Sabu Sushi Bar

My mom and I went in about 7 pm one other couple in the restaurant. My mom and I ordered the rainbow roll California crunch and a 3^rd roll. We also ordered the Japanese Nagasaki champong soup. The rolls were average sushi roll. Nothing spectacular, but not terrible either. The server was good, he knew what was on the menu. When we inquired about the soup he did inform us it was spicy. What we failed to grasp was level of spicy. I like hotter food and this soup was pretty spicy. Even though it was spicy it was awesome!!! I would order it again but I would ask for a little less spice if possible next time. We did have to go find the server to get our drinks refilled. We also had to go looking to get the leftovers packed up and our bill. I would definitely go again.
I found the menu to be a little overwhelming with over 100 choices on the menu. Something I really did like was when our rolls were brought out one was incorrect. They brought us that roll and made us a new roll.

Out with the bestie for Japanese again. She picked this place, because she used to come here when she worked on the south side.
As the three star says, it’s A-​OK. Not fabulous, but not terrible. Service was a little spotty, but polite. It’s one of those things where the place isn’t busy, so the server almost forgets you’re there, right?
I am creature of habit, so I usually order a bento box or sashimi. I didn’t care for the selection of bento boxes much. Only one had sashimi, and I think they all had tempura, which I’m not a fan of. So of course I ordered the one with sashimi rather than try something new.
It was salmon sashimi. No other kinds. The tempura was sweet potatos and one piece of broccoli. I hate sweet potatos. I’ve said it before… maybe if I were more adventurous, I wouldn’t be so bored with the food.
I will say the bento box, for $ 14.95 was quite large, with tempura, salad, salmon sashimi, and sushi that included a few california rolls. The other sushi were the kind that were fish and one shrimp on cakes of plain rice.
I was just underwhelmed with the flavors. No wow. Even the miso soup, despite the green onions and udon noodles in it didn’t seem to taste like much.
Or maybe I just have expensive tastes these days. I’m probably just spoiled.

Absolutely love this place! I love sushi, and this is the freshest I’ve had in the city so far. The service is wonderful, the chefs are wonderful and the restaurant is pretty nice. Favourite new place to go for super quick service, good for pick up and dine in!

Unassuming exterior but good Japanese food inside. Great neighbourhood gem! Had the Bento box with sushi. Fish was well prepared and not over priced. Tempura on the vegetables was light and not oily as is sometimes the case. I’ll be back.

After moving here from Vancouver, I was worried that I’ll have to pay too much for fresh fish, maybe even never getting to taste that cold fatty flavour again. Long story short, I’ve been trying which ever restaurants with a high review here in Edmonton, only to taste disappointment (and bad tasting sashimi). Of course there are exceptions, and Sabu stands out on top of all the restaurants I’ve tried. Big portions for fair prices, fresh salmon sashimi (mmmm) and fast service. There’s only a few people in here at the moment, but impression the chef gave me was impeccable. He was constantly looking over to make sure we get what we wanted. Friendly too. Step up your sushi game Edmonton! Sabu here is the restaurant to beat.

The fresh food and terrific sized portions are what always impresses us. We like the friendly service, easy access and great food. I recommend sharing one of the soup for 2.

good food… good service… but nothing fabulous… tried sabu dinner bento… good portions… sushi was nice… tampuras were a bit oily… will probably go there once a year… worth a try…

The goal was to get sushi, Scott got tempura and a tempura roll, what a tool right?
I didn’t end up getting sushi at all… shoot.
10 bucks for a big, cool Sapporo… aww yeah.

First time here and we’ll definitely be back. Tried a bit of everything from salad to rolls. Good food for a decent price.

Not bad, not great, I’m still happy Sabu is in my area because it’s slim pickings for decent food generally, never mind Asian style food.
I like Sabu because they have a great menu variety, with a mix of Japanese and Korean dishes. The fish is good quality and there is creativity in some of the dishes and their presentation (like sunomono served in a martini glass, very nice) Overall tasty and worth a visit. I especially like the spicy pork bulgogi rolls. The kimchi is good & spicy, and I liked that my spicy sashimi bowl came with the sauce on the side so I could add it to my taste.
Not worth more than an A-​OK rating because other sushi places in town are definitely better. The quality of the sashimi fish and the cuts seem a bit below what I typically see elsewhere. There are things on the menu they no longer serve (like sliced beef tongue) but are still on the menu. Geikkeikan is the only available sake, drink menu otherwise limited.
The place has always been quiet when we visit, with one or two other tables occupied. The setting feels a little surreal because I remember being in the building when it was a Pizza Hut! Not your typical sushi place, that’s for sure, but mostly in a good way.

I have driven by this place several times. And because of the location did not give it much thought. But I liked the décor on the inside and the sushi was really good. Some great stuff and good presentation too.

I ordered take out. It was ready in 10 minutes. Service was very polite and friendly. The sushi was good, but not great. Big roll sizes.

After extensively evaluating the reviews, we finally decided on Sabu. It had the most consistent ratings, and looked promising. And without question we were pleased with our choice.
I would highly recommend the sashimi. Both the salmon and tuna were amazing. However the octopus was cut too big, and was overly chewy.
We also ordered the seared sushi, by recommendation of the waiter, and it was equally delicious.
Thirdly we ordered the bento box. Which was slightly disappointing. The tempura was good, however the miso soup leaved a lot to be desired, the noodles were far to big, and if you’re sharing the soup is not big enough. There was a mixed salad also in the box which i found odd. As well as something that resembled chicken fingers with a spicy sauce on top. The rolls included in the box were very boring, that being said I am an adventurous eater, so California rolls are never my first pick. I asked if i could choose my own rolls but he said no.
If i went back I wouldn’t order the Sabu bento box.
Overall, it wouldn’t make my top 3 sushi places. I found somethings to be over priced, and the menu wasn’t that exciting, all in all it is still worth checking out.

Sashimi was fresh and nicely fatty.
Sushi was also really good.
The tempura was cold and I could see they made it first then added everything else to the box. Maybe make the tempura last.
Décor and ambiance was really nice as well.

I really wanted sashimi or sushi for lunch so I ask my coworkers if anyone wanted something I can go pick it up. It was a blizzard outside so I was doing a huge favor lol.
I took orders and was on my way.
I got in and there was only 1 table occupied (I came in at 11:45am). I ordered a sashimi salad for my self and chicken katsu, beef tatake salad, Toro sashimi, chicken teriyaki Don for my coworkers.
I waited only a 10 mins when my order was ready which was awesome!
I got back and passed out all the meals. Ok this is why I’m giving only 3 stars.
First I was only given 1 set of chop sticks and soy sauce (I think she thought I was eating all this by myself. ???), second my coworker bit into her Toro and said it was frozen. I didn’t believe her so she gave me one and it was slimy and frozen!
My sashimi salad was yummy and everyone like their lunch so overall it was still good but not 100%.
I will come back because I liked my meal and I bet it’s better to dine in.

I came here based on the positive reviews but left sadly dissapointed. We were surprised to see only two other tables of two in the restaurant on Friday evening around 6:30 when we walked in. The chef was wandering around looking at the guests which I found strange, but I guess it was because it was the server’s first week and maybe he was supervising?
We ordered a rainbow roll and the dinner Sabu Bento. The rolls were sloppily made, loose and the sushi rice was slightly overcooked and overseasoned. The bento upgrade included shrimp tempura and chicken karaage. For the upgrade price, I though it would be more than one shrimp and three loonie sized pieces of overbattered chicken with what tasted like Kraft BBQ sauce on it. The udon that came with the bento was good but the broth was salty. The miso soup had plenty of seaweed and tofu in it which I liked. The presentation of the bento box was quite sloppy as a few pieces of the sushi and maki had rubbed up against the chunk of wasabi. Even if I did eat wasabi, I wouldn’t want it smeared all over the side of my sushi or maki.
Overall, for the price, I would totally go anywhere else in the city that I enjoyed previously.

So far, this is one the best sushi places I have had in Edmonton. The service was great. The first time we were here, they even gave us a complimentary sample of a roll. One of the things I like getting here is the Sabu bento. It’s about $ 15 for lunch. The portions were generous. It came with udon, salad, California rolls, a couple pieces of salmon sashimi, nigiri, and tempura. It was definitely worth the price! The fish was actually pretty good and fresh, not dried out. I love eating salmon. The salmon was actually bearable to eat! Yesss! (I had a hard time finding decent salmon sashimi here –sadface-​). For me, the sabu bento was filling. We also ordered a few rolls that were delicious. My boyfriend really likes the California Crunch roll. We also tired the Rose Rose and Red Dragon Roll. Tasty and satisfying!

Just found one of the best looking and tasting sushi place in Edmonton. I’ve been eating sushi in California where is is way more popular than in Edmonton, and i miss the creativity and uniqueness of eating sushi with my eyes first, then with my mouth. The sushi here looks beautiful and delicious. Came here for lunch with my girlfriend, we ordered the Sabu bento box, the california crunch roll, and the rose roll. All of them were great! All the food was beautifully presented and tasteful, fish was very flavorful and rice was nice and soft, some places have hard rice and i just hate that. The service was spot on. Seated immediately, served quickly and with cultural respect of their background. This restaurant is legitimate. Congrats for the owners for doing such a great job.

I came here last week for the very first time, and I will for sure be returning. The atmosphere is really comfortable, service was very friendly and where able to answer most of my questions as it was my first time in the restaurant. The only thing that I did not like is the fact that there is very little Korean selection on the menu.

This family run business offers a delicious selection of Japanese and Korean cuisine. The chef takes special pride in the artisan approach to food serving and the quality of the ingredients.
I enjoyed the chefs specials that offers a more unique meal with ingredients in season and simplifies the order from their extensive menu.
The owner will always drop by your table to ensure everyone is happy.
This is my Japanese/​Korean destination whenever I am in Edmonton and the service and quality has been excellent every time.
