J & S Service Company

This is the second time I’ve had J and S Service company repair our very expensive Uline refrigerator. The first was in 2010. Nick was the repairman. He fixed the problem right away. So when I recently had a problem I called them out again. Nick told the part was very expensive, and the labor would be also… and it was. But I have this very expensive appliance, and it’s worth repairing. My next door neighbor told me she just had her 3^rd Uline go bad!
So I asked Nick to do the work. He did… but he had to come back 4 times to work with this Uline… and found that it had a leak that he hadn’t found. Nick was professional from the beginning, he’s been working on appliances for 40 years, he is absolutely honest. We all know that these appliance people can create more $$$ problems because most of us don’t know. I appreciate him sticking with this to the finish. He did not up the price, and never once complained about coming back! He’s one of the good guys! Hard to find these days!

Long story short — they told me they could repair the dishwasher for a fee of 290+ dollars. I told them that I could replace for maybe another 200 more — so the question was — would they guarantee the work. She said yes.
After paying them, 4 visits, plenty of waiting around, and some pretty unpleasant interactions with the owner — they told me that they would finish the job for another $ 200+ dollars. I explained to them the original justification for having them «repair» the unit was based on their promise to repair for less than the cost of buying a new unit.
I got no traction with my complaint and am thankful that I can at least share their disreputable behavior with the world via Unilocal!Thanks.

My experience was similar to the first review on this page: Asko dryer not working, service man very prompt and extremely knowledgeable, fixed the problem quickly while teaching me how to use these weird Swedish dryers more successfully, he didn’t smell, etc.
I can’t believe some of the bad reviews. I wonder if it all depends on which technician you get. Well, mine was great! It was pricey though: $ 182. At least I think that’s pricey. I’m not sure because I don’t get my dryer repaired very often! But it was worth it to me because our dryer problem was driving us crazy.

Based on the reviews, I think this company has things that it excels at and things it does really poorly. To balance out the negative reviews, I thought I would describe my good experience with them.
Not 5 stars — First thing is first, this is not a *luxury* company. You are calling them most likely to fix a machine that rich people would just throw away. I, like you, am on a budget and cannot afford to replace $ 200 appliances every month. I had to drop off my Danby dishwasher that was still under warranty to them; they were the authorized repairmen. The office is shady; the entire experience is shady. The company is literally in a back alley garage. If you don’t like shady, then pay more to replace the appliance.
The attendant was not at the place when I came, which was annoying. However, she did everything correctly with my Danby warranty, and she held my hands through the submission process. It was incredible service, minus a lecture or two about how I treated my dishwasher. I knew that I treated it poorly, but I also knew that it should be able to take a little poor handling.
Danby obviously didn’t have the part; it’s a $ 200 dishwasher: DANBY DOESN’T CARE ABOUT $ 200 APPLIANCES. So, J & S made $ 84 inspecting it, I cashed in my warranty, and am now waiting for their approval to send my dishwasher.
I can’t say anything about the other services, but if you have to drop off your under warranty appliance to them, you don’t have anything to worry about. They will fix it or they will work with you to replace it. I’m not sure I would hire them/​trust them to fix an incredibly expensive appliance (based on other reviews), but I am the type of person that would never waste thousands of dollars on an appliance (unless it was REALLY energy efficient). So, if you’re in my shoes, don’t fret, they will help you!

No, I cannot recommend them.
Technician was very cocky, abrupt, and difficult to speak with over the phone. Plus wanted too much money for a simple repair that takes 10 min to do. I’m not experienced enough to do it, which is why I contacted them to do the repair. But with a bad attitude over the phone, and cockiness I’m not interested.

I think the same repairman came out for my Premier oven as noted in gigi’s comment below. He was extremely prompt, quickly identified the problem, fixed it, tested it, and gave me a general education about how the oven is supposed to work. I don’t think it would be possible for the service call to have gone any better.

First, J&S technician Nick performed about 15 minutes worth of service on my clothes dryer (moisture sensor not working) and gave me some verbal advice regarding a problem with my dishwasher – which I corrected myself. For that, he charged me $ 170 – way too much! The repair to the dryer was unsuccessful. After about 5 dryer loads (over about a 45 day period – as I was out of town for most of that and was in the midst of a remodel – which made use of the dryer difficult), I discovered that the moisture sensor problem had not been resolved. I called J&S Customer Service representative Michelle. She informed me that the warranty period for service was 30 days and that they would not stand behind their repair – in spite of the high cost and the extenuating circumstances. I asked to speak to her supervisor. She told me (literally) that she did not have a supervisor and that she was accountable to no one. She put me on hold for 20 minutes and then hung up the phone. Over the next 30 minutes, I called back several times asking to speak to her supervisor. She was completely disrespectful and she repeatedly hung up the phone. This person should be fired. Every customer of this company should find another service provider so that this company will go out of business.
Do yourself a favor – and find another appliance repair company!

I had a problem with my ASKO washing machine and J & S were on the authorized technicians’ list. My first contact was with the receptionist/​scheduler who sounded like she was having and off day. I asked her how soon she could send someone out and was told it would be Wednesday. I had an emergency and told her I needed someone out before this and would try elsewhere. I checked on the call-​out fee ($ 84) and moved on to the other company. I couldn’t get anyone sooner, their Unilocal rating was poor and the other company’s call-​out fee was higher, so I called back J & S to schedule. The receptionist was STILL not having fun and proceeded to reprimand me for not cleaning out the internal drain in my washing machine every 4 — 5 loads. Experience with European washing machines, since this is where I’m from, and with my ASKO in particular has suggested that this frequency isn’t necessary and it certainly doesn’t indicate this in my user’s manual.
The much-​awaited service day arrives but I had to run an errand first thing in the morning. On returning home, I made a quick call to J & S so they could give me a time frame when I could expect the technician. The receptionist continued to have trouble with life and when I asked what time I could expect the technician, snarled the response, that she’d just called and left me a voice mail message. To which I responded I’d been out and just got back in and didn’t know a voice mail awaited me but thanked her so VERY much for her help and effort.
Hoping that she was the only downer in the company, I waited for the technician. One look said it all — he didn’t smile or make eye contact when I met him. When I showed him the machine and explained the problem, he quickly told me what I’d already surmised and then proceeded to punch the buttons on my machine wildly and getting more and more frustrated with every attempt. I asked him if I could be of help and he told me to go ahead. I had to ask him what he was trying to accomplish. He didn’t know how to put the machine into the spin cycle. Once I did this he proceeded to tell me again what was wrong with my machine; when I answered I know, he replied in a heavily sarcastic and condescending voice «Oh you know do you?» Like, you are just a woman how could you possibly know this? I told him he’d just given the diagnosis 5 minutes beforehand. After this, he was less abrasive and more humble but it was an unpleasant interaction and I’m a little concerned about just how competent he will be to do the repair since he couldn’t muster up the knowledge to find spin! I have been in contact with ASKO to report my concerns but I also want to warn users in San Diego wear a Kevlar body suit and approach with caution!!!

I just HAD to write a review for this company.
They did several things that were great so I needed to share:
This is an appliance repair company and I needed to have them repair my ASKO dishwasher, which was new.
I had it installed a week earlier and it leaked when I used it.
ASKO sent this company to repair the problem (no cost to me).
They helped to arrange a time convenient to me.
#1 good thing:
J&S didn’t give me a ridiculous 4 hour window to sit around and wait for a repairman. I told them that I could be home for a couple of hours and when I was available. That was good for them and they arranged for that time.
#2 good thing:
The repairman (Nick) was ON TIME!
#3 good thing:
He didn’t smell bad or have a bad attitude :-)
#4 good thing:
He saw the problem and fixed it within 30 minutes, done!
He didn’t try to upsell or create a problem that wasn’t there.
He was HONEST!!! WOW! Who woulda thought that you could still find an honest company.
I am their new fan, thanks to the installer who did a bad job. Hee hee
