Double lucky is literally a door in an alleyway, albeit a really cool arty alleyway, in Leederville. It is one of, if not, the smallest bars in Perth, its dark, dingy, loud and my god is it fucking hot in there. The décor is pretty cool with its old school theme but that’s one of its few strengths. If you were going here to dance, seeing as they have some pretty solid tunes, you’ll find the dance floor is too small and hot. Whereas if you are here to catch up with your hombres its too loud and dark to hold any sort of meaningful conversation. Its a cool place to pop in and experience but i cant imagine it becoming anyone’s number one nightspot anytime soon.

I made the big mistake last Saturday night of coming in here early as everywhere else in Leederville was thronged. We paid our $ 5 in which is a perfectly good covercharge and other clbus would do well to take note. I only realised when I came in that is is basically a small dark hole, done up pretty well but still small and dark. It serves well as a late club but do not come in early it will make you want to go home at 1am because your mind assumes that its bed time. I was looking for a good dance floor to boogie away some of the vodkas but for some reason, dancing here just didn’t feel right and it felt like you were on show.

Tucked away in a alleyway in Leederville, behind walls adorned with street art, Double Lucky caters to a more sophisticated crowd than that of the nearby Garden. This small venue is dark and plush, filled with antique furniture and funky beats. Very popular when it opened around four years ago, now the nights at Double Lucky are more subdued, perfect for catching up with friends over finely crafted cocktails. There are also US house nights on regularly where you might be able to partake in some dancing. Generally this is more of a starting venue rather than a place where you would go to have a big night out.

Double Lucky is a relative newcomer to the scene, located opposite the Leederville Hotel. The outside is rather understated, with the entrance located to one side. Inside, Double Lucky features some nice furniture and chandeliers, with a bar on one side and a DJ in the back corner. The music at Double Lucky leans more towards house music. However, Double Lucky tends to be devoid of people, making it a rather awkward place to socialise. House music generally gives a room a touch of intimacy, but not even house music can liven up the dreary atmosphere. The people who do venture into Double Lucky tend to treat their visit as an accidental stumble while searching for another venue. The general vibe in Double Lucky is rather sterile, from the DJ more interested in scratching beats than creating a party atmosphere, to the bar staff who mechanically pour you drinks. Double Lucky has the potential of being a decent place to visit, although something has to be done to lift its atmosphere. At the moment, there is little to entice people inside.

As far as I know, Double Lucky is the only bar in Perth to hold a strictly females only night. Having heard from a girl at uni about their Thursday night event ‘Girlfriend’, I rocked up at Double Lucky with a friend of mine ready to hit the jack pot. Located down an alleyway(how very Melbourne-esque!) the bar has a cool urban vibe with it’s grungy graffiti outside. The inside décor is very swanky too and I was a big fan of the Victorian themed lounges and chandeliers. I’m pretty pleased that the cover charge was only $ 5, because the place was fairly empty. The crowd wasn’t all that sociable, and on a girls only night there’s usually a really friendly atmosphere, but not at this place. Which is unfortunate, because Double Lucky has SOMUCH potential! Huge dance floor, a drag queen DJ, lots of places to sit down and a pretty full bar. Then again, it was only a Thursday night. Maybe if more people knew about it it’d really go off, but until then I think The Court and Connections will be the main events for Perth’s gay scene.
