Crumbs Bake Shop

Pros: they list the calorie intake for all of the items in the front display counter. This led me to the interesting realization that not every cupcake is created equally. The «Happy Birthday» had more than twice the calories of other options! I figured that there would be some difference, but at over 800 calories for the HBD, I’d probably pick a chocolate or a pumpkin.
Almost settled on a flavor, I noticed a sign for the Crumbnuts. Part doughnut and part croissant, they had two flavors to choose from on the night that I was there: cinnamon and Bavarian crème. Since I’m very much a Boston crème doughnut kind of girl, I picked the latter.
Cons: the Crumbnuts. Skip the hype. It was just a square croissant, cut in half with Bavarian crème in the middle. It was only $ 3, but so were the cupcakes. Le sigh…

ERGH… the crumbnut was Just bland and boring. That is what you get when you are too lazy to go stand in line for an actually Cronut. I usually stay away from Crumbs but darn it all I cannot get over my curiosity when I see interesting marketing.
The staff at this location however were really nice. It is a smaller store off the beaten path so I think they have not been hardened like the employees in more touristy areas.

Crumbnuts? Really?
These latest poor man’s Cronuts are just as lazy as their ill-​conceived name.
I think Crumbs is now the first chain in the US to try their hand at ripping off the Cronut, and it is a major failure.
They don’t even look appealing at all. It’s a small, beige ring that looks unfinished and almost like it’s under-​baked. They have two inexplicable varieties — one with powdered sugar on top and no filling, and one that is bare with a Bavarian cream filling. It’s almost like they couldn’t afford both a topping and filling for each one.
I of course went with the filled one — the filling itself was decent, but the rest was pretty nasty. It was dense, but not at all in the good way — it tasted like biting into a stale hunk of butter. There was none of the light, flakiness you expect from a croissant, nor the crispness of a fresh fried doughnut.
This was extremely disappointing. I usually defend Crumbs to people that hate on chains and others that criticize the cupcakes for being too sweet. I love the overly sweet shakes-​inducing frosting on the cupcakes here, but it looks like the quality is degrading now that they have a location in every single neighborhood. I may still come here every now and then for a sloppy sugar fix, but I don’t think I trust anything new coming from them anymore.

The server told me not to get the cake pops because they were sitting there since he started — which was about a month.
Also, I do not like the set up. If I would have saw the smaller cupcakes, I would have gotten them. I will not be back to this location.

Cupcakes are not good. Looks clean though and staff is very friendly.
Come on Crumbs, make some quality products…

Big open space that is very sparingly decorated, save for the larger than life «We proudly serve Starbucks» sign mounted on the wall behind the case of cupcakes.
As for the cupcakes: they are rich, moist, and freaking ginormous! They’re definitely shareable and therefore totally worth the $ 3.95 since you’re feeding two bellies.
The worker I had was quite knowledgable about each ingredient used in all of the cupcakes I inquired about.

I think crumbs cupcakes are tasty but I’m really not sure what the hype is about. 12 small cupcakes for $ 19.95 was a nice gift for my office mates, but I would never go back on my own time.

It has been a while since I went back to Crumbs. Maybe 2 or 3 years. Trends really come and go in New York City, and we can’t ignore the fact that cupcakes have been super popular recently. The only issue is, New Yorkers get tired of things easily, at least it’s my feeling on eatable things. We love one thing for a season, then we think it’s boring and we move on to another culinary trend… its pretty much how I feel about cupcakes, so my review on this might be a tiny little bit biased.
But, for some reason, a friend of mine who was craving for cupcakes inspired me to go back to Crumbs and get some cupcakes.
Well, this will be the last time I go back I think. I do admit having a sweet tooth, but things are changing I guess, and I really had an overdose of sugar, to the point where I am really not craving for sugary things anymore…(For that, I had to thank Crumbs actually)
These cupcakes are super super sweet and rich (Had the Red Velvet and a chocolate one), so rich they made me nauseous… The store was clean and people were lovely, but the second thing that turned me off, was the partnership with Starbucks. I don’t know if you are this kind of person, but I prefer non-​franchised places. The atmosphere in the store is a little too clinical for me, and it felt like they were really trying too hard, with the «make your own cupcake» and all. Too much marketing kills it at times, it’s the feeling I had.
I don’t like to be to harsh, but it’s my honest opinion. I won’t go back for a while, unless it’s to buy cupcakes for a friend of mine who loves theirs in particular.

I really can’t think of any reason to not like this place.
I’ve been here twice. The first time, my best friend convinced me to go. The staff was very friendly and helped me choose a really awesome cupcake. I believe that the first time I had a caramel and vanilla thingamajig. The second time (yesterday) I had what was called a «Good Guy.» The name was fitting as it was delicious. It was a vanilla cupcake with sprinkles baked inside the cupcake. It also had filling inside.
I only found out about Crumbs this year when my college professor mentioned it in passing. This is going to be my new favorite place when I need a pick me up after an awful day.

I’m on the fence about giving Crumbs 3 – 4 stars… But let me tell you why I went with 4 first. The crumbs lady, knows her shit. I was in there tonight trying to decide what cupcake to get (I was taking a ridiculous amount of time, I just couldn’t decide) And no matter what cupcake I mentioned, she knew what was in it, on top of it, filled with, sprinkled with, rolling around with, taking on dates, etc.
That being said, I went at 7pm (which I guess isn’t prime cupcake time anyway) and I could pretty much tell the cupcake had been sitting there for quite awhile. It was still good, don’t get me wrong, but the icing was a little hardened.
And something I maybe shouldn’t complain about is just how BIG the cupcakes are. I mean, sure that’s awesome seeing as you’re paying $ 4 for a cupcake, but who can finish one of those?!
I think the novelty of it is how decadent all the cupcakes are, not how good they actually are, unfortunately.

Crumbs and your .99 cent coffee deal… how can I broke college student resist?
Definitely not the best coffee or anything, but it’s cheap and they’ve got soymilk!
