Ashbury General Contracting & Engineering operates with a unique business model: We focus on getting our clients the best product at the most competitive pricing. You may be thinking to yourself that sounds like every other contractor’s promise, but at Ashbury, we go to great lengths to accomplish this for our clients. To achieve this goal, we’ve hired a loyal and well-​trained staff of tradesmen to lower the overhead cost associated with subcontracting work — we do it all «in-​house.» With over fifty field employees, ranging from skilled carpenters to experienced plumbers to a team of expert electricians, we pay hourly salaries rather than the hefty overhead and profit margins of multiple subcontractors. This allows Ashbury to manage scheduling and pricing that other general contracting firms have to depend on subcontractors to dictate.

Specializing in high-​end residential remodeling, we have completed hundreds of projects throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Our portfolio of work also includes a number of commercial projects, city park improvements and roadway construction. Opening Ashbury General Contracting & Engineering in 2003, founder Kevin Born has over 30 years of building experience. With a diverse experience ranging from running drill rigs in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, concrete masonry for seismic retrofitting, public works coordinating to framing carpentry, Kevin brings his wealth of experience into every project. He, along with his effective, core group of office staff maintain a sterling commitment to providing potential clients with comprehensive, competitive pricing and to upholding honest and open communication with past, current and potential clients alike. At Ashbury, we make every effort to work together with the client, architect, engineers and every member of the client team to ensure that we are all working in tandem to achieve the same goals.

I made a decision to remodel my bathroom and came across Ashbury on Unilocal.I submitted my initial inquiry and received a prompt reply which was reassuring. Unfortunately that didn’t last long as I had confirmed 4p consultation appointment and after waiting over an hour, sending an email and leaving a voicemail I got an email asking if we could reschedule. The excuse was the prior appointment ran late but seriously how difficult is it to advise your next client that you’ll be late let alone a new client? Needless to say I will find another provider.

Kevin Born and Ashbury Construction did an amazing re-​contruction of my jewelry retail storefront. It is probably the smallest project that they have handled in the last two years.
Making the project additionally problamatic was that i wanted the work accomplished in 5 days so my business would not have alot of downtime. That would have been a scheduling nightmare for most contractors.
The front was removed, re-​framed, marble installed, glass installed and stuccoed within the time frame and the craftsmanship was excellent. All of the people that worked on the project were courteous and took extra pains to work as cleanly as possible because they had to set up their saws and other equipment inside of the store.
Kevin Born as a pleasure to work with. When my landlord raised concerns about the project, he made time to consult with them and address those concerns. He also kept me continually updated on progress or stalls within the project. Additionally he was able, tactfully, to help me with some design questions that arose.
Project done on time, within budget to my satisfaction. What more could I want.

I am an Interior Designer and I have worked with Ashbury Construction on two home renovation projects.
My first experience was with a client who was on a budget and wanted her master bathroom fully remodeled. Ashbury come in on time and under bid on this project, the client was pleased with the work and the attention to detail was much appreciated. The bathroom is beautiful.
The second time I worked with Ashbury was on a master bathroom and guest bathroom project for a very high-​end client. The challenge was a tight construction schedule and getting high-​end materials installed perfectly, as this client was VERY particular about her home and there was no room for mistakes.
As it turns out, the client ended up starting and stopping the project due to her travel schedule, but Ashbury stayed on the job and worked around challenging construction requests and stressful deadlines. In the end, the client was pleased with the bathroom, I was pleased with how Ashbury bent over backwards to accomodate the timeline.
The owner, Kevin, is patient, courteous and respectful of the homes he is in while on the site. His team is punctual and his prices are reasonable.
I recommend Ashbury Construction over and over to my design clients, as I have had nothing but good experiences with them.

There are not enough superlatives to explain how incredible Kevin Born and team are. In a world of over priced, under qualified contractors of questionable integrity, Kevin stands heads and tails above the fray. My wife and I first worked with Kevin when he was recommended by the Pella window folks in Berkley. We were installing oversize 10′ sliding doors in the back of our home. The only access to the back of the house was through the house. One contractor proposed craning them over the top of the house (read EXPENSIVE), Kevin looked at the job, and was confident he and his crew could get them in w/​o craning — which they did. We have since confidently relied on Ashbury construction for many many home improvement jobs — large and small over the last 10 years.
Three things stand out every time we work with Kevin. His quote is golden, they are always on time, they clean up the work space at the end of each day, and the skill level of every member of Kevin’s team reflects the old world expertise of workers trained by the guilds; be they carpenters, plumber’s, or any other home improvement expertise you can think of.
The biggest plus to me though is I have complete peace of mind when Kevin’s team is on the job. That I must say is priceless.

I am a neighbor of a major project that Ashbury is finishing right now, I live right across the street from a house that they lifted and put a garage in underneath.
I have been so impressed with how they have gone above and beyond to be good niehgbors during the project. Every single evening by 5 the entire area is totally cleaned up and shut down. No loud machines are used early in the morning and they must park far away and walk up because they are not taking up parking on the street. The house looks amazing, has made the whole block nicer. So thank you!

Absolutely fantastic job! Not only did they honor the quote we received on replacing the almost 100 year old sewer pipe, but when the plants were dug up they replaced them with plants and flowers that were even more beautiful than what we had.
The job was a big one. After having the sewer inspector tell us that the pipe was 4ft deep we received a reasonable quote to dig it up and replace it with a PVC pipe that should last for about 100 years. In the end it was about 6ft deep, took many hours and lots of man power. The job was done on time, on budget and everything looks great. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for top notch professional work. We will use them again for work we plan on doing inside the house.

Ashbury Construction has provided us with great service over multiple projects. Their prices are very competitive and their customer service is excellent. A year after our first remodel was complete we came home one Sunday night to discover that our heater would not turn on. We called Kevin. He was en route back from Tahoe and came directly to our house He found out we had not changed our filter (our responsibility) and changed it for us so that the heater would turn on again. Peter was our foreman on our first project and he often went above and beyond. After work at night he researched on the internet out-​door speakers and emailed us suggestions on products. We highly recommend Ashbury Construction as a general contractor.

I am a neighbor of one of Ashbury’s constructions clients. While I didn’t hire them I, along with other neighbors, ended up dealing with them. In the process of digging two levels underground, the house next door sunk down on one side and resulting in damages of nearly $ 700K. The shoring work was not sufficient and you can blame it on the engineers and the shoring company, but an experienced and smart general contractor should know how to manage a project A to Z. When you don’t see your general contractor on-​site at least a couple of times a week, you run huge risks. Ashbury is not worth the risk they cause.
Also it’s worth mentioning that they left lots of building materials and debris in the street parking spot and left sand uncovered in the front yard, letting wind blow it all over. When neighbors complained they ignored them.
