The Eatery

It is really hard for me to find anything positive to say. I have never left one star on a review and I wanted to be honest so I believe two is appropriate. I have been here three times. One time we ate in and when my quiche was served I noticed that the filling was less than an inch high and very dry. I mentioned to the waitress that there was nearly no filling and very dry and she looked at me, looked away, and walked away. I tipped anyway. I know, I know. Another time I stood at the dessert counter and waited several minutes until a worker came over, went behind the counter, fiddled around for a couple of minutes, and then walked away never looking at me. I left immediately thereafter. The third time I was there I ordered soup to take out and later noticed that it was filled nearly two inches away from the top and it was a small container. Those things combined with the fact that the workers are cold and unfriendly has purposed me to never return. It is REALLY weird. I don’t know whether the restaurant is struggling or whether they’re family and don’t like one another and are pretty miserable. Whatever. I live in NYC and can’t remember ever having the same experiences in my 27 years here. Since I don’t enjoy wannabe snobs deigning to serve me subpar food misrepresented as gourmet, I have since stopped dropping in when visiting family. The third time wasn’t a charm. It was a third strike. And, sadly, I truly wanted to enjoy the food. For goodness sake, I gave it three chances. (I could have even put up with the weird Adams Family vibe if the food had been good.)

When I don’t wanna cook I come here.
The inside is roomy and large enough for a sit down eat in experience. The tables are clean and the floor is not sticky.
The counter staff is helpful and pleasant, really nice people.
They have a variety of soul foods here, I’m partial to the fish, fried whiting to be exact. I like the way it’s fried and seasoned. I like the sides that come along with this well portioned meal.
The Mac and Cheese is delish, the sweet potatoes are on point and the collard greens not to salty not to sweet.
You get more then enough fish, the corn bread is soft and sweet which makes for good eats. You will get the Ittis after you’ve completed your meal which mean there was the right amount of carbs with your meal, which also means it’s a quiet house.
I haven’t tried any other foods here but I have seen the plates that go out, and they look like something I would have a go at.

We’re always on the lookout for good breakfast and we definitely found it here in this cute little place in East Hartford!
Great — really great — coffee — but I’d like to see some really creamer rather than powdered creamer. The grits are AMAZING, best I’ve had outside of Virginia! Served hot and creamy with butter, they went nicely with well-​cooked freshly scrambled eggs and lean, very flavorful turkey bacon. The over-​easy eggs with slab bacon was also delicious, We plan to go back not only for breakfast but also to try their fried chicken and mac and cheese and collard greens!
In addition to a great breakfast, the folks running the place are warm and friendly. Make sure you meet Cecil!

I really enjoyed my time here. The food is very fresh and flavorful. There are plenty of soul and comfort food options that taste great and aren’t heavy.
Try the grilled tilapia or the porgies! A few staples of the menu include chicken, fish and pork. Normally, the restaurant rotates the other types of meat available (I usually call ahead). There are an abundance of sides to choose from. I enjoy the cabbage, yams, and mac.
This is a smaller establishment, but I haven’t had an issue getting a table in the past. Take-​out is always an option as well. Prices are VERY reasonable for the plate portions and variety. The owner is very helpful, and provides catering services if you are hosting an event.

If u’re looking for good soul food, this is an EXCELLENT spot! The customer service is good (the staff is very well-​mannered) & they have some nice choices on their menu
