La De Da Bakery

They have great French macaroons and other baked goods, but their service sucks. Both times I’ve gone in, the staff was cold at best. Today I went in to get some salted caramel macaroons for my grandmother since she just got out of surgery and I thought a sweet treat might be nice. Not knowing what time they opened (I hoped 10 or 11 like many downtown businesses), I walked down on my break– 11:40. They didn’t open until 12pm, ok my fault, I should’ve checked. I went back at my next available time, 4:30. When I asked if they had any salted caramel macaroons, she said only for farmers market. Farmers market doesn’t start selling until exactly 6:10, which I didn’t have the time to stay for. When I told her they were my grandma’s favorite and she just got out of surgery she still wouldn’t sell them to me. I am a pretty annoyed by this lack of caring and customer service. I understand they probably have a certain number counted out for farmers, but they couldn’t make an exception and sell me some right there? Seems like bad business for a small shop in SLO county, which prides itself on good, caring customer service.
When I called the owner to complain about the situation, I spoke with a male, who said I had spoken to the other owner (possibly his wife). I explained that on Unilocal their hours are posted as 11am opening, and that they are hard to find due to the name change. Sugar Daddy’s to La De Da. I let him know the situation and he explained that they had a very specific inventory system for farmers market and the products were already packed up. Apparently it is too hard to replace one flavor of macaroon with another for inventory purposes just to please a customer. Don’t go here if you value spending your dollar towards good customer service.

I’ve been here a few times. Cake pops are good. Some cupcakes have been good, some just ok. I think it’s really bad customer service to make someone spend $ 5.00 to pay with a credit card. My total was $ 4.00 and I was «forced» to buy something else for $ 2.00 more that I didn’t want because there wasn’t anything that cost just $ 1.00 more. I probably won’t be back.

My daughter ordered 20 macarons and a small cake with EXPLICIT directions on how to decorate the cake for a baby shower. The small cake cost $ 45 and could have been decorated by a kindergartener! The directions were NOT followed and the cake looked terrible! We salvaged the top by placing real flowers over the atrocity. I am hoping to up load a picture, but since I’m not tech savvy, I’m not sure I’ll be able. We called the bakery to see why our directions were not followed, and what could be done. They told us to bring the cake back for a refund, but would not replace the cake. I NEEDED a cake, that did not help! Needless to say, I won’t be back! DO NOT do any special orders!!!

Sugar Daddy’s have the best cupcakes I could find in SLO. I particularly liked their chocolate rasberry cake. prices are on the steep side, but quality makes up for it. I tried their macaroons but didn’t like them as much as a french bakery I visited in L.A.

Just to be clear, this is a review for Sugar Daddy’s. I am giving this place two stars only because their baked goods are actually quite tasty. On the other hand, they’re expensive, and I have had some very poor experiences with customer service here.
The first time I bought a cake pop to go, I was told it was chocolate cake covered in chocolate ganache. When I bit into it, it was yellow cake. It was moist and very good, but not what I wanted or expected. I called to tell them they were confused, and they didn’t seem to care.
Next time I bought what was supposed to be coconut cake inside chocolate, again to go. It even had shredded coconut on top. I bit into it and yep, you guessed it, inside was yellow cake. When I called to tell them that, yet again, they didn’t know what was what, she told me I was mistaken and that their coconut cake is yellow in color. Okay, fine, but where was the coconut flavor? There was none. It was very obviously yellow cake.
Then I discovered their chewy chocolate cupcakes. These are absolutely DIVINE. I have been telling my niece she needs to try one, but every time we go in there, they don’t have them. So, yesterday after work I stopped in to get a couple so she could try one.
I walked in, and no one was behind the counter. I stood there waiting for several minutes for someone to come out at all. They obviously didn’t have what I wanted, but I was going to ask if there was some sort of schedule that they go by so I would have a better chance of finding them. When the girl finally came out, I asked if they make them and then sell out, or if they just aren’t making them lately, because I’ve been in several times and they haven’t had them. She was very rude to me, told me they change flavors all the time and that if they sell out, they sell out, but they make different flavors every day and she doesn’t know when they will have them. I said that’s too bad, because I like that one flavor and I’m always looking for it. She replied that I could order them. I said, that’s okay, I don’t want a bunch, I just want a couple of them and started to leave. As I’m walking out the door, this girl starts yelling at me that it isn’t their fault. Completely taken aback, I turn around and said, «Excuse me, what did you say?» She said, «It’s not our fault if we don’t have them, we change our flavors all the time, and I don’t understand why you’re getting mad over cupcakes.»
I wasn’t getting mad over cupcakes. I was getting mad at her attitude. Seriously? If she had just said in the first place that she was sorry they didn’t have them and was there something else I would be interested instead, I would have left, if not satisfied, at least not unhappy. Not such a bad thing if I’m not eating a cupcake, right? But instead, as I’m trying to leave, I’m being yelled at. So, yes, I DID get mad at that point.
I’ve seen great reviews on their macarons, but I have to say that I’ve tried a few of those flavors and I was not impressed. The cupcakes here are very good, but the macarons not so much.
SO, in short. If you can get past the prices and the terrible training of the employees and the confusion over what they are actually selling, then go for it. The baked goods (other than the macarons) are very good. But it’s not worth it to me to deal with the attitude I got yesterday when I stopped in. So I certainly won’t be going back, and though I HAD recommended the place to people before, I certainly won’t recommend it to anyone again!

If you are a bride looking for a bakery my advice to you is STAY AWAY from SUGAR DADDY’S!!!
I thought this shop was so cute. I made an appointment to have a cake tasting w my fiancé, mother in law to be and my mother.
They (Chris and Brenda the owners) didn’t even come out and introduce themselves.
I purchased 6 cupcakes and was even charged for two cups of coffee… for the cake tasting!!!
I don’t live in the area so all correspondence needed to happen via email.
I signed the contract, paid my money and thought I was in good hands.
After asking a few questions, a few back and forth emails with pictures… I received an email from Brenda (the owner) followed up with a phone call. She had me in TEARS! She was so awful and mean I was floored!
I actually said to her «I am paying you good MONEY to make my wedding cake and you’ve just chewed me a new ass? I’m not even sure what to do about this»
I was sad, scared I wouldn’t find another bakery and totally heartbroken that this horrible woman was going to bake something for my lovely guests for my wedding!!!
Thank goodness I found Lickety Split another LOVELY bakery in Grover Beach!
Not only were they lovely to me, gave me everything I ever wanted… they all gave me a group hug at the end of my visit!!!
Their motto… it’s the brides day!!!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stay away from Sugar Daddy’s!

The cupcakes were moist and flavorful. The girls were super helpful and friendly. Our favorites were raspberry cheesecake and coconut crème. This is also the only place in town that I can find the French version of Macaron. Prices are a little high $ 11.00 for four cupcakes but worth it as a treat.

First off, just a tad bit lame that this company has deliberately taken their name off their page. I understand many businesses do not like Unilocal,but get over it.
Next, food. I went in and purchased a cupcake to go. Pink Champagne. Not impressed. It was old. It tasted old, like it had been in the case for way too long. The cupcake was dry and lacking of any good flavor. There was an odd aftertaste one might expect from an inexpensive box mix. The worst part was the topping. Homemade marshmallow of sorts, but there was way too much gelatin in it and was «sweating» for lack of a better word. The topping was wet.
Next, pricing. Highly overpriced for what I got.
Finally, service. There was one girl working and she was way in the back when I entered the store. She didn’t even realize anyone was in the store. I had to bang my keys around for her to even realize I was there. When she finally came up front she lacked in customer service.
End result, I will not go back there. Next time I feel like a cupcake I’ll just go to a local grocery store and buy a slice of cake. If my 7 year old refuses to eat a sweet, that’s my tell to stay away in the future.

Eat them because they will definitely give you early onset Diabetes, you will go blind, have renal failure, and have to amputate something… but the deliciousness is worth it!
Eat them because they are a decadent expensive fancy-​pants sugary ultimate junk food!
Eat them because it is very likely you have never tried anything like this before in your poor pathetic life!
Eat them because they are sinful & both your MD & your local crack dealer will recommend against them because:
1) MD’s are no fun & want you to use their drugs;
2)the crack dealer will lose your business, because you will be too high, too addicted, and too broke to buy crack)!
Eat them yourself, be selfish, and what-ever-you-do…DO NOT BRING THEM to work…
because a dozen will disappear in a mini-​micro-​second!
Eat them, the pure sugar high will make you dance the
MACARON Macarena!

A Sugar Daddy who loves Sugar Daddy’s Bake Shop!

I won a package of macarons, which gave me a great excuse to go in and try a bunch of treats. The macarons were awesome, strawberry was my favorite. I tried a little cannoli, which was good. But the lemon bars won me over, hands down. They looked almost like a piece of cheesecake, and tasted amazing. They probably have an edge, seeing that they work with sugar, but it’s just so cute in there.

Sugar daddy’s Bake shop rocks! They have everything from cannolis, tarts, lemon bars and Crème Brulee to ice cream cupcakes, specialty cupcakes, macaroons and tasty cookies=) I especially love the butterscotch oatmeal cookies and the raspberry lemon tarts. They are simply amazing! If you want to treat yourself to a nice dessert or buy a cake for a special event I highly recommend going to sugar daddy’s. It’s where price meets quality!

I’m not a huge cupcake person. But I do love the occasional éclair or fruit tart or crème brûlée, yum!
So I found this place randomly and I got super excited. Got an éclair, an almond macaron with chocolate filling, and a chocolate flourless cake. The éclair was okay. It tasted refrigerated because it was but I like when they’re more room temperature and the outside is fluffy rather than stiff. However, it’s really big and can be shared with someone else. The macaron is tiny but not bad (but I’m no macaron expert – I’ve only had like one in my whole life). The chocolate flourless cake was really good. I had to bring half of it home because I got full. It’s really rich, has what tastes like a chocolate mousse on top and whipped cream on top of that. I like how it’s individual size but still big enough for two to share.
The service was great although I came near closing time so the one girl working there was in the back and hadn’t noticed I was waiting to ask for a to-​go box for a minute or two. But it’s okay, she was really friendly. I think what makes me give the 3 stars is that the prices are a bit high. I was really considering a cannoli but for almost $ 5, really? If the prices were a little lower, I’d probably give it a 4, but I might still come if I ever have a huge craving for dessert when froyo, gelato, or boba can’t cut it.
P. S. To use credit/​debit cards, minimum purchase is $ 10.

Super friendly service and THE BEST CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES!!! You can’t try them tonight cuz we bought every last one they had! Haha!

walked in to check out after eating at a nearby restaurant. noticed cookies, cupcakes and tarts. items were pricey. decided to give their Coconut Tart a try, it was pretty good, but not worth the $ 6 price-​tag.
probably won’t return, there’s other places in town with goodies for a lot less expensive. glad i tried though.
(on another note, they accept credit cards with $ 10 minimum purchase)

Got some cupcakes to take back to work and try with co-​workers. They were really not great– dry and overcooked, we were not impressed BUT after passing on our review and disappointment to an employee we were gifted with 4 fresh cupcakes a week later. They were delicious and redeemed them completely! I’m guessing when we purchased the original cupcakes it was an off day for the baker. So while my initial experience wasn’t a positive one, I now feel differently! So thank you Sugar Daddy’s for acknowledging our complaint and making it right!
I’ve also heard really good things about the other pastries from friends– so I’d like to head in sometime and give those a try!

WOW. What a dream come true. We have lots of semi-​bakeries in this town, as opposed to just bread bakeries. Most just offer snippets of baked goods and treats. Now, we are complete. This place is the only true 5 star bakery i have ever been to. Since they opened, I have been there at least once a week and have sampled a huge range of their offerings. I have never been disappointed.
I wish to comment on the poster who said the cake was from a box. I cannot imagine what she was thinking. I have never had a more perfect cake or icing, even in Europe. We just celebrated a birthday — combined it with a personal achievement event. The cake was gorgeous and chocolatey. In fact, i just told Brenda that fact yesterday. Her talent is reminiscent to me of the fine pastries we have had when visiting France and other countries. They are all light, flavor-​packed and just the right amount of sweet. From the key lime tarts, the lemon raspberry tarts (hubby’s two faves) to the entire collection of cupcakes (my faves) to the eclairs and cookies. A lively decorated, clean, perfect little confection store.
It is a treat to just walk in there and pick up some little thing to munch on while downtown. Usually, it is too difficult to decide, so i get a box of mixed items. It is also the perfect type of business for our beautiful and personal downtown. It is privately owned, non-​chain business which exemplifies the prime example of offering a great product at a great price. Brenda and Chris and staff work endlessly so we can be filled with the best desserts we have tasted. We celebrate their arrival.
I have no relationship to this business, lest anyone wonder. I found them by accident walking downtown one day. Glad I did!!!

Went here for the first time recently and they’re pretty tasty. The ganache pies are good as are their cannoli’s and eclairs with that being said I took issue with their cupcakes. The reason being is that the cake tasted like it was straight out of a Betty Crocker box and the frosting was homemade but I felt it could’ve had more taste to it. The actual look of the place is nice but a little bland.

Really, really nice staff for the two times I have been in there. They stopped and talked with us and answered all our questions. I was really impressed. So far I have just tried the pecan pie, the small personal size one. It was really good, great flavor. I only wish it was a little thicker and bigger. But otherwise it had that great pecan taste you’d expect. It would have been great with some vanilla ice cream. The other cookies, torts, pies, cupcakes, and cakes looked tasty. They even had a donut shaped cake. This place is definitely worth coming back to. Plus they have a booth at farmers market.

This place is really tasty! I had a chocolate ganash tort and a banana cupcake. Both had great presentations.
I am a big cupcake fan, so I try a lot of cupcakes (all over the area). The cake here was soft, most and tasty. The frosting was just right, not to sugary or too bland. I think the cupcake here is far tastier than the cupcakes from Cupcake on a Lark (SLO), Lickety Split (Grover) and black horse café (SLO). Enjoy Cupcake in Los Olivos is still my favorite in the area, but Sugar Daddy’s is a close second.
The tort was wonderful! I love chocolate and it was rich, creamy and perfect. I cannot wait to try more!

WOW, yummy and so so cute. The décor is darling and the baked goods divine. The baker is also the owner and very friendly… things to eat there, you can order as well. Cupcakes, pies, gluten free items, cookies… So delish and cute! A great treat and a must when you are downtown.
