Larry’s Ice Cream

By far the best icecream I’ve ever had. He makes it himself and it has a very distinct, thick texture. The flavors are very rich. I had Oreo, Decadent chocolate, mint chip, cappuccino chip, coffee, and strawberry cheesecake. I see other reviews say the prices are too much, but it is Washington D.C. and its homemade delicious Icecream. I believe it was $ 5.49 for two generous scoops. I got 6 scoops since it was my last day in D.C. That’s how good it was. Larry is a funny, old *******. If you get offended easily, get over it and go get the best icecream ever made.

Rudest staff, small portions, decent ice cream — a complete rip off. I will never go back. Go to Thomas Sweets instead… Or anywhere else.

They try to rush their customers effectively acting as if they’re always busy. The owner is rude. Patience is needed for the level of lack of respect he demonstrates. The ice cream is standard like any other store, but priced very expensive. I wouldn’t go there for ice cream. Not worth it.

Homemade ice cream at its finest! If you love ice cream, Larry’s is NOT to be missed. My family and I highly recommend the mocha chip, rocky road and chocolate chocolate chip. The staff is friendly and the scoops are generous. We will be back.

The flavors they have ar3 not that great. Most of them are artificial flavor. It’s way too expensive for the quality and amount to be worth it. The scoops are not even close to being actual full scoops and they cost 6.50? Not even close to being worth it.

This place was recommended on other websites. The lesson learned: don’t listen to other websites. Frozen vanilla yogurt is bland. Salted caramel ice cream was bland. There was a ribbon of caramel, but no flavor. The Oreo ice cream is simply that. Oreo. Lastly, I have no idea who Larry is, but he sure as hell can’t work a basic register. Three items and it came to $ 1661.35. Really? There’s a smoothie place two doors down. I bet they’re better.

Absolutely delicious! I normally don’t pick chocolate flavors but the taste was too perfect to pass up. If you can try the Decadence! It has truffle in it! The guys behind the counter are super sweet too.

A little pricey for a scoop of ice cream, and I was excited to take home some baklava when I saw they had some but really expensive, 4 pieces for about $ 6? No thank you :(. Otherwise the quality of the ice cream isn’t too bad, and the place has a nice friendly neighborhood feel to it.

Absolutely delicious ice cream. I got the salted caramel and peanut butter cup and they were both so good. I heard people raving about the cupcakes during my trip so I went back the next day. Melt in your mouth awesomeness!

Larry’s is ice cream… it isn’t terrible… but it isn’t rave worthy. It’s forgettable in every way except for the fact that it is extremely overpriced. Tried the Black Forest and Banana Split, but ended up getting one cup with a small scoop of rum raisin and small scoop of black forest with sprinkles. Another small cup of chocolate. Total was $ 13. EXTREMELY OVERPRICED. GO ELSEWHERE like froZENyo.

$ 6 for a small cup of vanilla ice cream is a bit criminal but I mean it’s DC so what do you expect. I can’t say for sure if I’ll come back because I know so many other places exactly like this that are about the same quality. Also, Terence got more hot fudge on his cup than I did in a clear display of bias. But it’s fine. The ice cream is good and you get a free coffee if you check in via Unilocal

Just finished indulging on the desserts at Larrys. I can recommend most of the treats because we bought a little of everything!!!

Meh. I mean, it’s cool for what it is. Nothing particularly special about the ice cream selection or shop. A kiddie cone is $ 5…so yah… overpriced.

This place was. whatevs.
I came here with my friend and she didn’t want to share, so I was forced to pay $ 5 for the smallest size scoop. Sigh. I got the lavender on a sugar cone (asked for a cake cone but I don’t think he heard) and it was decent ice cream — not $ 5 worth, though. The guy helping us behind the counter picked up the phone multiple times while helping us out, which normally would be fine, but they were pretty long conversations that kept us waiting quite a bit. Reading through other reviews now, I wish I had tried one of the cupcakes instead!

As a frequent visitor to the city, I come here many times, because they are open until late. The ice cream is good quality, but the owner is ornery and one day I will stop coming here (though it is open until late) because the vibe sucks here.

This is some d*** good ice creams & the cupcakes are also incredible. Icecream: Plenty of scrumptious flavor and great, unique & homemade flavors. Cupcakes: Probably the best I’ve ever had. Perfectly moist & rich but not too rich.
This is a great place for a date and a must if you’re just stopping in and you’re from out of town.
It is all very expensive so just be ready to spend $ 7 on a SMALL cup of ice cream. But I say it’s worth it. Ice cream is MY guilty pleasure :)

Family-​owned bakery and ice cream shop with a neighborhood feel. They had a great selection of sweets and very tasty ice cream. The milk shakes and ice cream were a bit on the pricey side, but you get a lot of flavors to choose from.
Although ice cream is their specialty, they also had homemade baklava, yogurt, and floats and ice cream splits. Worth stopping into if you are in the neighborhood, but not worth making a special trip to visit.

I love here’s oreo ice-​cream. It is significant flavor of this ice-​cream store. But there is limited place to seat.

For what you’re paying, I would have expected some seriously good ice cream. This stuff isn’t any better than the generic stuff you buy at the grocery store. Maybe it was just my flavor (crème de Menthe). Oh well, I’m not going back. I suggest you don’t go either.

Great ice cream spot in DuPont circle that I found through Unilocal on a trip to DC. The flavors are unique and can make for some fun combinations. I tried the cinnamon oatmeal cookie dough and the Fred and Ginger (peach and ginger flavor) together. These two mixed tasted like a ginger snap! My girlfriend had the key west chocolate and lavender with hot fudge. The key west chocolate included chocolate ice cream, OJ, and chocolate pieces. It tasted like a chocolate orange. Chocolate pieces balanced the orange nicely. The lavender was very refreshing and not overpowering. Hot fudge was more of a warmed chocolate sauce as it was thin but still good. Friendly service and seating area tables were not sticky.

I had a scoop of Ginger and Fred, peachy gingery ice cream and so delicately flavored. A little pricey at $ 4+ a scoop, but very good. A nice cool treat on a hot afternoon. The cupcakes looked very yummy, but I had to resist.

I asked to sample since it was my first time in the store. After the second one, the owner said, «you choose ice cream like you were choosing a husband.» I was immediately put off by this attitude.
After my friend pleaded that she didn’t want to eat alone, I ended up getting a cup. So I can attest to the fact that there is nothing extraordinary, or special about the ice cream. I didn’t even bother remembering what flavor I had that day, because I have no intention of ever coming back whatsoever. I just remember the distasteful remark he made.
I understand that he was trying to deter me from trying the ice cream and then walking away. I also understand that he has a business to run. But by creating an unpleasant — you can say rude — impression, he would have lost the sale I was going to make that day, surely the future sales from the people that I would otherwise refer to his shop.
Larry’s ice cream may be as good as or even better than Dolcezza, but I will always take my out-​of-​town guests to Dolcezza or other places, because their service are more pleasant there. I know his shop has been serving long-​time customer base in the area, or may even be at the right place for some tourists.
It’s time to adjust to higher customer service standard, because there are so many existing and potential businesses willing to fill that gap.

The homemade ice cream here is excellent.
The shopkeeper… kind of a kill-​joy (didn’t seem very happy and was a bit unpleasant).
I love ice cream… good ice cream, that is. Living in a city currently (Virginia Beach) who’s food is so consistently bad, when you suddenly arrive in a city where the food is so consistently good, you take notice and want to heap on the praise (lol).
The shop was SPOTLESS… which is a very good thing considering that it is a basement shop and the outside is less than appealing (old city, old buildings).
You have no idea of how cute the place is and how good the ice cream is until you take the leap, enter the outside doorway and walk down about 4 – 5 steps into this little basement shop.
And guess what? They don’t just serve ice cream… they’ve got homemade cupcakes (some of the best I’ve tasted), homemade baklava, giant homemade chocolate chip blondie-​brownie-​cookie things (lol) and homemade sorbets.
Not a lot of space to eat down there (2 little tables by the basement window in front of the shop — inside), but if you aren’t carrying a lot with you, go get yourself a scoop or two and start walking down the street licking!
You’re going to pay for the pleasure, but go ahead and do it because unless you have a homemade ice cream maker and can effortlessly come up with the creamy, dense, dreamy concoctions Larry’s Homemade Ice Cream has, you’d be missing out.

About a 2 – 2.5: After having a little dinner date in the area, my friends and I came to check out Larry’s Ice Cream. I’d heard about this DC favorite that has been around for about 30 years, so I was really excited to try them out. Besides a large selection of different-​flavored ice cream, they also offered yogurt, homemade baklava (made by Larry’s wife), coffee, and tea. Peruse the flavors at your leisure, and don’t be afraid to ask for some samples. I tried the Crème de Menthe Chocolate Chip (crème de menth liqueur and chocolate chips) and the Banana Split (banana bits, cherries, and chocolate fudge); both were a little less solidified and had a slight grainy taste to them. The hubs had Oreo, with little chunks of Oreo cookies throughout, which tasted more PB-​like than the typical cookies n’ cream. Mr. Larry, the owner (also known as the ‘Scoop Nazi’), had a very loud and fun personality and a great sense of humor — he joked about the cup sizes he offered and we had a great ol’ time: D We also picked up some of the homemade baklava (the walnut and the pistachio); I was a little disappointed that there weren’t any cupcakes, as I’d heard that those are pretty good as well. There are some tables within to enjoy your treat or you can take it to-​go. Located downstairs off of Connecticut, this may be one of the few dessert places that are opened for a frozen treat, but better ones are found elsewhere!

My friend came to this shop for the first time. She wanted to try a few flavors because it was her first time in the store and they have some pretty exotic flavors. She asked to try her fourth flavor when the shopkeeper cut her off and said they don’t do that and literally claimed it was because he had to care for his back — she assured him she was buying the Adult size and so he allowed her number 4.
She began to order when two ladies right behind us began to walk out — they were the end of the line as the place wasn’t crowded — at which point he cut my friend’s order off, told her «see what you did», ran over to the two women leaving and insisted on taking their order. I intervened at this point because what he did was incredibly rude, at which point the other customer called my friend «spoiled» and declared trying so many flavors «is not her right» — she’s got a point, the Constitution specifically leaves out ice cream sampling.
My friend started to pay and I sat with my friends. I looked over a minute later, and my friend was crying as she tried to pay the counter man — she was still being berated by the other customer which the man was doing nothing about. At this point I couldn’t take my friend being treated so poorly and demanded we leave and told him I would be spreading the word of his horrible service — so he gave her the ice cream for free.
As for ice cream quality, it is quite delicious warranting it two stars. My friend says all samples were delicious as well. Up to you, but I would hope a store owner would treat his customers more like people and less like payees.

Whoa. The prices are CRAZY expensive for the quantity you receive! I was really disappointed when they rung us up for two ice cream cones and it was $ 14.00… Whhhhhhat.
Ok, so the ice cream itself was really tasty! I had one (very small and overpriced) scoop of the oatmeal cookie dough chocolate chip ice cream and it was extremely good. The chunks of cookie dough were numerous and the ice cream was perfectly creamy. I could have gotten a pint of it and worked through it pretty quickly. It was scrumptious!
My boyfriend had a double scoop of the mocha chip. I like coffee ice cream but the espresso was so strong it’s like a punch to the face (in a good way if that is possible?).
In all honesty the ice cream was very tasty, but I just can’t get over the prices. I don’t know if I’ll be back any time soon. It’s crappy because this is the only hand scooped ice cream place near DuPont circle :(.

It’s an ice cream parlor that also has some homemade cupcakes… made by Mrs. Larry. Once they’re out, they are gone for the day.
The ice cream is tasty. According to the name, it’s homemade. In truth, I think the ice cream is ok. It’s hard to tell it’s anything better than your standard Ben & Jerry’s. Only difference to me was the price. Larry’s was just a couple dollars more expensive.
I tried the cupcakes too. I am always on the hunt for a better cupcake. I tried a red velvet… cupcake staple. It’s ranks below Georgetown Cupcake, which I think ranks below both Baked & Wired and Sprinkles.
As for Larry, he is kind of funny. He walks the line between rude and old-​man charming. My buddy found him rude, but I think his schtick is harmless and mildly amusing. Overall, I won’t repeat but not because of Larry. The ice cream’s not as good as Thomas Sweet in Georgetown. Unfortunately, the cupcakes aren’t too hot either.

Went here even though some of the reviews noted rude service. 1. Service was great. It’s a ice cream shop so not alot of back and forth for me. I’m pretty much a ice cream aficionado so if something peaks my interest I just asked to try. The young ladies in front of me tried a bunch of flavors and the guy was friendly and patient with them. 2. I tried the Kahlua something and the Crème de Menthe (mint chocolate chip) both were good but the Mint was really good. Mint should be clean and refreshing and this one was. The ice cream was creamy but not milky and definitely better quality than mass produced brands. 3. Was it the best ice cream I’ve ever had, nope, but it is a worthy contender and they have some creative flavors.
Service note: The guy who served me said thank you, smiled, and made me feel like I would definitely come back. As I was leaving he was waiting on customers but he said bye again and have a goodnight. I walked in expecting attitude but I was met and left with pleasantries.

Certainly it’s an ice cream shop, but did you know they sell cupcakes here?
My coworker got me a red velvet cupcake with chocolate ganache from here and it was mediocre as far as cupcakes go. I found it to be a bit on the drier side but not bad.
I need to come back sometime to: 1) get the ice cream as that’s what it’s obvious specialty is, and 2) try the mango cupcake.

We just finished eating at a restaurant at Dupont, and looked around for a place to get a quick dessert. Larry’s popped up pretty up on the list, so we decided to check them out.
The place was a really small, cozy establishment, an ice cream parlor you’d see in a movie set in the 70s. They had a wide selection of flavors, from the classic cookie dough to the unique key west chocolate. The prices for the cone and the bowl were the same, so I got a cone with a scoop of «decadence», a combination of bittersweet chocolate, fudge, chocolate, and more chocolate.
The decadence ice cream had a really firm, putty like consistency. It felt like I was eating a mix of a tootsie roll and ice cream. For me, I thought it tasted fine, but some others in my group complained. I really enjoyed the flavor I chose, which tasted like chocolate bliss. Serving portions were still nice, even if you get a cone. My ice cream came with a nice muffin top bulging over the sides.
The reason why I gave this place 2 stars is because of the customer service. The man behind the counter was pretty rude, and urged us to hurry and complained when he messed up our order. I also showed him the Unilocal coupon for a free coffee if you check in, and he refused that it was correct and denied me of it. I don’t think it was worth the money to go to this place.
