SIR Construction

I do not recommend this company to anyone. I chose them to rebuild my house after a fire destroyed the whole inside of the house and left the concrete walls standing. The initial estimate was very professional so I ended up choosing them to rebuild. That was the only thing professional about the whole experience. They have No customer service or care, No communication, are VERY expensive, and take forever to finish a project. Any changes you would like beyond what the insurance will replace will cost you DOUBLE what a good licensed contractor would cost. I obtained several quotes on different things throughout my house and they were easily double the cost but you are locked into a contract and have to use their subcontractors. They took over a year to rebuild the inside of my 700 sq ft house when they initially said it would only take 8 months. Then they blamed the slowness on me and I had to prove to my insurance that it was not me which was not a problem for me to prove but very lame that I had to do it.
An insurance claim is a bad experience as it is, don’t make it worse and chose this company to help rebuild.

I have used SIR Construction for projects big and small for almost 15 years. I have had them replace a roof, build a deck, paint both the inside and outside of my home, deal with water damage on an emergency basis, and minor remodeling of a kitchen (and more projects). I have to say that I have been very happy with the work. As a company, they have always lived up to their promises. They communicate with you and address questions and concerns. I trust them. How many people can say that about their contractor? I can.

Overall we had a horrible experience with SIR construction which was mainly caused by poor project management and communication. Our project manager is a co-​owner of the company.
1. Overall plan — The original damage repair plan was to replace damaged wood flooring in our kitchen. Due to our family circumstances we re-​scoped the project to replace the wood flooring with tile in the kitchen, repair the kitchen toe kicks, and repair our window-​sill. All estimates were approved by SIR and they were in scope of our original budget.
2. Tile floor installment — Overall the tile floor installment was a below average experience. The original SIR estimator for the tile floor recommended a overlapping pattern for aesthetics, which we agreed to. However, once the installment team was on-​site, we were told we could not go with the planned pattern and had to adjust our pattern one less aesthetically pleasing. The on-​site team recommended this because we had a sloping floor, which was identified within the first 5 minutes of their arrival. The on-​site team was surprised that the SIR team and estimator did recognized this fact during inspection. The tool utilized by the team to identify the slope was a 10+ foot ruler, it was not a fact that could only be uncovered during removal of the old flooring. In addition, the tile floor installment team did not have the correct installation date that was agreed to with SIR construction. I took the day off work to be on-​site for the morning installment, due to the error and lack of oversight with SIR, they did not arrive until late afternoon.
3. Toe-​kick repair — Toe-​kick repair was poor. SIR purchased off the shell toe-​kick and left visible nails during installation. All of previously installed toe-​kicks have no visible nails, and were attached properly. When asked that the toe-kick’s be fixed, were were told this was out of scope of the project, and could only be done by repainting the entire toe-​kick. After speaking with other contractors, we determined this information to be false.
4. Window-​sill repair — Due to water damage on our kitchen window-​sill, SIR recommended that we replace our MDF window-​sill with a stone window-​sill. We have quartz (man made) countertops and wanted to ensure that we would be able to appropriately match the countertops. SIR delivered a quartz sample that we both agreed upon for installation, but during installation we were giving a very different quartz window-​sill, which did not match our countertops at all. SIR’s explanation was that quartz can be different from slab to slab, after speaking with 3 quartz manufacturers we found this was not true. Since quartz is man-​made there would be very little deviation in color. Due to the color mismatch and due to several scratches on the slab, we had them make a second window-​sill for our house at the cost of the manufacturer (due to the scratches). I offered to go to the quartz manufacturer on-​site to verify the new piece of quartz before they cut it. SIR did not take me up on the offer, and when they delivered the second window-​sill it was the exact same color as the first. We did not allow this window sill to be installed, and I personally went to several quartz manufacturers to choose a slab to be used for our window-​sill. After doing so, and then giving instructing SIR to purchase the new ½ slab (same price point as the one chosen by SIR), SIR said they would not finish the job with the agreed materials and offered us a credit based upon their estimation to get the work done. Their estimation is only ½ the cost to get the remaining work done. We are now in process of working with our bank to get this resolved.
Grading
Price F — When asked to see any material receipts and hours accounted for by their contractors, I was told they do not share this with customers. There is no chance for me to audit a final itemized bill to determine if I was charged correctly.
Quality D — The tile floor was done well, but I had to touch up the remainder of their work (toe-​kicks). We currently have no window-​sill
Responsiveness F — Jayme H. (project manager) is not easily reachable, and was not on-​site for the majority of the work done to our house. Average response time for any communication was one day or greater.
Punctuality D — Tile floor team was scheduled to show up on the wrong day, I took a day off work to be there, however because of scheduling error, they were not there to late afternoon to start job, which was supposed to be started in morning. For other appointments, we asked repeatedly to be called day prior of any appointment to confirm time, this was not done.
Professionalism F — Customer service /​attitude of project manager was often confrontational. SIR refused to complete the job, but insist on being paid, based upon their estimations, with no opportunity to audit the final bill.
Overall — I would not recommend SIR to anyone under any circumstances.

Terrible. I echo what the prior reviewer said. Totally miscommunicated with us about the scope of the job and then blamed us. Contractor they used scratched our counters by putting his saw on them while doing the floors. Made a huge mess in our basement that they didn’t clean up. The people they use are flaky and unreliable.
We used them because our insurance company recommended them — stay away!

We had the misfortune of water damage on our wood kitchen floor — not once, not twice — but THREE times.
The first damage occurred in July of 2010. The insurance company recommended SIR and stated if we used their services the work would be guaranteed for three years. First repair the project manager, Jayme, did an excellent job. We had to have the finish on the floor redone, twice. But, no problem — it was done. Plumbing had to be replaced under the sink to bring it up to code.
The second occurrence was in December 2011. SIR insisted this was a totally different reason for the damage and would not accept responsibility for not making the necessary repair so it wouldn’t happen again. The project manager, Csaba, was not as diligent as Jayme. It was a much bigger repair because the cabinets needed to be removed, floor replaced — there were times we had to move out of the house because of the repairs being done. No cause could be found by any of the sub-​contractors for the damage — water was just there. We had to have the pipes replaced under our sink (again), because of the new sink and disposer. Every time a contractor came in — the comment «this isn’t up to code» for the plumbing under the sink. The PM wanted to replace all of the cabinets and drawers, not sure why — there was no damage to them. Finally he kept the cabinets, but insisted the drawers had to be replaced. We were supposed to pick out the granite at the yard, but that didn’t happen. Our insurance company cancelled us.
Which now brings us to 2013 and a new appearance of water on the floor. The president of the company, Scott, came out, found a water logged dishwasher door — said there is your problem. He brought in fans to help dry out the floor. Okay, shouldn’t that have been discovered by the multitudes of professionals that were in our home on the previous job. Wouldn’t that have kept the latest incident from occurring? We now have a ripply floor that we don’t have the energy or resources or insurance to repair. SIR denies any wrong doing. We have a bill for the use of the fans to dry out the floor. It just seems that to have three totally different reasons for a damaged floor is a lot. If it had been corrected the first time — no second time. If it had been fixed the second time, — no third time. Too much…

Lied to us about coming back and finishing the job. Billed us for work they never did. Made claims that there must have been a miscommunication.
Avoid this company if possible.

Watch out! These people are dishonest and if you happen to work with them, you have to watch every move they make. We had to work with them for an insurance claim, for which we needed our slab granite kitchen counters replaced. When they installed our granite, they gave us a piece that was smaller than what we had agreed upon and was not one slab! It had a seam… but they didn’t bother to tell us about this until we noticed it ourselves after it was installed. They were totally trying to pull a fast one on us! In addition, when we checked the dimensions of the counter and they were off by 2 inches on the long edge, which come to a substantial area of error.
We confronted them on this and insisted they fix this and install the proper size slab in ONE piece and they told us that would be impossible to do without a seam. BS! We had handpicked our high-​end granite at a reputable granite company and the slabs were ENORMOUS. They just were saying that to try to get out of redoing the work they screwed up.
Finally, after many emails and phone calls with people making too many excuses, they have decided to replace the granite with ONE SLAB to the proper dimensions. It has yet to be done, though, so we’ll still have to see what happens.
In the meantime, we regret having gone with SIR. At the time of our insurance claim, our insurance company highly recommended them. We got duped into using a 2^nd rate company and should have known better.
