Benjamin B Bert, MD

Came here for something very specific, ended up having an unnecessary and unrelated procedure/​exam done, which I had never asked for, and that my insurance didn’t cover.
I tried to negotiate/​dispute it, but was of course given the run-​around, and the usual rehearsed defense of, «We’re not responsible for knowing your insurance, blablabla.» No, dear, this is not about me debating any legal (or even moral) obligation for you to communicate, be upfront, and give me a chance to decline said procedure/​exam, this is a matter of bad business practice. Sure, a simple Google search would have informed me that this procedure is not covered by insurance providers, but I trust YOU to be the experts who deal with this every single day, and know very well how costly it is to patients.
And then there’s that follow-​up argument about how this procedure was «necessary». Okay, I don’t pretend to know more than you, but I was perfectly content with what I had gotten out of the initial visit prior to it, and can safely say that it added nothing to that initial diagnosis, prognosis, prescription, or really… anything whatsoever. So, you can argue that a follow-​up «for your own information» testing is necessary… the same way you could have also tacked on some x-​rays, blood sampling, STD lab-​work, etc. etc. Bottom line, I did not need it, nor did I want it. Especially since this was not the first visit I had regarding this particular issue.
For what it’s worth, Benjamin Bert seems like a «nice» guy. As others have pointed out, it’s his front-​desk staff that is cold and humorless. And quite frankly, I don’t trust this clinic to have my best interests in mind, and to not exploit their patients. Some of us really can’t afford to take that chance.

Dr. Bert is fantastic! My eye had been bothering me for quite some time, to the point where I was unable to wear my contact lens. After about a month (I know, I know) I finally decided to get it checked out by an ophthalmologist. A few weeks prior my now-​previous eye doctor told me that there wasn’t anything wrong and that I should just give my eye a rest. Dr. Bert, however, found a piece of debris in my cornea and was able to remove it painlessly. He gave me steroid drops for my eye, and a week later, my eye was feeling great!
The staff members, along with Dr. Bert, are very friendly and welcoming, and they have very specialized equipment. Dr. Bert was incredibly personable and easy to talk to, and you can tell he really cares about his work. I will definitely be going back for future eye appointments.

Dr. Benjamin Bert and his entire staff are professional, warm and attentive. I’ve already referred numerous friends and colleagues at work, who have shared my sentiments. Dr. Bert was thorough, took his time to explain what was going on and took excellent care of me. His staff was A+ too.

Did my 72 year old dads cataract surgery on both eyes. my dad says he can see better now than when he was in his 20s.

Dr. Bert is an excellent ophthalmologist. Highly knowledgeable and takes the time to listen to and answer all your questions.
He is dedicated to giving you the best care and will thoroughly explain all your treatment options and give his professional recommendation without trying to sell you on anything you don’t need.
He has also taken the time to surround himself with a great staff. They’re helpful, knowledgeable, friendly, and welcoming as well. Appointments are on time and they always find room to fit me into their schedule at a time that works for me.
The office is clean, well organized, and flows efficiently. You couldn’t ask for more in a doctor, his team, or his practice.

Dr. Bert was great. I have been getting a lot of migraines and they often came after staring at a computer. I went to see Dr Bert. to see if it had to do with my eyes. I have a stigmatism and I was putting a lot of stress on my eyes. Dr. Bert thought glasses would be helpful and take the strain off. He took his time, examined my eyes and wrote me a prescription for glasses. I am going to come in shortly to pick glasses out in his office. He is a onc stop shop. Everyone was so nice, the process was smooth, I did not wait more than 3 mins before I was seen. I could not say enough about Dr. Bert and his staff.

The front office is run by people that are clueless, don’t give a damn and often lie.
I made an appointment and they cancelled it three times and moved it a few times.
I decided that if the simple task of setting up an appointment is so difficult for this establishment I don’t feel comfortable trusting them with something a bit more complicated like my eyes.
The Dr could be good but he must be clueless having little kids run his front office. If he’s clueless about that who knows what else…

I went in for a small surgery and he explained everything to me carefully and made me feel so comfortable. He is very nice, friendly and gentle. I enjoyed a very pleasent conversation with him during my procedure and I would recommend him to everybody.

This review is for Dr. Bert and his optometrist, Dustin. I have horrible vision — almost blind without glasses or contacts — so having a great eye doctor is really important. Dr. Bert is very thorough and professional, while also nice and patient. I had trouble with my contacts prescription and he allowed me to come back three times at no charge to make sure I got the right fit and type of lens. Dustin is also a very knowledgeable, nice, and patient person and he worked with me to pick out the perfect pair of glasses. In fact he just gave me some free samples of contacts because I ran out before my mail order arrived. Staff are also very nice.

I highly recommend Dr. Bert. I have eye problems which require me to see an ophthalmologist yearly. I finally found Dr. Bert after a few false starts with other doctors.
Dr. Bert and his staff are friendly and helpful. The doctor listens and treats his patients with respect. It’s clear that Dr. Bert cares.

I’m new to SF, so you can imagine my panic after I suddenly started having a blurry spot in my vision! I was referred to him by a friend from the area, and thankfully the problem is now resolved. Very thorough and professional and the office staff is some of the nicest I’ve ever encountered.

I went and saw Dr. Bert for a superficial eye condition that no one else had been able to cure (for months). I’d paid multiple visits to my general physician, dermatologist, and optometrist and none of their treatments had helped. After my first visit to Dr. Bert’s office, I was on the road to recovery. He is a great Opthamologist and runs an amazing practice. It’s obvious that everyone who works for him is happy, as his office is filled with cheerful employees. I could not be happier with my new eye doctor!

Great experience from the front desk, to the optician, to the ophthalmologist.
I’m not a big fan of having my eyes checked, mostly because of my fear about having crap shoved into my eyes where chemicals don’t belong. But, my regular optometrist had once said I had «arcus senalis» — a possible sign of high cholesterol and, well, basically getting old. A little concerned what my eye health was telling me I thought it couldn’t hurt to have my eyes given a real doctors look over and I had heard great things about Dr. Bert.
As I was in the waiting room, the young, sharp-​looking optician, Dustin, noticed my Oakley glasses. My sister was with me and pointed out my duct-​taped ear hangs. I was happily surprised he assisted me in correcting this fashion faux pas by replacing it with other rubber that looked much sharper and like it really came with my original pair of glasses.
Dr. Bert, the ophthalmologist, was extremely kind and professional. He was understanding of my concerns about chemicals in my eyes and reassuring why it wouldn’t harm me and was beneficial in getting a complete view of my eyes (I mean, they are the window to the soul, right? and, really, a window into the health of the whole body, so I couldn’t argue too much). He was very quick and efficient in checking my vision and eye health. Amazingly, he said my optometrist was wrong and I showed absolutely NO signs of Arcus senalis and he couldn’t believe she never recommended I see him or another ophthalmologist upon her initial diagnosis.
I definitely plan to come back to Dr. Bert for keeping an eye on my eyes.
