The place is owned by a
charming young couple,
with wife Hadil running
the day-to-day operations.
They opened Vanoos a little
over three months ago, after
moving here from New
Jersey where they operated a
couple of small places with
a philosophy of serving the
best quality products. Now
they’re doing the same in
San Diego. Vanoos, which means butterfly in Greek, has a
simple menu that offers up some great appetizers, salads,
gourmet specialties, wraps, hot and cold deli sandwiches and
subs. What really stands out is that commitment to quality.
For instance, they only use Boar’s Head meats and cheeses
(including rib eye for the cheese steak sandwich). I enjoyed
this place right from the start when I took my first bite of
the amazing stuffed grape leaves. They’re filled with rice,
deliciously herbed ground beef (also available meatless), a
spritz of lemon and a drizzle of olive oil. The hummus and
the baba ghanouj eggplant spread are creamy fantastic; and
the tabuli is bursting with fres
