there, of course, but how many periodontists make you forget that? They almost did!)
I agree with the other reviewer about pain elimination: Dr. Munroe doesn’t play around. He performed my extraction and subsequent implant, plus a recent frenectomy, and the ensuing follow-​up was caring and professional in every way. Adrienne in the office is one sharp cookie with all the knowledge — I was never put on hold so she could get an answer for me — she just knows it all so well, from insurance questions to procedures. Appointments are super easy to get (it’s such an efficient operation) and the after-​care for surgical patients is wonderful, and they are exceptional «people» people. I would not hesitate for one moment to recommend Dr. Munroe and his team. (I was referred by Dr. Sabine Purps, another like-​minded professional who knows how to run a business and keep clientele happy.)
One fun note: Their waiting room is filled with the best selection of current magazines ever! Kudos to whomever handles that, even though I have never had to spend much time waiting there. :)

Dr. Munroe is great! I would highly recommend him to anyone that is in need of a periodontist. I was referred to him by one of my dentist friends. I had a crown lengthening procedure and I found the whole experience from beginning to end top notch. Dr. Munroe is a really cool guy and makes you feel very comfortable. He was also very good at checking how I was doing with my pain levels during the procedure. Considering he was sawing away at my gums, it was surprisingly pain-​free! Also big props to the rest of the staff (I had follow up appointments for a year and half)… everyone who works there is very friendly and professional. One of Dr. Munroe’s assistants (I think her name is Daisa (sp?)) was so nice and always very pleasant to talk to.
Quick and easy validated parking downstairs, cool music played in the office and never had to wait for appointments. I am very pleased with how my gums healed and the level of care I received. Been to a lot of dentists and doctors in my life and Dr. Munroe rates up there at the top of the pack.
