Delancy Street Christmas Trees

Now, they take credit cards!
For the past 6 or 7 years, we have been getting our tree from Delancey. The trees come from Oregon, are super fluffy and smell so good! The staff is always very helpful: they packed the tree so it would not scratch our car, and tied it nicely the car. Everything was done while we were paying, so we were in and out in about 10 minutes. We had the stand from last year, but not with us. They explained how to set up the tree, and offer to set it up for us if we could not do it. Excellent experience overall!

Do yourself a favor and just donate money to Delancy and let them keep the tree. I purchased one last year from them and it wasn’t cheap. That was fine and all but after they cut the trunk I took it home and put it in water and the thing never drank a drop. Within a week it was dead and a total FIRE HAZARD. I was bummed and it had me on fire watch for the entire season. Don’t do it.

These guys are great. All the men working there have an incredibly positive attitude and make everyone buying a tree feel like they’re part of something special. When the guys each other, they couldn’t be more polite as well. Yeah the tree and stand will set you back $ 100, but before you comlain, remember, it goes to a good cause. And if you’re buying a tree for you and your family, you’re already more well off than so many others out there. Enjoy giving back a bit.

Folks, this lot HAS MOVED!!! It is now located on 25^th and Castro, in the parking lot of a middle school.
Now on to the good stuff.
I’ve heard of Delancey for the 13 years I’ve lived in the city but had never checked them out. Finally, this year we ventured out and made the extra trek to Noe Valley for our tree. There Javier and the amazing team helped us find the perfect tree. Javier was super personable and filled us in on all the great work that Delancey does, not only through their tree lots, but through their moving company and restaurants.
Having no idea how much tree cost these days, we were expecting to pay much more, and consequently found Delancey’s prices reasonable. And after hearing what the proceeds go towards, well, we were very happy to contribute to the good cause. We had such a pleasant experience, we will definitely be back next year.

This is the 2^nd year buying my xmas tree from this place. I love the concept of employing people who would otherwise be without a job.

Saturday night, 5 pm had this brilliant idea to go out and pick out a Christmas tree.
Didn’t bother looking out the window to check the weather, just threw a jacket and was out the door.
When I went downstairs, I realized that it was pouring rain. But too late, I was on a mission, so there was no turning back now.
The driver laughed at me and said, «when I got the call saying that someone wanted to be picked up to go get a Christmas tree in this storm I thought they were crazy.»
Up ahead you could see the Christmas lights and the entrance. «That must be it!»
We drove right into Pier 32 and there’s a parking right in front so you can load in your tree once you pick it out.
A guy in rain coat and rain boots came right out to help me.
«What type of tree are you looking for?»
«A tree about my height I guess, and a little one too please»
He picked out a perfect noble fir tree, and showed me a few Charlie Brown trees within minutes. Another team of guys broke out the chain saw and freshly cut the bottoms to fit the water bowl/​stand, wrapped them in plastic bags, and loaded them into the car. Even bought a mistletoe and wreath!

It’s a nice tree lot at Castro & Market. Trees are on the expensive side but it’s convenient and for a cause. People are friendly and helpful. I’ve been 3 years in a row now and will go again next year.
Tips to know:
–Their hours are 7am to 10pm
–The parking lot entrance is on Sanchez north of Market
–They are cash/​check only
–Their stock seems to be entirely Noble Fir

We buy our tree here every year. People are friendly and helpful. Lots of choice. Trees are fresh. Prices are fine. We recommend.

I am lucky that the tree lot is only a block from my house so every year this is the place we get our tree. They have an amazing selection of sizes and the trees are healthy & sustainably harvested.
This year I found the perfect tree and it is now in my living room and beautifully decorated and I am one happy lady.
Oh and, who cares if you can get a tree somewhere else cheaper? The money goes to a great cause and the men that work here are very nice (they even put the foot on it for us!) I am happy to help an organization with such wonderful values.

I love getting my trees from Delancey, mostly because it’s a good cause, but also because the workers are always good-​natured and eager to help. This year we picked up a tree on Sunday afternoon and got a spot in their little parking lot. I had to seek out help to get a tree, but the wait wasn’t so bad. The trees last a long time too.

Love it, this is the first real tree for me in like 18 years. 2 feet tall, smells nice, carried it home. Got the fire-​proofing, and that made them assume this was for a business but I told them I’m just paranoid about bringing the forest, and her fires, into my home. Only $ 6 extra b/​c I didn’t need this red-​tag certification thing. When Christmas is over, we’ll see how «flame retardant» this firry bundle of joy really is. $ 39 out the door (including the flame retardant shower), with this little dog bowl stand with these pegs to make the tree stand up straight.

I miss the old Hayes Valley space– it was bigger and easier to find trees. There’s a few parking spaces in the tree lot but it’s sooo crowded. I love these guys, and they’re very friendly, but they really need more staff. Customers were getting really short tempered waiting for someone to help them find a tree, waiting to pay, and then waiting for their tree to be ready. A lot of waiting!
We went the Sunday after Thanksgiving mid-​day and it was a mad-​house… but for the 2^nd yr in a row we left with a great looking 10 ft tall tree :)
Remember it’s CASH ONLY– Get there early, claim your tree, have cash ready, and wait for your tree to be cut.
Bonus points if you bring a huge plastic bag (and a truck) with you to wrap it in, to eliminate transport woes.

A disappointment!
The prices are unchanged from last year, which would be okay, except I’ve read about the crash in the tree market this year. THAT would be okay because of the good cause, except there was no chemistry in the lot this year.
The $ 50 delivery fee is a stumbling block, and this year the lot man told us how it wasn’t his decision but a corporate one. (How big is Delancy, anyway?) Even that would have been tolerable, but the rationale we were told for the hefty fee was that two men were being taken from the lot. And, only the one man brought the tree in the truck to our front door.
So, the glow is off. Maybe it’s the economy that gets me wondering whether the price is worth it. Should we buy more reasonable and make a charitable tax-​deductible gift with the money we save?

So I bought 2 trees here, one for my home and one for my work. The work tree needed to be fire-​retardant as it’s a public place [a pub] and away they sprayed.
On Friday night shortly after a bus full of revelers packed the place up, a bored fire marshal decided that the tree was not fire-​retarded properly, we had a certificate saying it was, but alas no date on it rendered it void.
So, the tree got taken down and back to delancey street we went. Delancey street were happy to give us a new tree SUPER fire retardant and certificate for free.
In a stressful time of year to shop, Delancey Sreet could not make things easier.

or DSCTL, as i like to call it. reminds me of bob ross painting happy little trees everywhere with happy little tree lot attendants and happy, be-​scarved couples with happy, gurgling babies and happy lights and happy, happy, everywhere! we took the happiest tree in the lot straight into our living room. the whole process took under 10 mins! and the LED lights look fantastic. i love feeling festive.

I never really realized it, but Christmas tree lots are the sort of thing that you only really know where to go if you’ve lived in an area for a while. But thanks to Unilocal,which makes a local out of any yokel, I found this one!
The setting is a bit surreal: within sight of the crowdgazers at Metro, and next door to Asqew (whose chalkboard read «Beer: It’s What You Should Be Drinking Right Now» on one side, and «Eat Beef: Put It In Your Mouth» on the other), inset about twelve feet below street level. It’s kind of oddly terraced, and one of the concrete retaining walls is pained to look like a sky scene of blue with clouds, which would be kind of neat, except you can tilt your head about 20 degrees upward and see the same thing.
But anyway, you don’t go to a tree lot for the ambiance, you go for trees. Not as big a selection as I’m used to in the suburban lots of youth: about five or ten to choose from in every height range, and any kind you want as long as you want noble fir. We sprung for the 7 – 8 footer at $ 89 (the 8 – 9 would have looked better in our blessedly large place but at $ 120, that’s quite the premium).
Now, I don’t know if you know about Delancey Street: they’re a cool organization that runs a café, a moving service, and apparently tree lots, all staffed by folks who are looking to turn their lives around. The gentlemen who helped were quite friendly, knowledgeable, and kind of funny. When they hauled our bagged-​up tree to my roommate’s Lotus and plopped the sucker on top, they advised us not to go over 60.
If you live anywhere in the north half of the Mission, you probably heard an enormous FLAPFLAPFLAP as we hurtled down the road, me hanging on to the tree for dear life as the bag made for quite a sail. Funny experience transporting a tree in a convertible!

I bought my tree here this year — it was cheap & really fresh. Also, I really appreciated the fact that the workers there seemed pleased to have you there in the the lot. They greet you, help you find the perfect tree & even carry it to your car.
