History
Established in 2013.
Merchants Pub & Plate is built on the foundation of the building’s original tenants: Merchants National Bank. The history of the space and ingredients sourced from local merchants inspired the owners to choose a name that tied back to Midwestern roots.
Built in 1888, the limestone building sits at the corner of 8th and Massachusetts streets in beautiful downtown Lawrence, KS. It was originally constructed as three stories, featuring a bell tower, by Merchants National bank.
In 1930, First National Bank remodeled the building and was its occupant until 1970, when the building was used by local organizations and finally turned into a restaurant in the 1990s.
