Perfectly adequate haircut, but you’d pay a lot less at Supercuts. The consultation was cursory and lasted 15 seconds. The stylist did not seem to enjoy her work or have much interest in doing anything other than finishing the cut (which she did in 18 minutes including shampoo and after cut rinse). As I said the cut perfectly adequate and if that’s what you’re looking for you can find it much cheaper just about anywhere.

Ricky Harris is an great hair stylist! He helped me get the color I wanted with giving 3 options on how to get there! He cut it jus the way I wanted it. Had a great fun conversation with! Definitely will go back! Thanks!

I can’t believe Alyssa is now working at Bryan Robert! I first met her when she was working up in Chico, and now she has made the leap to the big city. Like everybody else at Bryan Robert, Alyssa is a total pro. She has something like a decade of experience on the Aveda system, and she does a lot of high end color jobs. For guys like me, she is super experienced at cutting men’s hair and shooting the breeze with clients. She’s fun. She knows what she is doing. Check her out.

Every year or so I decide to check out somewhere besides my usual barber shop, to see if I want to continue to go to mine. In this instance, I came to Bryan Roberts. All-​in-​all, it was an OK experience. I had my hairs cut by a lovely young woman who did just as nice of a job as my usual barber. The customer service was very nice as well, and I felt well cared for. The only thing I was put off by, was the young stylists comments about how old my gray hairs make me look — and that i should consider having them colored. At the ripe old age of 38 with 10 gray hairs shuffled about in my sea of asian black hair… I was surprised. She must have read my expression as she quickly changed her comment to, «oh…i mean… it’s distinguishing. alot of people are into that ‘older’ look.» Ummm. no.
So…certainly don’t mean to ding them just on that. I also thought the prices for a short-​hair cut was a bit high and it took her quite a while to do my hair (just under an hour for a very short hairs cut).

My regular stylist (Gino) wasn’t available so I had my regular haircut with Bryan the owner. The experience was nice, with a shampoo, light head massage. The haircut was ok, wasn’t great but wasn’t bad. The cost however was definitely not worth it. $ 80 for a men’s haircut with shampoo? Maybe there were gold flakes in the shampoo… I got a better haircut from Gino for under $ 40. Too bad.
I suggest get a quote before they start chopping away.

I’d been considering dyeing my hair grey and I wanted to go to a salon in the Castro area, so I decided to take a chance and tried out Bryan Roberts Salon & Color Bar. I was surely not disappointed! I was paired with Gino and Mitch and they provided excellent service and advice. By the way, I had never dyed my hair before and I hadn’t been to a salon in 6 years (I started to cut my own hair). Keeping this in mind, they absolutely did a great job keeping me calm as my hair changed from black to yellow to purple/​grey.
I was not sure about how grey hair would suit me but I am loving the outcome! I definitely recommend Gino and I will be coming back to work with him again soon.

Ricky did a fabulous job on my hair! He took it from dull an boring to full of life! He knows exactly what will look good with your face shape. I would recommend him to anyone. Beautiful salon where you really feel pampered. The rest of the stylists were really friendly as well. Nice serene atmosphere. A nice salon that isn’t super pretentious where you are made to feel really comfortable! Also, its an Aveda salon! Yay! Will be back in a couple months!

I just moved here from NYC and have had the same stylist for 10 years! I was nervous to try someone new but Gino is wonderful– he really listens and makes great recommendations for the look and health of your hair. I find the prices very reasonable for the quality of hair care. I hope to return for a haircut soon!

This is the worst experience I’ve ever had with a salon. I’m surprised they are still in business. I made it there for a hair cut and highlights once and never again. They currently have $ 110 of my money that they are refusing to refund after I made an appointment online, paid a $ 110 deposit, to then receive a phone call 30 mins before the appointment that the stylist (Bryan Roberts) doesn’t know how to cut my type of hair. I have a chin length Bob… It’s not complicated! They cancelled on me leaving me high and dry on a Saturday with no hair service and $ 110 down. They are liars and thieves. 1 star is too much!

After going to Bryan Roberts Salon & Color Bar in the Castro for about a year, we just canceled all of our appointments. We just received a call from the salon asking us not bring our five year old daughter back and leave her some somewhere else while we got our hair cut. Definitely Bryan Roberts Salon & Color Bar is not a family-​friendly place. Also, if you are allergic to dogs, the salon is definitely not for you as the owner keeps his dog there.

I’ve workers in Union Square for over 7 years. With being accustomed to it’s many salons, I decided to try out one of my neighborhood business.
I always take great care at looking great anything above the neck so I knew this might be a slight risk. I’ve always been loyal to my stylist up until this point.
After I called, I was answered by their fantastic receptionist (whom I don’t remember her name, sorry) and she explained the pricing and who would be cutting my hair.
Joe had an opening and was able to fit me in same day. Joe was awesome, very personable and made me laugh. Proficient at doing exactly what I was looking for at an affordable price. Surprise treat was the massage that I was not at all expecting.
The salon was clean and nice looking. Very happy with my overall experience and taking a risk on a new salon!

I’ve been going to Bryan of Bryan Roberts since 2007. I don’t have much to work with up top but when talking with Bryan and listening to his suggestions he designs a style and cut that makes me feel half my age and it shows! Ever since he opened his own salon he has gotten even better! I have since moved away from SF, but you can bet every time I return I look forward to my next visit.

Awful experience.
I will say that Jenny is excellent. She cut my hair awhile ago and I loved the cut. We had discussed having her do my highlights, but she was booked for months, so they booked me with a different colorist. He spent a lot of time on a color that just didn’t turn out right… it was orange and bottom heavy. It was clear by the end of the appointment that I was unhappy so he said it would be fine to redo it. We booked an appointment for a redo, but nobody was available for a week. I went home and realized that I couldn’t go to work or to holiday events looking like this (it was 2 days before Christmas). I called the Salon back and since this colorist wasn’t available for a week, Jenny offered to fix my hair the very next day. She added more of my original color and toned it back to a less orangey shade and overall it looked much better.
Fast forward to yesterday. I made an appointment for a simple shampoo blowdry. I showed the stylist, Joe Solis, a picture of what I wanted — a roundbrush blowout with lots of volume and curls. The picture was of me with a recent hairstyle that I really liked. I’ve always used Aveda products so I explained to him the products that I liked; that the smooth infusion line tends to make my hair fall flat because my hair is quite fine. I told him what shampoo and conditioner I use at home. He conditioned my hair and then brought me over to his station and started hesitantly brushing at my bangs. After fiddling with them for a bit, he grabbed a flat brush and a blowdryer. I asked him if he had a roundbrush. He told me that he thought a flat brush was better for my hair because otherwise a «roundbrush would never get volume in my bangs». I asked if he was sure since I’ve had hundreds of blowouts before and they’ve always been done with a rounbrush. He said no, he was not sure and then grabbed a roundbrush. I also suggested some products; the volumizing tonic and the phomollient. He said he didn’t like the phomollient and I explained again that it had worked really well for me in the past. He reluctantly went and got the products and asked me where I would like the volumizing tonic sprayed. I told him around my roots and asked if he had used it before. He again reluctantly started spraying little bits of it around my scalp. At this point i said to him, «I don’t mean to offend you, but you seem really uncomfortable» He put down all his tools and said «yes, I am really uncomfortable. I don’t think this is a good fit. I’m going to tell the front desk I can’t do your hair» and stormed off with me still sitting in the chair with my hair dripping wet. The front desk manager attempted to find out what happened and then tried to apologize on his behalf, but couldn’t find another stylist to do my hair. While I was waiting for the situation to be sorted out, the original colorist who did my hair walked by me, glared at me and made rude comments. The manager had to ask him to stop and leave me alone.
Eventually, the manager offered to make me an appointment at a different salon and offered me a discount on future services, which is nice of her, but it doesn’t change the way the stylists behaved. Jenny may be wonderful, but I don’t want to go to a salon where I feel disrespected by the staff, or I am punished and publicly chastised for asking for what i want or speaking up when I am not happy with a style or an outcome. If they don’t like to correct color or styles when clients are unhappy, they shouldn’t offer to do so. It’s unreasonable and unprofessional to offer repairs and then hold grudges against clients simply because they asked to have something fixed. It’s also incredibly unprofessional to in the middle of an appointment announce you can’t do someone’s hair and walk off without any explanation or attempt to make sure the client still gets her hair done, particularly when all I was doing was explaining what products I liked. Fundamentally, I believe I have the right to decide what is done with my hair and my body. Not only that, but it is in fact, my hair, and having had it all my life, I know what works well for me. I also know what doesn’t work; and usually a stylist who doesn’t listen to me and refuses to hear my input does not work out well. I think Jenny is a great stylist, but I prefer to go to a salon where I feel respected and valued as a client. At the end of the day, I just want my hair done well, without all the drama and the egos.

This review is for Jenny. I stumbled upon Bryan Roberts salon when I was looking for a last minute appointment and it was meant to be because I was able to snatch up an appointment with Jenny.
She listens to you and is realistic about what to expect. She really went over and beyond what I expected, she was so meticulous about getting my full highlights, piece by piece, that it took her nearly 4 – 5 hours! She didn’t take any shortcuts and made sure every single piece was hand selected and colored to perfection.
Jenny also gave me an awesome bob cut. I’m trying to grow out my hair and she’s helped me shape it so I can keep growing it out.
Not only is she just fabulous on cut and highlights, but I talked to her the entire time about the drama going on in my life haha it was such a relief talking to her and made the time go by so fast. She is such a sweetheart and I will definitely come back to her!
I came back to get more of a balayage blended look, and again, she took her time to perfect it. Love her!
PS. Her head and hand massages feel AMAZING.

My First experience with Bryan Roberta Salon was filled with warm and welcoming vibes.
My appointment was with Ryan, and he did a fabulous job on my hair, seeing as it was damaged from previous bleaching episodes. He was able to cut and highlight/​color my hair back to perfection.

It’s extremely challenging and stressful to find a new salon/​hair stylist. On top of the obvious difficulties of finding someone who understands how to work with your hair and the extremely frightening prospect of walking away from the salon with a haircut or color that you hate, there is the understated social fear of how will you relate with your hairstylist. Will you have conversation, will you remain silent, do you respect them as a professional, do they respect you as a client?
It is because of this final issue that I am giving this rating. I scheduled my first appointment with Ryan for a simple highlight and cut– without any prior recommendation and out of necessity only after quieting that part of me that said it was a horrible idea. I briefly considered that I should have listened as I arrived at the salon slightly early for my appointment only to be told by the receptionist I would have to wait 30 minutes for my appointment. As I sat in the chair waiting past the 5^th ‘rolling stone’ article and 45 minutes past the originally-​scheduled appointment, not even hearing a word from Ryan, I got to experience one of those rare moments when that part of you that says ‘this will only end badly’ is right.
As I was leaving, Ryan introduced himself to me for the first time. I’m confident this was only because he was concerned he would be left with unbooked time after I left. I could understand his explanation about a ‘color emergency’. I could even understand that if I were his previous client I would have appreciated that much attention to my hair. What I cannot understand is the lack of respect for my time and the lack of communication or damage control until the point that it negatively affects him, the stylist.
The moral of this story: personal recommendations are always better than walls of Unilocal reviews.

It is seriously difficult finding a good color salon.
I specifically requested an appointment with Gino because I read great reviews about him and liked several colors that he’s done on his clients. Upon meeting him, I showed him a picture of the color/​look that I wanted. It was a picture on Unilocal,colored BY HIM. Needless to say, he did not get the color right at all.
When I came in, my hair was pretty much blond/​light brown. Essentially, I gave him a blank canvas to work with. I wanted medium brown hair with lighter brown ends. He gave me BLACK (well, very dark brown) hair. When he was done, he asked me how I liked it and I said it’s a lot darker than I wanted. He said, «really? this is pretty light brown». It was NOT light. I asked for a level ⁵⁄₆ brown and somehow it comes out as a level ²⁄₃ brown. Tell me how does this happen.
I’m not exactly the type to be outwardly enraged and upset, but I did express disappointment by saying how this was not the color I had request for. He did not offer to help me fix it at all.
Next, the receptionist rings me up and charges me a total of $ 120. I was ticked off by this point because not only did I not get the color I wanted, I was charged $ 120 for disappointment. But what can you do? She asks me how I liked my color and I said it wasn’t the color I wanted. It’s too dark. What annoyed me was what she said after.
«Oh it’s a good look for the fall.»
«Oh it will get lighter after 2 – 3 weeks.»
«Should I book you for a future appointment?»
I get it, you’re nice. You know I’m upset. But please do not give me some dumb cliché response and still proceed with trying to keep me as a client. Unless you are asking me to come in again for your salon to fix your mistake, don’t ask me to come in again just to waste my time and disappoint me all over again. And honestly, don’t ever tell your clients that it will «get lighter» after 2 – 3 weeks. Your clients come in wanting a specific look. And if we are told that that look is achievable, you better damn well at least come close to it. I should not have to wait until my roots grow out until my requested hair color is finally obtained.

Sooooo glad I discovered this salon. I initially got my hair colored by another aveda salon in the city twice and both times I was unhappy with the result. Not just that, they were also way more expensive.
I decided to try some other place and I found this amazing salon. I got my hair colored by jenny. She is a rockstar ! She nailed what I envisioned. She listens to you and she provides you with inputs and collaborates with you through the process. I’m never letting go of her. :)

Hands down THE best hair experience. Salon is amazing, and Joe rocked my hair cut.

My review is for Jenny:
I had an absolutely wonderful experience at the Bryan Roberts Salon. I was a bit nervous and also prepared for multiple visits. I came into the salon with extremely long (and extremely THICK) dark BROWN hair wanting to go completely BLONDE. I wanted my hair to be as blonde as possible. I have gone from Brown and Blonde many times in my life and always have had a similar experience. I usually am told because of how thick and long my hair is, it would take multiple visits to achieve a full blonde look… always costing me a fortune for multiple visits and being charged extra for «time» at other salons, I was worried of what to expect from my experience at Bryan Roberts Salon yesterday.
My experience was far different than usual. Jenny was not only extremely nice, she was so so talented and patient with my hair. She told me she would do everything she could do not only achieve my blonde look, but to keep my hair healthy during the process. Yes, I did spend the entire day there… but that is because Jenny took the TIME to actually get my hair where I wanted it rather than turning me away and telling me to come back.
The staff was so sweet and attentive during my time at the salon. They brought me water, mimosas, magazines and constantly were checking in to see if I needed anything. I found everyone there to be caring and passionate about what they were doing.
At the end of my appointment when I saw the results, I was truly in shock what Jenny was able to do. I am so so SOOOO happy with it and highly recommend her for all services. For the first time, I don’t need to go back to achieve what I want! I will never go back to another salon after my experience with Jenny at Bryan Roberts. These Unilocal reviews are what got me in the salon… and now, I am officially a client. Jenny is truly talented and a really great stylist. Big thumbs up!
