Waypoint Public

Walked right in on a Friday afternoon with a couple of friends and a gaggle of kids. There was a ‘seat yourself’ sign on the bar, which we happily did – right by the kids’ area in the corner. We had drinks and appetizers. The beer selection was good for an hop lover (I’m sure it was a good selection for lovers of other beer, I just can’t really speak to anything else as I only ever manage to pay attention to the IPAs). The appetizers were good… the Devils on Horseback were INSANE. Seriously, so good we ended up getting a second order. Which brings me to the best part about this place… The kiddie area! Genius! We had five kids under six with us, every single one of which had an absolute ball. They loved playing with the toys and taking breaks to eat before going back at it. I loved that my friends and I got to have quality food and drinks in an incredible atmosphere (that pallet wall!) without having to leave the kids behind or force them to sit and be still when it so goes against their natures. My kids have since asked to go back. Thanks to Waypoint, we got to have our cake and eat it too. Or beer, as the case was. My family would be here non-​stop if I were closer, as it is this is now a go-​to when we’re in SD.

I like the space. Cool bar and cool interior. There is a kids play area for your little nugget. When i came, service was suspect. I think they were understaffed for the lunch crowd. I was sitting at the bar and the bartenders were running back and forth to the tables. Let’s just say it did not work too well.
Although I was not drinking at the time, the beer list was a good one. I approve.
Now lets talk about the food. I ordered the turkey burger. This was meh. It was not good, it was not bad. The flavoring was kinda of bland. I was ambivalent regarding the BBQ sauce. The shoestring fries were not all that exciting.
I hear this is the spot for brunch. I may check it out for that. But for lunch, it was average.

One word. Meh.
Meh food, meh service, meh atmosphere. I hate that they don’t serve real drinks (only beer-​wine) and it’s always loud. Probably doesn’t help that there is a play pen for people to herd their children into while they grab a brew.
My blue cheese burger was alright, nothing special. My teammates salad was extremely spicy for no reason, and my friends mussels were bland. I actually had to throw my fries into her sauce to make it better. their ranch sauce is good. That’s all
I could see why this would be a chill spot for beer lovers or for a couple looking to get out with their kid (s). I love north park and (most of) its restaurants and bars, but I’ll need a cocktail or 5 to love Waypoint.

Had been quite a few times before with few options for vegetarians… shared some feedback and now I have to say there are plenty of options! We will be back regularly!

The hubs and I have been here a couple of times now and have really enjoyed it so far. The service is pleasant, food is great and they’ve got a nice, long beer list with something for every palate. I especially love the indoor/​outdoor feel with all the windows and the quirky «reclaimed» décor is well done. We’ll definitely be repeat customers while we’re living in San Diego.

Had dinner here with my man and his cousins who live in North Park over the weekend. For starters, we had the beer fried wings. We ordered the burgers, mussels and pork belly, brussel sprouts with bacon, etc. Pretty solid place. Our server was great! I’d come back here again.

I have tried this place three times in the last year, thinking the terrible service was an anomaly. I was wrong. Even if the place is nearly empty, expect to have to repeatedly remind the server that you ordered a beer. The bartenders are indifferent, and could care less about
you. I won’t be back.

The only reason I gave them a 2^nd star was for the décor. The food was over priced and not good! It’s actually odd food! The bloody beers and michiladas lack taste. Service was good, not great. Location wise, great– who doesn’t love Northpark?! I ordered the Hipster Hash– lacked everything except quinoa, that was all over it.
Think twice and check menu before coming, it may not be for you!

The food is very good here! I enjoyed the warm goat cheese kale salad with meyer lemon vinaigrette. Also had the waypoint burger with egg bacon and avocado. Absolutely delicious and juicy, meat patty was nicely seasoned. I also tried a few bites of the palang curry vegetables very good got too spicy if you avoid the jalapenos, still lots of nice flavor and texture. We reserved the big back room for a birthday party super convenient the service was also very good.
In the past I have also tried their banh mi sandwich and the pork French toast both were unique and excellent choices.

The pros: great service, fun hip vibe, tasty appetizers, delicious entrees, and a great local beer selection.
The only con: pricing was a little high – the quality of the food and drinks were worth it but you can find similar spots with prices on average about $ 2 – 4 less per item.
for my meal I had the grilled cheese and tomato soup with pesto & added a fried egg to the grilled cheese. so good! a couple of appetizers that we got at the table that I would recommend were the fries with beer cheese, the pretzel balls, and the mac & cheese with broccoli!
One thing that a friend with kids pointed out is that this place is family friendly as it has a little play area on the side of the restaurant that is perfect for the little ones!

Decided to check out north park this weekend and see what it has to offer for brunch. Walked all around nothing seemed to have good breakfast choices. Stumbled upon waypoint public. The menu had more breakfast to offer than the other places. I ordered the southern bell very flavorful. My bf had the avocado dish forgot the name but it’s in the picture.
Service was really good the entire team was very nice and attentive. Our waiter was very knowledgeable on the menu and that’s a plus for me.

Super bomb! I’ve helped this place before and bookmarked it but this time I just glazed over the menu without choosing from Unilocal what I wanted before ordering. I got the the French toast with pulled pork and sunny egg with the cherry bomb cider which was the perfect combo.

I’ve been to waypoint public for both lunch and dinner, and I love them!
Food:
I cannot even pinpoint one dish that stands out to me. Although the menu’s description drives me to major side eye, I have been pleasantly surprised with each one. I do remember that they have bomb dot com fried green tomatoes! It’s not as crisp as what I’ve tried in Virginia, but I love the slightly sour taste paired with the ranch dressing…
Beer: seriously dangerous. Their selection is vast, and their pairing is on point. We had their new years eve pairing… and I’m glad I didn’t drive!
Ambience: It’s loud. It’s family friendly aka it’s LOUDER! Don’t come here for a date. Don’t come here to catch up with friends. Come here to enjoy each other’s company and have yummy food and drinks. With that said, if you DO have kids, this place is awesome. You can drink beer AND the kids can watch Pixar films. I don’t think this place is dog friendly though, so that’s a bummer.
Service: They can get overwhelmed when it’s crowded, enough to note. This is why I withhold the last star. The tables are really close together and make movement for the staff difficult when it’s crowded.
The price point is also pretty high, but that’s the price for great food. I came here expecting to pay for my «cheat» meal, and it is totally worth it.

I wasn’t blown away by this place. We came in after a hike for brunch. We ordered the chicken biscuit plate and the steak and eggs. The chicken biscuit was pretty good, but my steak and eggs didn’t hit the spot. My eggs were supposed to be over-​medium, but they came out over-hard…and the steak is served with a pesto over the top– which I didn’t think the flavors were a good match up. The pesto actually took away from the steak flavor. No Bueno, in my opinion.
The atmosphere is chill and the layout is very open, so on a beautiful day like today, it’s perfect when the breeze is blowing thru.
I would come here again to try something different from the reviews… but as for the steak and eggs, this isn’t the place for that.

Cute spot in North Park!
I ended up here an hour before closing as we left True North Tavern to find something less loud and wild. Across the street, way point looked like something we would enjoy.
The beer selection is amazing and the atmosphere even more so! They have a children’s play pad, how cool is that? Not that I have kids but the idea that parents can go have a drink and meet up with friends al at the same time as keeping an eye on their kids is pretty cool! Haven’t really seen anything like it at other bars so I’m sure they attract a good crowd.
Will definitely be back and hang out longer

Adding a review of brunch to my previous review which was a dinner trip.
We arrived a little before 10am when they open, and as we were waiting outside a small crowd started to develop. We went from being the only group to being one of 6 or 7 even before they opened. We were seated quickly after 10am and the restaurant filled up pretty steadily after that. A lot of people brought children as they still have that play area in the back.
Let’s cut to the food & drinks.
There were a lot of things on the menu and we all had a hard time choosing which items to get.
I had the lemonade mimosa which was very tasty. A standard champagne flute for $ 5.
Pork French Toast — a single large slice of potato chip & Parmesan sourdough bread lay hidden under a mound of BBQ pulled pork topped with two eggs and surrounded by the three cheese IPA Mornay. It was very good and unique as far as «French toast» goes. Typically when I think French toast I think sweet. This was definitely more savory. I think it was a good amount of pork too. I think it was supposed to come with herbed potatoes. I’m not sure I spotted those… Come to think of it, I don’t think they were there at all.
Southern Belle — this is an eggs Benedict made with bacon scallion cornbread instead of an English muffin. «Look! There is bacon IN the bread!» My friend excitedly pointed out to me. She ate every last thing on her plate.
Pretzel Bites — they were more like pretzel balls (about golf ball size) then the bites you would get from one of those vendors in the mall. I love hot pretzels, and these were tasty.
We all left very happy and very full.

North Park is busting at the seams with places that serve up delicious craft beer and a bite to eat, so to me it’s got to be more about the food and service to have true staying power. Waypoint delivered on both accounts last weekend when I stopped in for brunch.
Our group waited at the bar for our table to be ready and decided to start off with some drinks and Fried Green Tomatoes. The bartender, Adam, was great. Super friendly and attentive despite being quite busy. The tomatoes came out perfectly prepared, a nice and crisp fry on the outside without becoming mush on the inside. If your a fan of fried green tomatoes, I’d recommend you give theirs a shot.
After we were seated, the great service continued. A number of staff stopped by to check on us throughout the Neal without being overbearing.
I ended up sharing the Southern Belle Benny Bear and a side of the Broccoli & Beer Mac n’ Cheese. Both dishes were great, but the Mac n’ Cheese was my favorite. The beer cheese sauce has a great depth of flavor and the broccoli helps balance the richness of the dish. Also I have no idea what type of pasta noodle they use, but it’s perfect for this type of dish.

I visited Waypoint Public for brunch this past weekend with some friends and the wife. Two of the friends had just given birth ~3 months ago and the other is ~5 months preggers. Normally I don’t mention things like that in my reviews, but Waypoint was VERY kid friendly and therefore filled with kids and kid noises. They have a fenced-​in area towards the back with kid friendly movies being played on a projector. There’s even a counter right outside the fenced area where the parents can sit and watch their kids while they eat and drink.
The rest of the place is really open. They have huge roll up, garage style doors opening to the outside pretty much all the way around two sides of the restaurant. There’s a high ceiling that helps make it seem very airy. The decorations on the wall are a nice touch as well. A lot of the tables where picnic style tables. It made it easy to fit a larger group of people.
The tap list was quite impressive. There must have been about 30 taps with a lot of local selections as well as a few non-​SD craft beers. Nothing macro. They had an ample list of wines as well, but I didn’t look close enough to go into any detail. All five people that ate with us finished their plates. We ordered a couple benedicts, a couple of scrambles, and some french toast with eggs and sausage. I tasted something off everyone’s plate and didn’t object to anything except for this super smokey green sauce that came with my dish. It really stepped on any flavor you put it on. The smokiness was way over the top.
I have to say Waypoint was a solid brunch decision and I’d head back next time I’m in the area. I’d go for the benedict next time for sure!

My go-​to place in North Park. Good beer selection, good food. You can’t go wrong.
Not sure what it is I love about this place. It might the shrimp tacos (you have to try them, so good) or perhaps the ambience. Very casual and conducive for a laid back weeknight.
I don’t have kids (personally) but this seems like a great place to bring them for brunch. They have a playpen and show movies on a big projector for them. That way the parents can drink and eat well.

A wonderful first time experience. We were there at what I guess was peak family time (reservations were full, and about a 30 minute wait for walk-​ins). When our disappointment showed through the hostess, Taylor, sat us where we could get drinks and shortly after that meal service. The beer was great, the food was amazing, the atmosphere perfect for all types of groups with an area that kids can play in. We ordered in our comfort zone, and were extremely pleased with the outcome, and ready to venture on to something else our next visit. I want to say our server’s name was Brooke, but I can’t be sure. She was great either way.

This place is pretty legit. Came here on a Saturday night around 8:30 and got seated right away. It has a pretty cool layout but the tables are pretty close together if you have any personal space issues.
The customer service was pretty good. Our waiter was helpful and attentive but wasn’t very loud so it was kind of hard to hear him over the conversations going on around us.
Food and drinks were on point. I ordered the Waypoint Burger with bacon. Idk why it doesn’t automatically come with bacon considering this is America, but I digress. The burger comes with French fries made from some fancy potato or a salad I believe but once again this is America so I went with the fries. We also order the Stout Sprouts which were ON POINT! To drink I ordered a beer off of their printed menu which was a mistake on my part because the beer menu on the screens above the bar area had a beer I’d much rather have had (don’t worry, I got that other beer too). Burger was ordered medium well and came that way. It was nice and juicy as well as properly seasoned. The fries were pretty damn good too (must’ve been those fancy potatoes).
Overall a really great place to come to eat, drink or eat and drink. They’re family (little kid) friendly and were even playing Finding Nemo on their projector screen in the back which I though was pretty cool. Definitely give this place a try!

Fun, thoughtful menu. I generally don’t like sweet food, read a food description w a stuffed plum… but the Devil on Horseback was a great recommendation. It’s so well balanced and tasty. It was a great example of why you should step out of your comfort zone ever once and a while!
Adam was such a great resource for beer, food and everything else we threw at him.

Really enjoy the atmosphere there. You can sit and people watch while you munch on some delicious grub. I’ve been there a few times now for brunch and just drinks as well. Huge bottled beer selection which is fun. Great brunch options and again the atmosphere is really cool, lots of great people watching!

Waypoint Public is a good local spot for any casual occasion. The ambiance has the usual hipster feel North Park consistently delivers these days.
I ordered the Public Burger. All in all, it was a solidly cooked with good seasoning to boot. The fries were a tad soggy, however they did not ruin my collective enjoyment of the meal. It wasn’t the best burger I’ve had, but I wouldn’t mind ordering it again.

Beer:
Good selection of draft and bottle craft beers. Ummm all I did was drink beer.
Venue:
Tough parking, but I always get lucky. Great place to people watch as you enjoy dinner. The windows are just awesome.
Service:
Taylor was awesome. She gave great service and made us feel welcomed.

Ate dinner here recently. Very good draft beer selection and wow the bottle beer menu was super large. Lots of choices. Wine menu decent, but a bit pricey. Not too many wines by the glass.
Atmosphere — great. Large roll up garage style windows, has a good vibe. 2 TVs (only — maybe a few more would be nice).
The food menu is limited. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. They have 3 sections, small bites, medium bites and the large entrees. Not much choice if you aren’t a red meat lover. Though a few choices, including a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup combo for $ 14.
Of course, I presume the menu varies depending on season, availability of ingredients, etc. So this might not be a fair assessment.
This place is family friendly but not dog friendly. So not really a «plus» in my mind. They have a play area roped off for the kiddies and basically when we were there the kids ran all over the place. Of course, this is really the fault of the parents, who were either complacent or oblivious.
Service — our waiter Bruno was spot on. He answered several questions we had and was very attentive.
Food — had the mac and cheese — which was tasty, but initially served cold in the middle. Bruno was very nice about correcting this. Once heated it was good.

I eat here pretty often for brunch– always had good service. The tamales and eggs, the Benny’s, the chilaquiles are all great. Micheladas are decent too. The bartender is always willing to make me one even if I’m there after brunch has ended.

I came here to celebrate my 12^th Anniversary with my husband. I had Prairie Bomb Stout that was still available. Won’t be for long though. It was really, REALLY good. My husband had a hefeweizen, but said it was «meh» — couldn’t remember the name.
For starters we shared the octopus. It was okay. A bit overcooked and rubbery. It’s super hard for people to cook that properly. It goes from rubber when it’s raw to tender when cooked right and back to rubber again if it’s even 2 seconds too long. The relish provided with it was good, but there was no dipping sauce or anything so if you don’t like the relish, you probably won’t like the very plain-​tasting octopus. Only came with 3 tiny octopi *which is grammatically incorrect, but if I said octopodes, nobody would know what I was saying, and octopuses just is weird*
Anyway… For my meal I had the Fish & Chips. I would have ordered mussels, but they were serving it with pork belly, and I really didn’t want pork. My fish was breaded well, but bland. VERY bland. The roasted lemon was a very nice addition to it though. The tartar sauce was tasty, but when I used it, it was all I could taste, even with only the tiniest dab on the end of the bite of fish and I didn’t order tartar sauce for dinner. The french fries were really good. Their ranch was delish.
My husband ordered the enchiladas, and really liked his. I remember him raving about it while we were there.
Dessert choices were so boring we elected not to get any.
The price point was expensive for the quality. 3 beers for me, 2 for my husband, a meal that was not all that exciting, the loudness, and the bill WITHOUT tip was $ 100. =(
However, we have decided it wasn’t worth returning.
Our server, David was excellent. Really knowledgeable about the stout, and I’m sure it helps that he drinks that too (a rarity here in San Diego where everyone and their dog seems to love IPA). Sadly, his shift ended and we got stuck with some girl with long hair who wasn’t wasn’t very attentive, and it was only the last 10 minutes of our meal. I hear she was the one to get the tip. I don’t think that’s right when all we were doing was getting ready to leave, the only reason it took that long was because it took her forever to stop by. David should have gotten at least 95% of the tip. I spoke with the hostess about that.
I think it was definitely worth going, but it’s just not a place we’d like to return to.
I should note, that if you have small kids, this place might work for you. They have a kind of large area roped off where kids can play. It’s inside.
The restaurant was already irritatingly loud as it was, but then you add loud kid sound and it made it unbearable. I lost count of how many times I had to cup my ear and say what to my husband, or how many times I had to repeat myself to him. We have kids, I would NOT have gone had I know it was THAT kid friendly. So just be aware of where you sit, because they do have tables right next to that play area.

Waypoint Public is conveniently located right next to a parking structure which is nice since there isn’t much parking in the are. I ate dinner here on a Friday evening around 6:30pm so i beat the dinner rush. We were able to sit down right away. They have a nice extensive bottle beer list. If you are in the mood to spend a pretty penny they have a lot of nice options to choose from. If you aren’t in the mood to splurge on a bottle they have some good beers on draft to choose from.
Their food menu had some good options. We ended up getting the Porter House which was pretty tasty. It has a unique coleslaw on top. We also got the Devilmademedoit Burger. The patty was nice an thick, but the deviled eggs spread was pretty much non existent so it kind of felt that i was eating a burger with just bacon and some condiments so the buns were a little dry. We also got he grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup. I was surprised at how small the sandwich was, but it ended up being pretty tasty along with the soup. Over all a nice to eat, but nothing too special about it!

I had to update my review to reiterate that this is a very solid spot. Noël and Adam are super attentive and excellent with service. Even if you’re slurring, have a lisp, or can’t pronounce the name of a beer right, they got you.
Again, the seating on the window makes this place unique. You can catch the North Park vibes while you sip on a beer. Occasionally you’ll see some entertaining stuff, like two girls chasing then subsequently trying to get into their über ride in the middle of the street only to be denied. Good times.
The children’s play pen is also awesome for those of you who chose to procreate. Waypoint is so good and welcoming than I’m considering having a kid of my own just to bring him here. I suppose I should find a girlfriend first.
Furthermore, their beer list rotates frequently. If you like trying new things, this is your spot. Either look up at the screens or grab a beer list folder from the bar… You won’t be disappointed.

With so many better places to eat in San Diego at more affordable prices, I don’t think my fiancé and I will be back to Waypoint Public. We came here because we wanted dinner after going to Dark Horse and Waypoint Public was next door and convenient with a 4 star Unilocal review.
We were both craving burgers and ordered the Public Burger with fries. The fries and burger weren’t awful, but they weren’t special. There are so many of these gastropubs popping up these days and the burger here didn’t measure up considering the price at $ 13. This burger was the cheapest and plainest of the burgers on the menu. I wasn’t a fan of mozzarella on the burger, but that’s what the plain burger came with. Fries were also very plain and lackluster. My fiancé was considering sharing both the bahn mi and a burger, but I don’t like pâté, so we opted out. The bahn mi was listed for $ 15– pretty ridiculous price for a bahn mi!
It was pretty busy when we came here and no tables were available so we sat at the window seats facing the sidewalk. The restaurant is enclosed, but open air. The seats were pretty uncomfortable. Service was alright, but it took quite a while to get our food.
The restaurant seems to get a lot of traffic from young parents that come here with their babies and children. They have a play area for kids here. I was wondering the whole time how they afford their lifestyle/​being able to live in SD and what jobs they have. My fiancé and I were almost inclined to ask what their professions are. Message me/​send me a note if you are so inclined to answer to satisfy my curiosity.
The food at Waypoint Public wasn’t awful, but most likely my fiancé and I won’t be returning, so Waypoint gets a SOLID 2 stars. There are just too many places in San Diego that serve much better food in general/​burgers/​sandwiches for a much cheaper price.

I ended up at Waypoint while I was at Coin Op down the street. My friends and I were looking to get some food and I heard some good stuff about Waypoint. It was pretty busy on a Saturday night and 4 of us got seated in about 10 mins. Our waiter was friendly and recommended beers for my friends. All of us ordered their $ 16 burger and i have to admit, I was either drunk or this was one of the best burgers I’ve tasted in a while. I especially enjoyed the fried egg! It wasn’t your standard burger from a restaurant, bun was soft and the meat was cooked to my liking, medium rare. Burger was delicious!
If you’re in the area or into beers and IPAs then I’d highly recommend trying this place out. There’s other foods to try out besides burgers so if you’re drunk and hungry, head to Way point!

I was very disappointed with the roasted vegetable and barley dish. It was inedible because it was too salty. I sent the dish back. The second time around, the barley was undercooked, so I couldn’t eat it again. The server comped that dish, which I really appreciated, because I left the restaurant very hungry.
Unfortunately, other people in my party appeared to think that their dishes were not worth the listed prices. The chicken and mussels dishes garnered shoulder shrugs and mediocre reviews. The mussels broth was too salty. I suspect that the general oversalting just adds to the beer tab. If so, I think it is a genius strategy!
Waypoint is a great spot to enjoy beers and leave your children unattended. However, the food leaves something to be desired.

Came here on a Sunday night to watch a little of the football game and grab some dinner. I had the brisket sandwich. The brisket was sliced very thin and it had good flavor. I wish there was more meat on the sandwich. I feel like it was a little light in that area.
The fries were very good. Very crispy and salty.
My friends had the burger he said it was very good and even commented about how good it was the following day.
The other people ordered the Mussels and pork belly. I thought that was an interesting combo and encouraged them to try it. They did like it. My one friend had tried the mussel plate from another local place and she did like that one better, but she did like this one as well.
This place is very open and has a big tv on the far side to watch the game. They also have a play area for small children.

I love Waypoint Public. Their food is great. Beer great. Location great. Kid play area great.
I have done brunch, lunch and dinner here. I had the chicken and a biscuit brunch meal last weekend. It was amazingly delicious!
The bartender of choice is Adam. Good with people and super easy to talk with, chop up beer with and more.

Came with a party of 8 on a weekend dinner on a warm day. They have a good draught selection, an area that is Kid-​friendly.
I ordered the mussels & pork belly. A really delicious broth, plenty of mussels, pork belly is also tender and has a roasted exterior.
It has been really hot lately; their only reliable source of cool air is all the wall-​sized open windows around the establishment.
Friendly service, no complains!

I have been here a few times now since this placed changed from Linkery.
My husband and I came here for dinner on Sunday night. I ordered the Fish n’ Chips; IPA Batter, Tartar Sauce, Grilled Lemon for $ 17(pricey) and he ordered the Shrimp & Sausage Tagliatelle; Smashed Cherry Tomatoes, Roasted Garlic, Basil & Parmesan for $ 17. My fish was more breading then fish, and soaked up plenty of oil. The fish lacked flavor. Too plain for my taste buds. The fries were good. The tartar sauce was perfect! But, I thought that it was over priced for what I received.
My husbands Shrimp & Sausage was more like just pasta. There were only 4 shrimp and 3 sausage pieces. It lacked any flavor and was greasy. He ordered a beer, and that was fine. The bartender was busy stocking glasses. So he was not able to give us more attention. We had to get his attention several times for a drink.
My husband complained about the fish being so breaded. And although we were offered to have it replaced (which we did not choose). The entrée was removed from the bill. This was really nice of them. Honestly, I would have rather had a delicious meal then have it knocked off the bill. Plus, it was really loud inside with the TV playing Toy Story for the kids, and the kids were really loud. For me, this place is only good for beer. Not food. Therefore, I give Waypoint Public 3 stars.
