Wheaton Sport Center

I didn’t think I would ever love a fitness center more than I loved Edwards in Woodridge, but then I joined the WSC. This is more than a fitness center– it has the feel of a community center with a swim team, tournaments and tennis club. The group exercise schedule is impressive.
I love to swim and there is always an open lane. The showers are clean. The spa is nice too. If you live in or around Wheaton, this is the only fitness center you need to look at.

Pricewise, it’s very comparable to Lifetime in Warrenville. Depending on what amenities you care about, there are some differences — WSC of course has the indoor/​outdoor tennis courts and a very small indoor track (half the size of Rush Copley Healthplex if I remember right). Lifetime has the outdoor pool. If you love fitness classes, this is pretty much fitness class heaven. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a schedule packed with so many options.
The staff is very professional and pleasant, they have always been helpful when I’ve asked questions. Memberwise, most are pretty friendly.
I used to have a schedule where I could come on weekday mornings, which is often a quieter time for gyms. Not so much here. Lots of mid morning classes and socializing out in the lounge area. 9 AM in my experience gets pretty slammed. There are quite a few classes and they all get out at the same time, I’ve had to stand in line for a while for showers. It seems like they could have used some more shower stalls when they redid the locker rooms, though I guess there’s only so much room to put things like that. Hair dryers too can get hard to come by when they get slammed — not sure I’ve ever run into a problem getting a hair dryer in a gym locker room before joining there.
Overall it’s pretty busy a fair amount, but usually not obnoxiously so. Some classes, particularly in the mornings, require early registration as they fill up easily.
The weight area is really nice with many options though can be pretty crowded at certain times. There is a decently sized floor area closer to the cardio machines as well for more free form exercise.
Once you join, you don’t get a bajillion phone calls and emails trying to push more services and options.
Rush Copley Healthplex remains my favorite gym ever, but this one probably reminds me of it the most. I cancelled because my employer will pay 100% of my membership if I go to Lifetime, but I truly like this place better.

Truly the best gym in the area. The classes are terrific. They are challenging and they will really keep you in shape. The instructors are excellent. Love this place!

Overall it is a very good club. It is not perfect, but the equipment, staff, and pool are excellent.

I used to be a member of this gym when I lived in Wheaton, and they are pretty nice. The place was always clean, and the people there are friendly. I loved using the racquetball courts, nice place for tennis, and the gym itself is large enough to handle quite a few people. It is a little expensive, but it is a high class place, so if you can afford it, and you are going to use it, then you should make this place your gym.

I played tennis when I was in my late 20’s and then couldn’t play for several years.
At that time I was in a travel team, and went to a lot of different clubs. Move to 2010, and I was looking for a workout place, and found WSC. AND TENNIS!!! I had joined 2 different clubs in the meantime, and they were not for me. I almost gave up.
This is the best club I have ever been because they have 14 tennis courts, «clay» courts, and over 100 classes to choose from if I want to do cardio, zumba, etc. You don’t even have to sign up for most classes. Walk in! They also have a very friendly staff, coffee and lounge area, sauna, pool, hot tub, whew! For one low cost a month, all inclusive.
You probably think I work there, but no. Just happy to be able to work out at my level, and find some friendly faces to play tennis with. They welcome older people like me, who are not looking for muscles, just keeping healthy.

the locker rooms, common areas and equipment areas are always clean and well kept and there’s always plenty of staff around to help. There’s plenty of equipment to choose from which is always nice since who has time to wait for a machine to open up. My only complaint is the price. Even for one person to be a member seems to be outrageous.

Really nice, traditional style health club. Large lounge with Wi-​Fi, tvs, seating and beverages as well as wall ball courts, tennis, pools/​spa, private workout rooms, weight and machine rooms. There are plenty of machines all the time and several tvs to keep you occupied while working out. There is also an indoor track, which is great for those of us who don’t like the treadmill. The staff is friendly as well. The locker rooms are large and clean. I never had any trouble getting a locker and they have several amenities such as: family changing area, private showers, toiletries and blow dryers. They also have massages and salon services available.

Been going for awhile now. Great club, just about everything I could ask for. Only reason not five stars is that they just did a locker room overhaul and it’s not much nicer than when it began.
Other than that, day care is awesome, weight room more than adequate (could use an olympic lifting pad so minor dropping of weight doesn’t shake the building), cardio room is great and even has a view. Really great open area for doing stretching or body weight only workouts.
I’d say if you need the day care to watch your kid while you workout, this place is super high value. Without that, there are better options in town for just weights and cardio equipment.

High end athletic center /​gym /​workout place. I was here to watch a tennis match and it’s one of the most comfortable racquet clubs I’ve been to. Elevated viewing deck, lots of comfortable leather chairs; first class all the way.

After being a member for more than a year now, I must admit I still find this is my favorite gym I have been a part of. Recently my wife has been working with a trainer, Becca, one on one and has really enjoyed it. My kids love coming with us and being in the childcare room while we work out and then jumping into the heated pool with us after. There’s also lots of fun summer activities that will be starting soon and my son loves the Friday night movie nights. The locker rooms are also currently being renovated and should be incredible when complete. Love WSC!!!

Not everything is perfect. the indoor running track is hazardous. But overall a very well run place with great, friendly staff and excellent equipment.
I don’t play tennis but am told the facilities are very good.
The class schedules are very good, offering plenty of options. in several different studios. The have a mind/​body studio (yoga — pilates etc…) which I avoid like the plague because not only do I look stupid doing that stuff… IT HURTS!
The weight room has a bevvy of benches, a great assortment of dumbells (the ones you lift, not the ones lifting them) and loads of machines. Pick heavy things up and put them back down again… feel pretty good about yourself!
The open floor areas can get kind of crowded, but you can always find a place to get your stretch on.
Spacious locker rooms with a large assortment of toiletries.
Free coffee and a great lounge make for a great finish to a great workout.

We’ve been members of WSC for over six years and are big fans. The staff is wonderful — from the front desk people who always engage you with a smile to the trainers who are plentiful and professional. While I’m not an expert in all the types of equipment that exist it would be tough to imagine machines or gear the WSC doesn’t have. My only negative comment in this arena is that sometimes the machines are down for maintenance for more time than seems necessary. For example, two of the four expresso bikes have been down for several weeks.
Reading the comments of others who talk about the suburban stereotypes is funny to me. If you don’t like the suburban stereotypes then don’t go to a fitness/​tennis club in Wheaton. What do you expect? Are there annoying people at WSC; sure. But there are wonderful people there as well who are inspiring and friendly and supportive.
If you want a full-​service fitness experience that works hard to develop a sense of community amongst its members WSC is for you.

We love WSC — the childcare is worth it alone. I have enjoyed a variety of classes, the people are nice, and the staff is always friendly. Before joining (about 2 years ago), I had never been a member of a gym and was a little intimidated. I felt comfortable starting my workout routine here, and I am healthier for it! Only reason not 5 stars is b/​c the locker rooms are pretty dated and could stand a facelift.

With the exception of the Northern Illinois University Yordon Center, this is the nicest facility I have had the opportunity to work out. Multiple treadmills, AMTs, ellipticals, and bikes for the cardio-​obsessed middle aged mom who goes to lunch every day after a steam, spin, and swim at the good ol’ WSC.
This is suburbia at its finest. Rich dads trying to relive their glory days by bench pressing (and only bench pressing), talking about their sons off at college doing great on a certain Division III Football team (see Wheaton, North Central, Illinois Wesleyan). Cougars doing bent over row while having a conversation about having people over for Thanksgiving/​Christmas/​Arbor Day while talking about the latest episode of «The Talk» and how the heck is Sharon Osbourne still around? Don’t forget the 15 – 22 year old boys talking about college, drinking, and bench pressing while downing their protein shakes! Also, who could forget typically shy girl from high school using her favorite treadmill to burn off that vodka cranberry last night at the local watering hole. That’s the typical clientele of the WSC. White collar and generally bloviating about something! Make sure you avoid these types of people, although Saturday mornings, week day mornings, and week day evenings… this is what you will get! How could I forget the geriatric club? There are SO many old people here but they are very cordial and usually compliment my brother and I on the intesn
Don’t even get me started on the tennis/​racquetball all stars. These people think they’re the next Venus Williams or Andy Roddick.
That isn’t to say the staff is the same way… from the front desk, child care, fitness, and tennis… these people generally care about their members.
I miss this place so much! I don’t miss dealing with the snotty members. I should say, NOT ALL members are like that, but a large majority are!
I feel like people are really judgmental in gyms; this place is no exception!

I’ve been a member since 2003 (wow). WSC helped me transform my 250 lbs figure into a 180 lbs mean machine (although not eating pizza, pasta, and other crappy food everyday helped)
The staff is very friendly and personable.
The only negative here is the some of the fellow members. Some feel they have a sense of entitlement for reasons that are beyond me. Every single gym stereotype exists here, including the rich wives club, the old guys who have no shame, and the middle aged women who spend 8 hours in the lounge everyday laughing obnoxiously at things that aren’t really that funny.
That being said, I love the WSC. It’s pricey yes; but I’m much more comfortable here than a place liek Cardinal, where they are a bit overzealous.

Typical but nice, hugely oversold. Cannot get a parking spot attar times. Is there ever a membership cap? Nope, what a joke!

We love the WSC. The consistently caring and patient child care staff is sincere. It is what has us so loyal to the center. Knowing we have a child care option that is so kind to our kids in that well kept setting is worth every penny. The facilities are ample and well cared for. We have had to bring laptops in to check on things for work while fitting in a work out and trading off with kids. It is exactly as we have hoped for a wellness plan. With the tennis plus, each adult got plenty of guest passes per year.
That’s great for out-​of-​town visitors or clients.
I recently scheduled a manicure and found the spa friendly, easy in and out and a fair price. The family swimming/​therapy pool has been an uplifting activity especially in the winter months.
Love to see all ages just engaged and socializing. Positive.
A con? You might have to circle the parking area if you arrive in the morning when a few classes begin. It’s never taken us more than a few minutes. Locker room etiquette varies on the time of day and the brashness of the individual – which on the odd occasion can be quite brazen. No biggie.

I belonged to several gyms/​health clubs & this one for 5 years & this is by far the best. great weight training area, spa, machines, treadmills… Locker room are very good, steam room excellent… Pool is well maintained… Tennis courts are exceptional but sometimes hard to reserve… it is not the east bank club nor does it try to be… this club is for tennis & fitness. It offers a wide variety of yoga, cardio classes etc… too at convenient times.

We were members at this club and had to leave two years ago because our son was born with special needs. They recently ran a promotion in Oct. that we were emailed and were really excited to be able to rejoin at a reduced rate. When we went to join, they did not honor half the promotion because it was a mistake on their part. The sad thing is that they said that they have to «keep the doors» open and they aren’t a «big chain club». I guess with all the recent expansion and upgrades at the club, that they are hurting financially.

We love this place. The childcare is what really made us sign on here at WSC… it is awesome. It is big enough to accommodate, yet small enough not to lose your kid in the shuffle (like at another place we visited)…the other benefit is that you can bring your child in for 2 hours at a time and with a 4 hour span in between, you can bring them in for another 2 hours in the same day… which may not sound like a big deal to some, but it was to us… sometimes my classes are during the day, and then my husband and I want to come back later…
The fitness area has all the machines that we need to use…(and I don’t know why a previous poster had such an issue with the ‘blocked off’ personal training area… you are not missing out on anything, it’s just an empty floor!) We never came across a ‘list of dont’s…and all the employees have been nice and welcoming and helpful. I also have never felt the ‘cliques’ in the place either… and am sorry that he feels that way. (and I myself am a lower, common people…) ha!
Anyway…the classes are great! They have a lot of classes that offer much needed variety to your routines… and the indoor lap pool is wonderful! I swim almost every day now, rain or shine! I can’t say enough good things (so far…) about this place.

This is a really good place to work out or play. There are lots of good camps and there is good quality equiptment. The child care is also good, little kids have lots of fun there. And the pool is a good size. Also they have lots of diferent equiptment so you can do any sportl

What a great place. State of the art equipment, beautiful indoor pool, tennis courts abound, friendly staff, awesome childcare… it just works.
There’s always sign-​up specials going on and not having to sign any long-​term contract is a bonus. And the monthly fees are reasonable, too.
I find the tennis pros they have on hand to be knowledgeable and work very well with my 7yr old. The courts can be difficult to reserve during the peak hours but the online signup system makes it easy.
The pool area consists of a lap pool (cold), another pool for the kids that’s nice and heated and has a slide that they’ll turn on upon request, and a couple of jacuzzis. I’ve also taken my son for swim lessons here and felt it was worth it. Great place to go during the 6 months of winter when Rice/​Northside are closed so your kids can get some exercise and keep up with the swimming.
You can reserve time at the childcare on the fly (doesn’t have to be days in advance) for up to 2 hours at a time which is plenty of time to do your thing. The childcare staff seems friendly and there’s never a shortage of games to play. My 4yr old girl even used to cry when it was time for her to leave.
The only complaint I would have is that it seems there were a ton of new signups recently (Jan09) and I’ve had to wait some (never more than 5 – 10 mins) to get on a treadmill. Have never had that happen until recently.
Still, if you live anywhere near WSC, you owe it to yourself to sign up!
