The Shaggy Dog

Now, it’s been 23 years! I just took my new puppy to Cookie for her first haircut, and it is perfect, as expected. I live downtown, but it’s worth the trip for the quality of the grooming and Cookie’s professionalism. She’s been grooming for 40 years!!!

Cookie at the Shaggy Dog is amazing! I brought my miniature Australian Shepard there for a hair cut last weekend and he looks amazing! Cookie knows her stuff and thinned out his fur without shaving or shearing his hair. It’s clean and quiet and Cookie does the grooming herself and it’s really nice to be able to speak with the actual groomer and not have your dog carried to a back room to someone else grooming him. I highly recommend the shaggy dog and will be going there for my puppy’s grooming going forward!

We take our two yorkies here for cuts every few months — Cookie does a great job with them! She gives them puppy cuts, which we love because they last so long between cuts.
She does a great job detailing their ears, around their nose and eyes. They get compliments on their cuts all over the city!
Pricing is on par with other groomers in the city. It’s clear that they care about the appearance and comfort of the animals and truly want to make them look their best!
Will continue to use them as long as we live here!

Took my Pomeranian there. The owner did a very nice job. My dog looked super cute when he came out.
This is the first time I used a groomer in NYC. The price is much higher than CT and Miami area. Could just be the market price in Manhattan.
It was about 4 ½ hours from the time my dog was dropped off till he was picked up. This is much longer than 1 ½ hours which was how long it normally takes in Miami and CT.

My review is a bit belated, but well deserved! We took our Yorkiepoo puppy Ellie here for her first grooming– and it couldn’t have been better. Cookie asked me what preferences I had for Ellie’s haircut (length, ears, tail) to make sure we were satisfied with her «adult» look (no more fluffy puppy shag). She also did a great job with Ellie’s nails, and gently brushed and trimmed out as much of the matting she could without hurting her. Aesthetically and functionally– her look came out great.
Also, I goofed and mixed up my day to bring Ellie in (it was supposed to be a Tuesday and I showed up first thing Wednesday morning– and she was still nice enough to accommodate me. I wouldn’t recommend repeating that– stick to your appointment because they are busy– but the effort to accommodate me despite my error wasn’t lost on me.
I included a picture of Ellie with her «haircut» and bow as reference. Great job!

Wow!!! Cookie (and her son) worked their magic again. My hyper-​tense, uppity and anxious dog (Lee Roy) was handled with care.
Took my dog this past Saturday for a «shave and a bathe». Lee Roy is a difficult customer even when getting bathed. I have never had him shaved before. (He has the coat of a husky.)
Cookie is a miracle worker. My dog looks wonderful with his «summer cut». He is much more comfortable in the hot/​humid weather.
When I went to pick him up I was told he was out for a walk. Who else would do that? No one but Cookie!
Thanks Cookie we will be back!

Just moved from CT where my groomer was an angel! To say I’m overprotective and neurotic about my two rescue shih tzus is an understatement. I refuse to find another vet since I loved her so much so I go back to Westport for appointments. I realized I had to find a groomer closer so I starting asking people walking dogs on the street and reading Unilocal.Everything seemed to point me to Shaggy Dog and Cookie. She was nice and accepting of my neuroticism and made me feel comfortable. The girls came out clean and pretty and daddy made it through in one piece also.
I would recommend Cookie.

I have been going to Cookie for 14 years for my Yorkie. My dog Roxy is one of her more senior clients and the care that they take with an older dog is very important. Taking a bath and getting groomed is not Roxy’s favorite thing, but they manage to get her through the process and she looks adorable when I come to pick her up.
I can’t say enough nice things. I moved to Chelsea and I still will always bring Roxy back to the Upper Eastside to Shaggy Dog. She knows them and I know she gets the loving care she needs.

I came in a couple days ago to look at some collars and leashes for my neighbor’s dog, and ended up actually calling my neighbor to come in which lead to an appointment the very next day.
I must say, as someone that just moved into the area, how wonderful and how hospitable this place really was. The two managers were really kind, down to earth women that know dogs and really pay attention to their appearance and what is best for them throughout the seasons (it’s winter so it’s important that dogs are groomed but do not get colds!)
I don’t understand how anyone could have a bad experience at this place, but I can definitely tell why this business — despite the circumstances in this area — has been open for such a long time.
Such a great grooming place!

We love Shaggy Dog! I share our feelings with many pet people when I say– our 4 legged companion is our child. The excellence in service and execution at Shaggy Dog has been beyond 5 star. The best experience and results– our 1 year old golden has always turned out soft, silky and has been managed with love. He is a handful and I know that Cookie and her team were expert in achieving magnificent results. Excellent service– amazing people– great for the love of our life canine– «Roger». I recommend everyone we know.

I have been taking my «babies» to The Shaggy Dog for 9 years and absolutely love the place and more importantly the owner and staff. I have 2 Shih Tzus, who are not the most co-​operative with the grooming process, but will still walk in the front door willingly, which tells me they are well looked after while inside. Cookie and her employees have always done a great job with them and have been very gracious when i ask how they behaved. My dogs always come out beautifully groomed (they always ask how you want them to look), happy and rocking their bandanas!!! I have recommended The Shaggy Dog to many people who have since gone there and they loved it too. I can’t say enough good things about this place!!!

My dog Zoe is almost 15 years old she has been going to the Shaggy Dog since she was 9 months old. Since my dog is a Poodle she can communicate with me very well. Every time she leaves the Shaggy Dog she tells me that she has had the greatest day hanging out with the owner Cookie and the other people who work there. Again since she is a poodle she doesn’t mention the other dogs. When we walk toward the Shaggy Dog in the morning she directs herself straight into the shop. What a better recommendation can you get then those from the mouths of babes and small dogs. I would never think of bringing my dog to any other groomer. I whole hardheartedly recommend the Shaggy Dog.

I love this place! When I first got my dog, as a puppy, I walked her around the neighborhood, checking in with different groomers. All the other groomers looked at her and said «Is that a cross between a schnauzer and a poodle?» Shaggy Dog looked at her and said «A Kerry Blue! We don’t see many of those!» Beckett has been going there ever since. Cookie always does a great job on her.

I love this place! I made the mistake of going to a groomer a couple of blocks away and it was bad. The guy cut my dog’s paw and my dog’s hair cut was not that great, so I started searching for another groomer in the neighborhood and discovered «The Shaggy Dog,» when I called the owner was extremely sweet and the price was reasonable for the area. When I got my dog Dotty back I absolutely loved her haircut which looked perfect and the little bow was a sweet touch. I will definitely be coming back.

My dog Sano who is a 16 pound Bichon/​Shih Tzu had gone to the same groomers for almost five years in Orlando before we relocated to New York so naturally I was a bit nervous to try someone new. His previous groomer in Orlando was a very sweet lady that ran her own business called The Dapper Dog House.
LIke I do for almost everything, I started my search on the internet. I narrowed my search down to a few choices and called each place to ask two questions. The first was the cost and the second was if Sano could be dropped off in the morning and picked up before they close. The second response was very important to me as Sano suffers from seperation anxiety so I take any chance I get to have someone else watch him for the day.
When I called The Shaggy Dog the owner Cookie was the one that answered. She quoted me $ 85 (the other quotes I received were within $ 10) for the grooming and also stated that Sano could stay the whole day. I went ahead and booked an appointment for that coming up Saturday.
Since that first appointment Sano has gone back a couple more times. In a city where even the smallest tasks can prove challenging, I’m just glad finding a new dog groomers wasn’t one of them.

I won’t take my dog anywhere else. Personalized service and they always do a great job and listen to what you want — no surprises.
