This is the most proficient, professional, caring and effective supplier of all types of fabrics and supplies that you will ever find. They custom made a very unusual zipper for me and they did it so fast it was unbelievable. Mary Jo and Natalie are truly a testament of what truly exceptional service is all about.

Love this place, I come here for a lot of my specialty fabrics! They also have really greats prints for quilting.

Have you ever walked into a place you’ve never been before and heard heavenly choirs of angels singing? Took one look-​around and immediately felt like you were home? I think I may have found the promised land.
I should probably start this review by thanking the lovely ladies who work here for not making a thing out of the girl wandering the aisles, gazing around openmouthed while fondling as many fabrics as she could get her hands on like a total creep. I should probably continue this review by apologizing — I feel like I can normally keep my cool when surrounded by all manner of gorgeous silks and lush imported wools but this was just too much. I’m only human.
Japanese cottons? Here. Unique quilting prints? Here. Faux furs, oilcloth, fine linens, printed charmeuse? Look no further. If you are a sewer then you will definitely find something here that caters to your interests. The staff is more than happy to help you with anything, even if it’s just to brainstorm project ideas. I walked into the store with a few different projects in mind and was able to find fabric for each of them, and at reasonable prices too. And a pro tip: the upstairs is not just a teaching room, all of the fabric is 50% off in that room. I got some beautiful grey tweed Italian wool from the clearance room that I know I’d pay way more for were I to find it here. Which I probably wouldn’t!
Did I mention the ladies who work here are super nice? I was chatting it up with a couple of them while having my fabric cut and when one of them (an older lady, I didn’t catch her name) asked me what I planned on doing with the periwinkle silk border print I was buying, I told her I was going to make a gathered skirt. She looked like she was going to burst into tears of joy and told me that I just HAD to send them pictures once I’d made it up.
They carry a wonderful range of patterns, with a TON by indie designers. It’s so nice to see Decades of Style and Grainline patterns on the shelf, that’s definitely a thing we lack in New Orleans and for sure something I took proper advantage of. There’s also plenty in the way of notions. Whatever it is you’re looking for to finish your project, it’ll probably be here.
A final thanks to the lady behind the counter who was nice enough to give me a canvas tote to carry all of my fabric around in. The plastic bag I’d initially been given didn’t stand a chance at lasting the rest of the day of me lugging it around the Bay Area. That tote saved my life! And the lives of all the lovely fabric that will soon be filling out my wardrobe.

I love the fact we have a local fabric store. It’s a little expensive but so is the lands its on. They do have A wonderful selection. I would love to take a class from them.

This store is amazing. The staff is very knowledgeable and very helpful. They share what they know and help you make informed decisions.
I live over two hours from Berkeley and needed some linking for a silk dress I was making, the chain stores had nothing close to the right color and fabric. I called to see if they would just look and see if they had something in the right range to make it worth the trip. Brenna not only combed the shelves to find everything close to appropriate and emailed me a picture, she also sent me a sample (no charge) of the ones that were a close match. I found what I wanted in the mail a couple days later and called and ordered my fabric. It will be here by the end of the week. The shipping cost less than the gas would have.
I only wish I lived closer.

I have been shopping here for ten years, mostly for lack of other options in our area. Tonight I came at 6:00 to purchase a small closure for a dress. The woman would not let me purchase it and was very rude and condescending. Sucks when you try to support small businesses when there are more convenient big box stores available and they just don’t want your money. Good luck to Stone Mountain but I will be shopping at Piedmont Fabrics from now on.

I used to hate going in this store because I must have caught someone on a bad day once and from then on I felt intimidated to go there. Since then the staff have been nothing but nice. Their selection is amazing. One of their staff used to work for a sewing machine vendor. She helped me contact someone who got me a beautiful machine for 50% off. I was so stoked! Staff are happy to answer questions, refer you elsewhere if they don’t have what you are looking for, etc. And they all seem to be seamstresses themselves. As a person who has been sewing longer than she’s been tying shoes, I can respect that. Way to go Stonemountain. I’m a fan. P. S. The only thing I dislike about Stonemountain is that they only have the highest quality products, so when I need something cheap I still have to go to Jo-​Ann.

I squealed over the lovely selections of patterned fabrics. I’m very impressed with the organization here! There’s a section that was organized by colors, a section organized by various holidays (Halloween and Christmas, for example. I LOVE the Halloween section and will be back to purchase fabrics from this section), and selections organized by fairy tales, school subjects, dogs, cats, fruits, sweets, etc.
The store is well-​lit, and has a very inviting vibe to it.
There’s also a second floor where they apparently have classes.
Sure, it’s pricier than Joann’s, but the selections of patterned fabrics and organization is so wonderful, I can’t wait to come back here for my sewing projects!

The lady who cut my fabric was large, with striped dyed blond hair, very red cheeks and a grey and beige sweater that was falling apart. She looked like she was on drugs, perhaps perscribed, perhaps not. She didn’t smooth the fabric out at all before she cut the material. So there are little waves where the wrinkles were. Then she talked and looked away while she cut which made a nice little gash in the fabric. The job was hapdash, but I just took it as it was as I think she did a similar horrible job of measuring which favored me.
I had to chuckle because I couldn’t believe how awful the customer service was. It could have been a skit for a Saturday Night Live show.
There are too many good reviews for this place online and I thought I should write my experience, because it was mind boggling how horrible it was, and people should know.

This is an incredible store! I am so glad that it is not too near me, because I would be in there constantly. It is close enough to visit if I need to though. To begin, one of the best thing about the store are the staff. Each one has their area of passion and expertise, whether garment construction or quilting. They are helpful to a fault, and no question is too inane. Clothing worn by the staff also tends to be unique and quite creative.
Fabrics available are beautiful, well kept, clean, and well organized. You can find anything from simple cottons, to silks, wools, and anything inbetween. The store offers mainly natural fibers, and stays away from synthetics. That does not mean they do not have polyester fabrics, or vinyl, but they are very careful about what they offer.
The store is very clean, well organized, and very creative. The wall to the left when you enter is full of boxes of buttons of many colors, sizes, and designs. Fabrics abound between to the left of the door when entering, to the far back of the store. The adjacent room to the right is one of my favorite areas, as it has the silks, wools, and other beautiful fabrics.
There is a little area for perusing patterns, which are usually not the big 4, but quite a variety of other pattern companies that are unique in their own way. Patterns are kept behind the counter, but if you wanted to look at them, they would be happy to allow you to look. There are also a lot of notions here, which range from threads to elastics, to assorted tools.
Upstairs is the class area, and surrounding that, are even more fabrics. To get a good idea of what the store looks like, you can view it on their website. It really captures the eclectic and amazing feel of this iconic store.
The classes too, are top notch, and sometimes, you can even find the great and amazing Sandra Betzina sometimes in the store, or possibly teaching a class.
Parking is available on the street and in front of the store, but you have to pay the meter, and be mindful of the time, as you will have to go back out to extend your time if you are shopping a long time.
It is also important to note that it is not a big box store, it supports the community, including a project to help the neo-​natal department of the nearby hospital, and, it is owned and operated by local people. I feel it is very important to support locally owned businesses, and especially an iconic fabric store such as SM & D. It is one of two stores that are my go-​to fabric stores.
They do not have an extensive ribbon selection, however, that is the only thing I find that is not extensive, but they do have some. I think it is sufficient to say that I absolutely love this store!,

This place has a wide variety of fabrics. I don’t buy fabric often, in fact, this was my first time. I used to go along w/​my Mom when she was alive. I’d drive her to buy fabric and then to a person who would sew her dresses. That was over 20 years ago.
So I wanted a traditional cultural outfit sewn for a funeral. I searched Unilocal and picked 4 places according to their review rating and location from me to visit. This store was the BEST of them all. All of the ladies working here are so friendly, but Katherine went above and beyond. She gave me a discount that’s only offered to those on the mailing list. I signed up afterwards, lol.
I put two $$ because fabric has gone up since my visits w/​my Mom?! I remember $ 3-​$ 4/​yard. The fabrics I chose were $ 9/​yard and $ 11 per yard. I understand though… inflation.

Four bolts of African cloth are on a high shelf behind cutting tables in this two story store, these were the only bolts of fabric segregated from all others. There is a sign at the front door to check in backpacks and large bags. I am left to speculate that Kente cloth and the three other African cloths bolts are stolen there. As an African American I felt unwelcome there and I know other races have seen those African bolts up there, some probably agree with that practice, others probably chose not to address this subliminal profiling. I am surprised to see this in 2014 Berkeley. Your message is received, I will not step foot in your establishment again.

Ive been a customer (and a student at their classes) for years and long overdue for a shout-​out to the best fabric store in the area.
Never mind that it’s locally owned, not a chain. It’s a better fabric store because the fabrics are high-​quality and the staff is knowledgeable, incredibly helpful, and friendly. I recently went in to buy fabric for curtains for my teenage daughter’s bedroom and we got spot-​on advice from one of the amazing ladies there.
Setting: mother and daughter looking for the right fabric to complete daughter’s multi-​windowed bedroom. Imagine a few repetitions of:
Me: How about this one? Pretty color!
Daughter: Oh God. No. Are you serious?
Me: Haha, just kidding… how about this one? Cute pattern!
Daughter: Grrrrrrrr…
Enter unsuspecting Stone Mountain Amazing Fabric-​Selling Woman:
Mother (with quiet desperation): Hi, do you think you could give you opinion on these two fabrics? We’re doing the curtains in my daughter’s room.
Stone Mountain Amazing Fabric-​Selling Woman (after careful consideration): Well, it depends on what you’re going for. Both are nice fabrics but this one is more cute, this other one is more sophisticated. (Looks my daughter in the eye). You look more sophisticated than cute to me… and this other one will probably last you longer as your tastes change. That’s just my opinion though.
Daughter: She’s right. Let’s go with this one.
And so we did… Curtains turned out great, and a mother-​daughter scuffle averted.

There aren’t enough words to describe just how fun this store is. From the bittons, to the fake furs, to the glorious wools and silks, there is something for just about anyone who sews or crafts with fabric. I’ve found some really unique trims and accessories for my handcrafted purses, as well as some truly one of a kind buttons and colorfully cool prints. They have a terrific selection of cotton knits (Pajamas! Fun t-​shirts! Casual dresses!) as well as a nice selection of 100% wool in various weights. I was designing new outfits left and right, which is funny considering I’m not the sewer in my family. Tat would be my sister. Still. I’ve been hanging out in fabric stores all my life. I know a good one when I see it, and this one is definitely it. Run, don’t walk, and see what’s on offer. Just be sure to bring some cash.

I’ve been to Stonemountain a lot over the past two years, being an avid sewer and living within walking distance. I don’t really buy much fabric there, since it’s mostly geared towards quilters and is a bit expensive, but I go there for almost all my notions. That said, I often have trouble finding what I need, and it’s wearing a bit thin.
They almost NEVER have the colour or length zippers I’m looking for. Their zipper selection always looks understocked, with some colours or lengths missing altogether. I asked once if they had more out the back or stored away, and was told no. So that’s irritating. I’ve basically given up going there for zippers.
On the rare occasions I have been looking for fabric, I’ve also been out of luck. I wanted fleece to make a Halloween costume, they had two colours. Two! During the summer when they had swimsuit fabrics, I wanted to make a suit and needed swimsuit lining. I did, in fact, already have some from Hart’s Fabrics but was afraid I might need more. They didn’t have any, and weirdly enough, claimed to not know what it is. They said they would try and order some in, and then called me a few days later and said they couldn’t find it anywhere.
Unfortunately for them, there are numerous fabric stores that trade online in California that can deliver me amazing fabrics at reasonable prices, and I’ve made liberal use of those instead of buying from them. The people serving there are often rude (the one friendly, slightly kooky lady I loved seems to have disappeared) and disinterested. They claim to want to know what people have made with their fabrics, but it seems like they only care if you’re over 40 and have made a quilt. I once tried to show them a blouse I made and they couldn’t have given less of a shit. I’ve never seen anything made by a non-​middle-​aged person on their Facebook page.
The owner is quite insufferable — I’ve never met her, but the blog posts she makes are cringingly self-​promotional and the clothes she makes (or gets people to make for her) are out of style.
They do, however, stock indie patterns, which is fantastic, although conversely they don’t stock Simplicity patterns, which is annoying. They don’t stock Megan Nielsen patterns, although I once asked them about it and they said they’d look into it. They don’t appear to have, though, or they put it in the too-​hard basket. Whatever.
In conclusion: Great if you need some thread asap, otherwise there are plenty of other stores with a bigger, better and cheap selection and more helpful assistants.

On my hunt for fabric for our costumes, Unilocal brought me to Stonemountain & Daughter Fabrics.
There is sooo much fabric here! I felt like a kid in a candy store, especially being that up until my visit here, I’ve only been going to the local Joann’s and occasional Hancock Fabrics.
I wasn’t able to journy upstairs because I had my two youngest kids with me, but trust that I will be back just to browse through the sale selection!
Being that it is a «mom and pop» type shop and not a chain store, you won’t find your licensed fabrics/​flannels that you’re used to seeing at Joann’s or even Walmart. There are still tons of great prints to choose from!
The staff is amazing and more than willing to help you with any questions you may have! Being that I’m a beginner, this was a huge plus for me because they didn’t make me feel at all like I was bothering them or that my questions were «beneath» them. Each employee that helped me were cheerful and also personable, made me feel less intimidated being there among others who are definitely more advanced than I am.
Definitely, definitely, coming back here.

I love venturing out here to beeline my way upstairs to where all of the fabrics are half off. When I went here for the first time, I used to wander aimlessly through the shelves of fabrics. That’s a great way to kill time if you’re waiting for a friend or a table nearby. But if you’re a student like me, or just on a budget, the upstairs yields all of their fabrics that are half off. The worst thing that you can do is fall in love with a fabric downstairs and have to pay full price for it. There are plenty of beautiful fabrics upstairs to fall for!
My favorite finds here would have to be the wools and silks. My closest source for fabrics is Joann and although I can find most of what I would need there, they seem to be more on the synthetic end these days, or blends.
Also, make sure to sign up for their email list. They usually send out a 15% off coupon so if you do find a full priced fabric that you can’t live without, you’ll at least save some money. If not, I think that they still offer student discounts with valid ID. Don’t quote me on that though– but make sure to ask at least!

I’ve been to Stonemountain and Daughter a few times now ever since I took an «intro to your sewing machine» class here (which was fabulous and oh so very useful, by the way!). There are so many fabrics, embellishments, and sewing essentials to choose from. I’m a sucker for soft/​smooth textures and fun patterns, so, pretty much, this place to me is like a toy store to a kid. My favorite part of the store is the «remnants» fabric section where you can buy a variety of fabrics in varying sizes. I like to purchase knits here for making infinity scarves. Score!
I have to say, though, that I get a weird vibe from the workers (I can’t tell if they are pleased to see customers or not) and I haven’t found them to be very useful yet (I asked for advice on how much fabric I might need for a project and the lady couldn’t offer any suggestions). This place is definitely pricier than a chain fabric store, but they have a variety of quality products; I’m sure you’ll be happy with whatever purchase you make here.
