Business Owner

Juan comes from Colombian descent but was originally born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in between Colombia, Miami, Spain, and New York. At the age of 16, Juan was introduced to salsa music on the park playground, where his interest in salsa dancing began. From then on he began going out with his friends to local salsa clubs. Juan joined the United States Marine Corps at 18 where he was sent to serve two years in Okinawa, Japan. To his surprise salsa was very big within the Japanese community, which led him to continue with his dancing. He was transferred to San Diego in September of 1999, where his love for salsa dancing took off to another level.

In October of 2002 he was asked to join Majesty In Motion Dance Company, the largest and fastest growing salsa dance company in San Diego. In 2003 he decided to begin teaching salsa classes. Since then he’s taught and performed at numerous venues and private events in various cities around the United States, such as San Diego, Boston,

I started lessons with Juan months ago and look forward to his class every week. He has great energy and his classes are always fun. It’s a very accepting environment for beginners which is where I started. Everyone I’ve had contact with there from instructors to students are encouraging, patient and all enjoy a love to dance and a desire to share with others. I recently started his level 2 and level 3 classes and appreciate his patience and attention to technique. Specifically have liked how he points out how a lead is done and what it should mean for the female.

Regarding level one: I enjoy dancing and can pick up moves quickly. My bf on the other hand has no rhythm and 2 left feet. The pace of the class was too quick for him, but I would recommend to anyone to keep at it. My bf would need personal lessons as the group atmosphere could not give him the attention he needs. Even for a quick learner as myself, some of the 8 step count moves with spins were complicated and I thought it would have been nice to spend more time on them and actually have the instructor walk around with corrections. Unfortunately, the instructor and his 2 helpers did not walk around helping ppl. For level 1 there are 16 different steps that are taught, probably 3 or 4 are done at each session. He recommends that once you have done each step 3 times, then you are ready to advance.

As a newcomer to San Diego, I tried a few different instructors and studios. None were as detail oriented, comprehensive, or as fun as Juan’s lessons. Each class was well thought out and body movement was explained in a way that anyone could understand. In fact, I would say that many elements that were taught would probably only be taught in a private lesson. It’s true what they say – you get what you pay for.

I’m a total beginner, and Juan was great at not only making me feel comfortable, but also in giving me good advice on what to practice and not trying to fit too much in to a single lesson. He saved me from making a complete fool out of myself when I was in Cuba.

I have been attending Juan’s Principles & Techniques class & salsa on 1– level 2 for the past two months. His classes are great! I think it starts with the instructor (s) & if they have the passion to teach. Juan definitely has that passion. He takes the time to show you the basics & answer your questions. It can be intimidating taking classes for the first time but Juan makes you feel comfortable right away. He reminds you to keep smiling & most importantly, to have fun. My confidence in leading and coordinating my two left feet have improved. I highly recommend checking out Juan’s class & I guarantee you will not regret it. I have been to other studios & I keep going back to his class b/​c of the results.

Juan is incredible instructor, I had such a great experience learning salsa in his class. The best part is he breaks down the moves in an easy to understand way. I’ve gone to most salsa studios in San Diego and they all have their pros, but Juan is hands down my favorite salsa instructor. He brings energy and humor to every class, and Juanita (his alter ego) is pretty good too. There’s another instructor that I really liked at a different studio and I found out that Juan taught him!
Each class we learn a new pattern, and it’s easy to head over to prospect bar and practice it for then next hour on your partners. First class was free, so it’s worth coming to check out.

In those classes he breaks down the count for each instrument and leaves you with a better ear for the different beats layered in each song plus different shines for each instrument

I’ve been taking salsa lessons from Juan for almost a year now and it has been a very enjoyable and rewarding experience. He is super friendly and creates a comfortable and fun learning environment whether it be in workshops, group lessons, or privates. I have benefitted most in taking private lessons as Juan encourages me to think about my dance goals and continually challenges me as I progress. I really appreciate his attention to detail and focus on mechanics.
The physical activity, the appreciation of Salsa music & culture and the social aspect of learning to dance has made an incredible impact on my life and I’m very grateful to have found a teacher like Juan… I would highly recommend Salsa dancing and Juan to anyone!

My boyfriend and I are advanced beginner salsa dancers and we’ve been looking for someone to take lessons with for a long time since our last salsa teacher retired. We’ve finally found someone we like and the studio is in our part of town (15 minutes from Carmel Valley), Juan is a great teacher, he’s fun and breaks down the moves in an easy to understand way. The classes are affordable and at convenient times for us. We plan on taking a few group lessons and then adding private lessons to help us advance faster. I highly recommend Juan and his studio.

Juan is such a caring and charismatic instructor. He takes the time to make sure his students understand patterns, moves and the rationale behind all things salsa. Juan Two Three turned a bulky rugby-​playing athlete like me into a Salsa pro. I had watched some dancing on TV and thought it looked cool and decided to give it a shot. I was TERRIBLE. I couldn’t even get the basic step at first. Luckily, everyone in the class was just like me — I didn’t have to feel embarrassed at all! Juan’s a great teacher. He breaks everything down so it’s super easy to pick up. He starts with all the basics, and when you master those, you move to the next level where you get to pair moves together and really make your salsa dancing into something special. Juan is very easy going, always positive, and way encouraging. If you mess up (which we all do over and over again), it’s okay, «just smile.» And it’s not just Juan. He has multiple fellow teachers in every class, making sure you get all the attention you need, so you never get left behind. Bottom line, Juan took me, someone who has no dance experience at all, someone who’s totally insecure anywhere near a dance floor, and gave me a new hobby I love! — and quite a bit of dancing confidence now too. If only I had started earlier!

I have taken L1 6 week course of salsa dancing provided by Juan Hernandez as part of Qualcomm’s internal activity program QLiving. I absolutely loved the class. Juan is a professional dancer, but even more so, he is an excellent teacher. He is very charismatic and charges the whole group with good mood and makes the class really enjoyable. He is attentive to details of every person taking the course and always encourages the students in all possible ways. As a Qualcomm engineer I found this class to be a great way to maintain healthy work-​life balance, possibly the best one QLiving offers. I wish there were more publicity, so that more people would sign up for the class.

«Life is a series of 1000 of tiny miracles. — Mike Greenberg» And this is one of them. I got in to Juan’s salsa classes accidently –my friend introduced me to it. Since then, I am trying to make every class and enjoy every moment of the classes. Juan is a great teacher, he is encouraging, patient with his students :), he is able to explain every little detail of the move. He loves what he does, and he does it with a great sense of humor. I love the energy during the class. After all, we work during the day, and I personally want to have FUN, and Juan’s classes are so much fun. I not only will, but I am spreading the word out, I introduced my friend to Juan and soon she will be in our classes, now taking privates with Juan. After living in Kansas for nearly a year, my Salsa skills had waned a bit. However, after taking a few of Juan’s classes, I am getting back to my old self quickly. One of the challenges I have faced with other instructors is their ability to transfer knowledge. Juan is not only a phenomenal dancer, but he is an incredible teacher who can relate to people of all levels and backgrounds. He uses humor and wonderful analogies to convey exactly what he wants you to do.

I had been dating the same girl for five years and was ready to propose. She had danced salsa competitively while in undergrad and had always wanted me to learn how to dance. With that in mind, I decided to start taking lessons in secret so I could surprise her by proposing in a salsa club.
After conducting a pretty thorough internet search of the salsa instructors in the San Diego area, I decided to give Juan’s class a try. I’m glad I did.
His introductory level class is structured in such a way that you can jump in any week and not feel like you’re behind the curve. The first third of class usually focuses on the core basics of salsa (foot patterns and posture). The remainder of the class introduces students to a series of combinations that can be used in the club. There is no need to bring your own partner, as he rotates pairings pretty frequently.
His teaching style is high in energy and incorporates a lot of humor. If you take his group classes, you’ll learn quickly and you’ll have a lot of fun while doing it.
An added feature of his lower level classes is that he invites some of his more advanced students to help him teach. He usually has at least three other instructors with him for each group class. This keeps the student to teacher ratio pretty low. If you feel uncomfortable with a move, there is always someone nearby to help you.
After taking the group lessons for almost two months, I decided to start taking weekly private lessons from Juan. Although I had been progressing steadily in the group class, the private lessons helped me to improve much more rapidly. After a month of private lessons, I had progressed to Juan’s level two group class.
In the end, Juan’s instruction helped me to become a reasonably competent salsa dancer in a short amount of time. My girlfriend (now fiancé) was certainly impressed with what he had accomplished.
